Union or Foasci and EiotAND.— The English
papers publish the details of the project of Mr.
Chas. Boyd, for uniting England and Franoebya
gigantic tubular bridge across the channel bo
tween Dover and Cape Grinex, the nearest points
of the opposite coasts. In order to afford a pas
sage for Vessels of the largost sire, the bridge
would rest on one eido oa;the cliffs of Dover,
and on the other oq the diffiof Cape Qrinez, the
French abutments being raised one hundred end
fifty-three feet higher than- the English, to com
pensate for the difference of elmlionnf the cliffs.
The bridge would be supported by one hundred
and ninety towers at a distance or firo hundred
feet apart.; each hating a light to guide teasels
at night, and an alarm boll for a warning in fogs.
The greatest depth of the channel, osi the
line proposed, is ono hundred and eight r-six
feet. The bridge would have, two ormorerail
ways, which, it is estimated, could be trtti reed
In twenty minutes ; and It would be so bui It as
to admit the light of day, being lighed at t ight
by gas. In order to prevent all fear of inti si on
the projector proposes that each end ol tho
bride shall bo oommaaded by. a strong bat ery.
The towers, which would baofte hundred ft et in
diameter and two hundred and sixty feetliigb,
would rest on colossal bases, threohandred feet,'
p -juaro at the bottom, one hundred aod fifty feel
square at the top—rising to a height of fortj*.
feet above water—formed of bUcka of granite
united by iron bars. The elevation of the tops
of the towers would thus be three hundred feet
above the surface of tho water. Mr. Boy l es
timates the utmost possible cost of tbe.brid real
£30,000,000, but thinks it could bo boil for
half that sum, and that the whole cost woul 1 be
reimbursed to the company la eight years, fhis
project seems to promise mpeh belter sm cess
than that of Mr. Gammond, who propoa b to
build a tnnnel under the channel at a c< Bt of
ooiy £4,000,000
