IS OSKBET.—-Captfre of Sev-
KRrv Whales. —On the nighjj of Tuesday, the
Bth all., about 10 o’clook, when very dark, with
a pour down of rain, the villagers of St. Mary’s
Holm were surprised by a strange "hubbub and
noise in Holm Sound, the like of which they had
never heard before. Nothing daunted, however,
the villagers turned oat to a man, mastering
some ten boats, gotafloat, four men onan average
'to each boat, and foand a flock Of “bottle noses,”
that had lost their reckoning, blowing off steam
quite near the village'. Battle was given imme
diately, and after a short and hot pursuit, and
somebiooJy work, the whole fleck of seventy
whalen was atramled a little east of (he village,
amongst rugged rocks, everything pitch dark as
could be. The carnage, the yelling, and noise
that took place in the middle of that dismal
night may be imagined but not described.
Pitchforks, graples, scythe blades, and a few
lances were got from the village, and any other
lethal weapon that could do the slightest execu
tion. It is a wonder that no accident happened,
aa the men had to fight from tho boats, nut being
able to land on the slippery rocks, with deep
boles betwixt them. The whales are large on
tjhe average, and io 6ne condition. They will,
likely fetch some £2OO to Iho.valorotiß villagers.

I great is the surplus of American tonnage, that
I if aßhip was not built in Ibis country for three
years, and the averago annual losses- by shlp-
I wrecks, io , occurred during that time, oveo
; when we should have lonnogo enough for the
husiness of the United States and for ilie foreign
carrying tfrade. Ships are now the poorest
property a man can own, for they sail cl an
enormous expense, and, when not making money,
axo losing it very fast. Assessments, instead of
dividends, are the present results of ship-own*
ing, and the prospects iuThe future are very un
favorable. Our own ports, north hud
'full of ships, also the Paciflo, and ludia, and
China ports. Our markets are full of goods,
and we should not suffer if we did not reccivo no
East India cargo for one year; neither would
San Francisco Buffer if treated in the same way.
Let our shipbuilders cease theD; let not low
wages, cheap timber, and a waul of something
to do, tempt them to build this ypar. We had
better be idle than lose what we have made, as
all shipbuilders will this season. If they have
nothing of their own they will lose the property
of those who credit them. Wait fur better limes.

Tbs NitwMan-Moseit.—A tlbe Londonßoyai |
Institution, a few days ago, Professor Owen do* >
livered & lecture to a crowded audience on the ,
Gorilla, the recently discovered'nnimal of Cen- j
tral Africa, which bearsjthe nearest rcdemblancc
to man, of any one of'the monkey tribe that has .
hitherto been discovered, not excepting the \
Chimpanzee. Th? first traces of this creature :
were known in this country in IM7, and
from' the bones and the sketches of it which
Professor Owen received from missionaries, he |
inferred that the Gorilla .was one of the most i
highly.developed species of the monkey group. ,
In August last, a specimen of the Gorilla, pro- i
served in spirits, was received at the British [
Museum, and a well executed drawing of it, by j
Mr. Wolff, was exhibited. Professor Owen first
pointed out the anatomical characteristics of the
Gorilla, which distinguish it from other species
of monkeys, aod he afterward* mentioned such
particulars of its habits as be has collected from
those who have visited thotpartof Africa where
it is found. The points in which it approaches
nearer to man, than'any other qaadrumanous
animal, arc the shorter arm—particularly the
shortness of the humerus compared with the
foro-arxn, o longer developemcnt of the great toe,
a projecting nose-bone, and the arrangement of
tho bones of the feet to enable the creature to
stand more erect. The drawing of the Gorilla,
from the specimen in the British Museum, though
only two-thirds grown, represented a most for
midable animal, and, compared with the skeleton
of tho full grown specimen, tho skeleton of man
seemed very delicate. Not only &ro the bones
and muscles calculated to give great strength,
but the large capacity of the chest indicated the
powerful energy with which they wore stimula
ted. Tho part of Africa wbero the Gorilla is
found, lies from the equator to 20 degrees south,
on the western portion, in a hilly country abound
ing in palm trees and luxuriant vegetation. Its
food consists of fruits and vegetables, and its
habitation is in the woods, whero it constructs
nests of the intertwined bongbs perched at heights
varying from 12 feet to 00. It ovotds the pres
ence of tho negroes, and is but seldom seen, but
it is known to them as “tho stupid old man."—
'Tbc want of intelligence that has induced tho
negroeß to give it that nameis shown by its car
rying. away fruits and Bugar canes singly, in
stead of *yiog them together and carrying sev
eral of thetn off at one time. It is ia thus return
ing to lake away its provender into tho woods
piecemeal that the negroes Luke tbo opportunity
of waiting for and shooting it. The Gorilla is
a formidable enemy to encounter, and, in case
tho pan miss its mark, or only maim tho aoimal,
the negro is quickly overtaken and killed, or
dreadfully mangled by the canine teeth of the
creature. Sometimes when a negro is passing
unawares under a tree in which, a Gorilla is
seated, it will reach down its arm aod snatch the
man up by the throat and bold him till be is
strangled. Tbo elephant is an object of its at
tack, as they both live on the same food, and
holding on to a high brunch with its bind feet,
it will stoop down and strike the elephant with
a elg£- Tno Gorilla exhibits n strong attach
ment to it* young, as ad instance of which it
was mentioned that a female and her two young
ones basing been seen in a tree, she snatched np
one and ran with it Into the woods, and then re
turned to f«tch the other. Her retreat bad in
the meantime beai cut off, and when the gun
was levelled at her, as she held her ytmng one to
her breast, she waved her arm as if to beseech
for mercy. But it wan in vain; for ballet was
sent ihroogh her heart, and the young one was
wounded and captured The Gorilla is some
times seen walking with its arms behind its neck:
its usual mode of progression, however, is on all
fours Professor Owen mentioned several other
poiots in the habiU of the animal, as well as in
its osteology, to show its nearer approach to ntan
than other nnimals of the tribe ; and he conclu
ded by alludiog to the fossil remains of quadru
mane-, to show that the Gorilla, like maD. had
not existed till iho earth attained its pres
ent condition.
