Every one is now waiting forthemeeting of the English Parliament, on the 3d of February, and the opening of the French Cheatham on the As the Derby Ministry have proclaimed their "oonfidential" relations with Louie Napoleon, they will be called to a mere reckoning, since it will not do for them to plead ignorance of his intentions. ,No doubt, however, they will pro vide against the emergency, by getting some very pacific assurances from his Majesty, Who now finds, according to general rumor, that the storm he has raised has been rather premature. I Hie own address to the four French Chambers to be delivered four days afterward, will afford a further opportunity fur stilling the prevailing agitntion. It seems to be an aeoertained fact, that the feeling of the industrial population of France, is, at the present moment, decidedly against war, and the manifestations t 2 that effect are said to have been so strong as to convince the Emperor be has made a mistake, which he most correct without lon of time. But it has been made equally manifest that`-en the part of the junior officers of the army there is an trope- . Cicero for action, which will shortly become un governable and override both Emperor and peo ple. The beet Informed persons hiParis, while they now assert with great confidence that eve rything will be smoothed over for the present, are equally positive that war, Cannot long be averted. The preparations MID ,going on at all points give sufficient proof on timthead. To secure the concurrence, or at all events the neutrality, of Germany was the only remaining task. This effected, the combination will be perfect and the dream of the first Napo leon to suite all Europe against us will at length seemingly he realized. The plan to eplendld, and although of course no Englishman would doubt for an instant the ultimate character or its termination, the first dash of its might against us would probably prove the most eevere trial any nation was ever called uryou to sustain. The Bank of England have just agreed to lend a sum equal to $15,009,000 to the Metropolitan Board of Works at 31 per cent., to he expended during the next three or four years in comple ting the main drainage of London, and the pu rification of the Thatume- The loan is guaran tied by the government, and principal and In terest ore to be met by an annual rate equal to 1 f per cent. upon the value of all riaThitate in London. Lustros, Jan. 21.—Opinions an !to peace or war Mill fluctuate, but the prepondirance of be lief is that the French Emperor is desirous of isithdrawieg from his recent movement, as fast an he can do so without falling abruptly from the tone of menace to that of prudence. It it among the necessities of this position that the Bourse. should be kept liable for some little time longer to great uncertainties. A positive declaration, sufficient to restore imme diate confidence, would involve apparent hu miliation. Moreover, after the encouragement to insurrection given to the Italians, it would ho dangerous in more ways than one to let them find themselves Ouddenly deaerted. Accordingly, if a re-assuring statement ap pears one day in the acknowledged officialorgan, It le followed on the next by some remarks in the semi-official journals almost of an opposite tendency.. ''There is nothing to justify alarm," says the dlonireur, and the rentals experience an improvement. "Do not be too ready to believe in a pacific solution," says the Patrie or the Prose, and then comes a decline. The public tire time gradually prepared, so that a decision may be ultimately adopted one way or the other without appearing contradictory. At the game time the gentlemen who surround the throne, and who are in the secret of each pretended turn, are gratified by opportunities to operate for the rise or fall and replenish their exhausted purses. A LONDON toa.—The London Star of January 15th, thus deecribes one of the fogs for which the English metropolis is famous: We had another denim fog in the metropolis yesterday mornlog„neoeaskating the use of gee in the shops and all places of business, and Ito- Reding traffic) in every direction. About ten o'clock a remarkable phenomenon was witnessed with great interest by thousands of persona. To the ',eastward of London the fog appeared to open, showing in the gap, which stretched across tho_hemi Aire, a beautiful violet sky, from whioh fel a broad, bright belt of light. It was ahogethe a remarkable eight, and, as even from Waterloo ridge, its effect was most etriking.— The light 'spread aoross the Thames, over Eon- gerford blidge, and the tide being almost at the flow, the water was illuminated as by an electric reflector. All around and below the bridge woe darkness; but above, the outline of the river, with its floating craft was rendered sharply clear by the rays streaming from the sky. The phenomenon was only of brief demo tion; the fog gradually closed up on each tide, ebutting out the sky like a scene in the Christ mu piece. As the morning advanced, the fog descended, and it was only by the exercise of great caution that the Waffle of the street could be carried on; indeed, in soma parts of .the city end the East-and it was for a time traspended, whilst the steamboats on the river were com- Plied to cease running. At noon, the fog cleared off, and the weather became fine and !amenable. The conductor, coming up to a pas senger, demanded his name. "Jackson," was the reply. To the next he put the same interroga tory, and was promptly answered, "Charles Mo ran." The third gave hie name as "Ileadly" but the (=lb, not being quite so accommodating or supposing there was some unneemseary nee of his name, replied, "None of your busi ness! The conductor put the answers all down, and the load one was as near correct as the three preceding ones, though there wai l a kind of bittnese in the tone in which it Was uttered. In this way it goes, scarcely a passenger 'giving his right name to the conductor. the names thus collected, however, are sent on to head quarters with regularity and dispatch;l and Pres ident Moran, it is said, has begun to ihink that he and his brother officers have a great many nannisakee travelling over the road ! lately, as acutely a list is presented him but h dads his numb upon it, as well as those of all the other officers of the company.—Elmira Adocrther. I Bones FOR Taxes.—Bones aro always aeon ci, mulating in villages and about min residen ces which might be put to a better e than to encumber the streets, or to emit ,a, • agreeable odor from under the fences. There i nothing like decaying bones for all sorts of f nit trees. They are perhaps beet for pear trees I next for 1 apples, and then for quinces ; but are good for any kind of fruit, unless it b cranberi es, which seem to live and grew on little but we er. The true way would be to make the bones Into sup erphosphate of lime by grinding, and then add ing half their weight of sulphuric acid, to be ap plied in small doses every year. But as there are not bone mills everywhere, and as tho mak ing of superphosphate is of trade, which it could hardly be recommended to ail cultiiators to , learn, the next beet thing to be done is to break them up into inch pieces and mix themlwith the soil In which trees are transplanted. From half a peek to a peck for dwarf trees, and two to ' three peeks for trees designed for standards, is enough. The action will be slow but 'very last ing, continuing through the life of an ordinary tree. Bones are richly worth aiming for this purpose; and at the smallprice at which they can be had in most country places, they can be bought to advantage. They render a tree vig orous and healthy, and greatly improve ice fruit. It is not a bad plan to dig the soil about old trees. .
