Now, if we are to under standby this that it adds something to that it did not poeseps before, it is a mistake. A given weight of tho liquid and solid excrements is worth more as manure than tho samo weight of the food at equal degress of dryness, consumed by the animals from which they are derived. But it must be remembered that one hundred pounds of dry food eaten by animal furnishes only forty pounds of dry matter in the liquid and solid excrements. In other words, there is a loss in feediDg of J JO per cent. • this loss con sists principally of carbon—an element of little value as manure. This forty pounds of dry matter is worth as much for manure, or nearly ro, (there being a little loss of nitrogen, phos phates, ko ,) os the 10U pounds of dry food ; and of course, 1001 b?. of such manure would be worth much more than 100 pounds of ihe food from which it was derive*? it is this..fact that has led to the Impression that feeding food to animals increases its valu* as manure. The li- quid and solid excrements of amcfals living on clover, for instance, would bo a more appropri ate food of wheat and other cereals than tbe clover iiself; and’if carefully preserved would furnish very nearly as great auamoant of those elements most required by the-wheat licauaolbo too ofiend'rpeated that tho value of the manure depends, primarily oo tho compo sition of tbe food eaten by the animals. “You cannot make a whistle out of a pig a tail, neither can you make good manure out of an old draw stack, t You may rot it dorro, «r f-*vd it to animals; bill it is straw still “But can not you roak,: it v ilnab’.c by mixiflg other rn • j nureo with it "" Certainly. If you u.?‘i; tot übM>rb>!ig the liquid of animals living on belter food, you make tho heap of manare mere valua ble and the praoiicc is a good one, and much to bo commended. But t-Le atraW is straw still. Lfyou have a'purae cf pennies, and you mix them with a quantity of gold dollars, you make the purse raoru valuable, out the gold dollars do o*t add to thuiutnusic value of the penr.it?. It may be more conYcuiooi lo carTy them mixed together : Hut, if the gold dollars wore ii> ‘>l.l pocket and the pennies tn another, youweuli have just a* much mooey as though jtu had them all m one pocket, flu it mtfy be more convenient to mix tbe good manure with the ! poor. Tne Utter may ai>;,arb and. retain those r substances which would , thorwise drain away 1 or fly ctl . but tho mtxirf « contains no more i G/r< lliting cloinonis, and l yurd be no more va.- liable an manure, than if it.Wfrotui » Q d the poor manure■? ml Uen preserved and ap plied separately. Ud*sfi A* subotanceu from which the niaDurca are contain the ne cessary elements, it is vairAto expect to make ft valuable manure from tbenrby auv Ipnwn pro cess of feeding or fetnieotiOioti The manure from poultry i? mor*' valuable than that from hogs, while tbe Utter in generally Diore valuable tfcau that trom home or front caul- and sheep, Mid many persons teem io thick tom different nuimoU have different pow ers which, iQ some mysterious* way, affect the quality of the mauure. This is net the case—at lcaat to any appreciable extent. The dropping* of poultry arc the tuos< valuable from the fact that fowls livcontioher food, and Ihe liquids and eotidf are voided together. So Of hogs and other animals. If tbo food were the same, there would be little if any difference in the value of the manure. One hundred pounds of hay eatcu by a horse, au ox, or a eheep, would furnish manure, differing perhaps in quality, but ot the same absolute value. To have good manure, then, we must feed the animals on lood-contain iug a sufficient amount of fertilizing Ingredients. We are anxious rfl the risk of being tedious, to impress ibis fact on the winds uf our readers. In feeding animals, we .should not only oou cider what will produce the most meat, but also wbat will furnish the richest mauure. For in stance, Indian oorn may fatten an animal as rapidly an oil cake, but the roanuro from oil cake fed animals is much more valuable than from tboao fed on corn. Ordinary meadow hay way fatten sheep as vclt;pi olover hay (though we somewhat doubt itjj'dmt the manure from tho former is muofa inferior, to that from the latter. Oil oakc, peas, bead,a, and rod clover are among the best foods tbaP.can be not-ouly for their nutritious quinsies, but os also furnish ing richer manure."*'.' Another point should not be overlooked. It should he our aim those plants as food for stock whi,cb HmtpbWriah tho.soil hut little, and elovefc pcaq, heaps, and turnips are, on this accountjam£ug tjhe best. Having got ibeuiantfre, our next object must be to prevent valuable elements from being washed awav, or ftpm'bping dissipated by too rapid fermentation A On? most farms, wore los* is sustained from the former than from tho latter. On this account, the water from the building should never be allowed to rnn into tho manure yard. All that fills ou the heap iteelf c*»u !