A CONVICT'S Carcass.—An Australian paper
alluding to the incidents of penal life in the col
onies and to one of the most hardened convicts
of the day, eaye :—Captain A. Ketedicalfe was
convicted and sentenced to be traeaporigid for
fourteen years, and in "due course" was lkii. dad
in the colony of New South Wales. Ilia Career
iu Botany Bay, if transcribed with minuteedeli
ty would warrant, perhaps, the assumption that
it woo the most extravagant fiction ever penned.
There was scarcely a crime of which howls not
guilty in Australia, and of which be RR not
convicted. Petty (belie, burglary, forgery (he
once forged the name of Sir James Delwin:l, one
of the judges, and was transported to littefolk
Island for life,) and piracy—piracy on Lb high
efts, and the most extraordinary ease th 'was
heard of In this world. When be was on Way
to Norfolk Island in a chartered brig, call the
Wellington, under sentence of transportall for
life, for forging the signature of Sir J es
Bowling, he, one niglit, in a fearful galeof l ed,
i m
contrived, having muffled his irons, (his *sal
experience never deserting him,) to get apottlith
deck, and unobserved entered the doctor's Cab
in, whence ho ab:tceted from the medir u ne
chest a quantity of mile, which he threw to
the large copper vessel in which was made the
coup for the ship's company, the convicts 60 in
number, and the guard, consisting of 125 men of
the regiment en foot then quartered in the col
ony of New South Wales. On the following
day, shortly after dinner time. (one P. Ti).)
nearly every soul on board the Wellington was
seized with poise so violent that they became
perfectly helpless; whereupon Captain Ketch
calf. and nine men, who, at his bidding, had
abstained from tasting the coup, in the' most
quiet and deliberate manner imaginable took
possession of the Teasel. The guard was thrown
overboard alive, but more probably dying. The
master, officers and seamen shared the same
fate. And then the remaining forty convil
were brought up in their irons, and with eqn I
remorselessness were committed to tho deep.
A lItYT TO CONA,JIPTITP PEOTI.R.—The
of Iho reur, who is travelling at the
South, writes home to this ef f

oltly recent observations—as did those made
years ago in Italy—eunfirm me In the opinion
that tt in always best for sick people, especially
those upon whom coneomption has fixed its fatal
fangs, to stay at home. To seek relief in a
milder climate amongst strangers, is the great-.
eat possible mistake. The amour tof discomfort,
desolation and mental agony whiohaueh an in;
valid has to go through am his exit from earth,
(which his journey and Inevitable exposure al
ways hasten,) la indeed painful to contemplate.
To Italy and to the southern tarts of the United

ing there whose hopeless mid forlorn, away
from-home condition made my heart ache. At
home, with family and friends, they might have
been comparatively comfortable, even in the
coldest party of New England and Canada. t)(
course I do not intend what I have said to ap

A Bosse Asecourx.—A Canadian friend of
ours was telling us the other day how he MID,
aged to break a favorae horse of bigot one trick
thatoaking his halter whenever ho wee
fastened in the stable. Oar friend placed the
animal in qdtslion in a stable that stood exactly
on the edge of a high bluff Immo thirty feet above
the Lit. Lawrence. As usual, so soon as he woo
left alone, our pony broke his halter, backed oat
of the etableldoor, and, as a recteemry conse
quence, tumbled heels over head Into the river,
disappearing below the surface with the impettis
and gravitation of his fall. Ile wee next scen
swimming for dear life, and heading in shore.
Ile landed in a dripping condition, end woe
easily secured. Doubtless he pondered gravely
over the lesson, for ever afterward he never
made the slightest attempt to break his halter.
The plfilosphy of dealing with hems, and per
haps with nobler animals is to fight them uith
their own weapons, to let them be punished by
their own vices. If your pony has a trick of
backing, back him a quarter of a mile: if he
steps, tie him fast to the place from' twelve to
twenty-four hours without food or water, and he
will be glad to obey you when you call on him
At least so says our Canadian anthority.—Ad

RATHER SZTERT, OUT QUITO AS TRUT.—The
Flrrning Journal gives the following summary of
the meaning of Democracy about these days :
"Democracy"—convenient title—is used just
now to mean a great many different things in
different places. Is Pennsylvania it means
specific duties, but in New England ad valorem
ones, and in Virginia, no duties at all. It means
popular sovereignty in Chicago, but at Washing
ton it means federal aggrandizement. It is for
the Pacific railroad in California, but against it
in Georgia. 11 is for the fishing bounties in
Maine, but against them in Alabama. It fili
busters in Lousiana, though it dpuounces fili
busters in Michigan. In Ohio it assumes to
btaud oat the Cincinnati platform , but In Vir
ginia it plants itself on the resolutions of '9B,
and in Carolina it will agree to nothing short of
the :Charleston resolutions of IMO, reserving
the right to differ oven from them. All these
warring factiona claim to ho a single party, be
cause they Lave a name In common.

An English paper says: The judges hove

have not yet sett in their report to the Directors.
The number of peema on which these gentlemen
have had to pass judgement, has exceeded six
hundred. In this vast man of rhyme there
must have been loads of rubbish; but the chaff
has given more grains of 'wheat than the judges
themselves anticipated, and they are noxious
that a selection of some thirtrmere of the un

to which they award the prise. This, of mane,
coo be effected only with tbe consent of the
authors. The hulk of the poems sent in for the

Fox KANSA.9.-A gentleman who arrived in
this city last evening brings a startling rumor
from Kansas, from which Territory ho has come
direct.
Tie states that when he left Shawnee, which
was on Saturday last, the sth inst., there was. a
rumor current that Brown, who had been block
aded In some log huts, near Nebraska, and was
released by u force of the Free State citizens of
Kansas, and afterwards met the Missouri posse
under the direction of Dr. Woods, Deputy Mar

hung.
Our informant reached W etport on Sunday,
where the came rumor had p eceded him, caus
ing considerable sensation.
Mr. Smith the well Ito wn hotel keeper, in
Westport, was of the opi on that Dr . Woods
had not been hung, oltho hhe believed he hod
been made a prisoner by roan.
TudgoCempbell was Smith's authority for the
whole statement.

Tin several firms of De Rothschild have a
capital or sum at their inetantaneons command
amounting to $200,000,000; the similar capital
of the two Pcreires is at least 100,000,000 francs;
of the Hottingenrs, 75,000,000 francs; of Mires

to be prodigiously opulent. The Pereires have

the earliest and amplest proceeds.
Pock's Pena SPECULATION'I3.—We see it sla
ted that there is a lively heftiness done in Chicago,
St. Louis and other places in the ealaat "claim,"
town lots, An., at Pike's Peak.
From alf we see, lately, we are more and more
inclined to suspect that most that we hear about
the abundance of geld at Pike's Peak, has been
eat afloat by speculators there and elsewhere.
And when our readers remember what. a world
wide celebrity the gold diggings of lowa obtained
ids few weeks, they will probably bo inclined to
hesitate, consider and re-examine the matter
before they "go their pile" on fading fortunes
at the Pike's Peak diggings.