>* absorbed by the judicious use of straw and waste matters. Bui us moro water falls at some seasons of tho year than is roquire-J by the m'a- Bure, and not enough-at other limes, it would be a great advantage Ui have a tank into which the drainage could bo run when the water is in ex cess, and from which it oould be pumped back when it is de&oienL Few peoplo have any idea of the value and convenience of a good manured tonk. Water has thq power of retaining a large, quantity of ammonia, and thejudicious use of tne drainage io the tank will prevent much loss of this most valuable ingredleut of uatur-e. - Bomo good farmers in this vicinity are aban doning the practice of plowiqg iu clover for wheal. They break up the sod ground for cure; iben sow barley, followed by wheat the same fall. And they hod, of course, much beiu-ht from tu-iOtmogW wheat, either by plowing in tho manure before sowing or applyiug it ai n top dressing. iSich a pracuoa allows the ma nure to remain ft the barnyard during the eum mer, and, by proper management, it can bo re duced to “epiL manure" with liitlo or no losVof ammonia. Such manure, so fermenied that it can be cut wnh a spado, will not weigh more than half as much as it it bad been uued in the fresh, unfermeoted state, and, of course, tho cost of bauliog, spreading, &c , would be re duced cue-half- Such mauure, too, acts quick ,cr 00 d would afford the wheat plants abundance 1 »r’nourishment in the Ml, and give them a good start, which is » very import*!*!- considers- I tion. . . ‘ , Manure applied to spring orops should U thoroughly decomposed, or it bos little immedi ate effect; and If tho weather proves dry nnd | hot unfermented raaouro is ad often injurious ! ag useful. We are well aware that there is among practical faroors, as well as amoug scl en'ifto writer*, much diversity of npiuioo on this point. If pc plow In fresh manure, tho food of plants it contains is retained In the same and wiU ultimately exert its maximum effect. On the other hand, aj manure is usually treated, thorc is great low frorp rapid and in jurious fermentation nod moro especially from Caching. Bat this Inching can be avoided. manure caa be useful to a good crop, it must bo thoroughly decomposed—either on the heap or in the soil. Plants cannot live on dis organized, or partially organized matter. It ta their function to convert the crude, ioorgonio matter of earth and air into organized matter, capable of euppprtfrg animal life. Plants can ; no moro live on organized mailer, than animals 1 can live tn the crndo alkalief, acids, and gases , of which plants are composed. I' Manure, to act Immediately therefore, rcn*t i be well rootedr-nod in this cose* os in aU othere ls money." The relative advantages of applying manors to wheat in the fall, or to. spring crops, involve points which we cannot ‘ now consider. Duiing the summer, fonnenta lions proceeds rapidly, and it is easy to get ma nure well rotted for fall use; but it Is difficult to . get manure made in winter sufficiently decom- < posed for immediate application to spring crops. • The four principal agents in fermentation, arc j light, heat, a.r, and moisture. Other things being equal, thu-c substabces which contain the j moat nitrogen fermontjthe easiest. On this ac- : count, good manure will rot sooner than poor. Compression, by excladiog the oir, retards fer -1 mentation; an excess of water, from the same , cause the eame effect. If the heap was j perfeoUy/dry, no fermentation would take place. 1 This, however, never happens in praolice; but ■ the heapjis often too dry, and then tho manure ! **fire fangs,'’ with great loss of ammonia.. The reason hpat is evolved during fermentation, is owing tq tho oxygen of the an uniting with the carbon a&d hydrogen of the manure, forming carboniciacid aod water—a given quantity of carbon and hydrogen giving put as much heat as though burned in ft stove. This nascent car bonia.ftcid has a beneficial effect on many of the ingredients of the manure, rendering them solnblo. The principal object in preserving manures should be to let the heap ferment slowly—not so rapidly os to driTe off tho ammonia. To ocoom plislt’diis, the hog rttod cow manuro, which fer ment with difficulty, should be.mixed with the horse and sheep manure, whiob havo wbon.nn mixed in a looso heap, a tendency to enter into rapid and fermentation. The heap, 100, should bo kept compaot by allowing sheep, hogs, and cattle to trample it. It must also be kept moist, but not too wet. To provide the necessary moisture ot all times it is of great ad vantage to havo a good tank for the drainage The liquid in the tank should be kept saturated with plaster (sulphate of lime), which, when in solution, will convert tho volatile carbonate of ammonia into tho fixed salt, sulphate of ammo nia, and thus prevent loss. This effect will be produced, not oaly in the tank, but, when the e'ulphated liquid is pumped on tho heap, the car bonate of ammonia in the heap aIBO will bo con verted into a sulpbato, and retained. On every farm there is much refuse matter, which, when decomposed, trill not only make a good manure, but will also help to absorb the liquid which would otherwise drain off and be lest. Everything of this kind should be added to tho heap. business Notices vV ©flanGCS. mSSOLt’TION, The 00-pAktxeksihp of the ux d-rslgnod, coder the •tjle.of sINOI.K, HAKTSfAN A Ca.wMdiwulTfdontbrfl'iit ta«t„ bv tho bl* "f H. lUrtnjsL B interest in bo couccru to etogt-r, Nlwtrfc a Co. ulu alcu'’ will Hfttio th*-bns:oVt,Ld.-dtvl!»va-v -a*.
