—This splendid steamer, belonging to the Bay
line running to Norfolk was commanded by
Capt. Cannon, one of the beat of commanders.
She left here on Friday evening on her regular
trip with 80 persons on board and a light freight
and about two o'olook Saturday toornlig,
while about five miles sant!' of Smith's Point
light boat, and nearly off the mouth of Potomac,
river, a fire broko oat, irhieh baffled all the
efforts of those on hoard to extinguish, and she
burned to the water'' edge, the *reek after
wards sinking.
The fire was first discovered in the clothes
press, on the upper 'skein, when about five
miles below Smith's Point Light boat; some
eight or ten miles from shore, at fifteen minutes
past two o'clock on Saturday morning the 29th
ult. There were twenty-six passengers on
board, all of whom were sewed, except Rev. Mr.
Curtiss, of Chester, S. C., and it is impassible
to account for his loss. The passengers all
united in their efforts to save the steamer, end
the hose worked well until it was burnt, Noth
ing was saved of the mails, baggage or freight.
Mr. Capron of Wilmington, N. C., had his wife
and child with him: he threw the child over and
then jumped in himself, followed by his wife,
all of whom were pickaup by one of the boats
and rescued. The eaptain, offmereand all hands
displayed great coolness during the exciting
scene, and the boats were launched in safety,
and all finaliy saved, except Mr. Curtiss and one
of the waiters. The officers and crew consisted
of forty persons, and they with the passengers
made sixty-six in all.
Mr. Parka Bays when the fire was first dis
covered it had made but little progress, but
very soon the whole steamer appeared to be in
flames.
The Captain was on watch at the time, and
was informed of the fire, when be immediately
gave the signal to stop the engines. The fire
engines were put to work, and although they
worked well, and large quantities of water were
thrown on the element, it appeared to have no
effect in subduing, bat rather tended to in
crease the Barnes. The clothes prose was for
ward of the machinery, and the berth occupied
by Mr. Curtiss was aft, aid, it is eupposed, that
he was in a sound sleep and rather hard of hear
ing, consequently did not know anything of the
disaster. Ile was about 75 years ef age, and •
Minister of the Presbyterian dentimintiep.
The passengers were all safely placed in tha
life boats 1,, minutes after the alarm was first
gives, and were taken to the light houae, where
they were cared for. it was very foggy at the
time, and the dames of the burning boat could
not be seen at the dildanee of 100 , yards. They
only found the light ' ilinetant ring

-In Colman's comic tales, entitled 'Dread

the manager of a theatre to personate an ele

board figure of the quadrup ed, dividing the lege
equally between them, one of them taking the
fore-leg-Bas hie share and the other the posterior
pair. The elephant thus constituted performed
greatly to the delight of the audience; it moved
about the stage with a majestic tread, and was
talked of far and near, until a quarrel arose be
tween the worthies inside, owing to &jealousy
which the MAO who stood in the hind-legs
conceived of hie associate. Strange muffled
sounds and hallatiffied oaths were heard to pro
ceed from the animal'. stetnach, and the' two
performers fought till they had torn tbe paste
, board figure to rags, 'mattering it about the
stage, and stood unused kefore the audience.
A combat quite ae interesting is at present
going on inside of the great paineboard elephant
which figures on the stage of the American Union.
The fore-legs and hind-legeare in a quarreland
have already come to blows.. One of the moat
remarkable indications of the party which ban

ICE Boer!.—There are eight or ten of these
"Inetitutions" on the North river, Kaye the Troy
Budget, while at Rodson, Newburgh, Pough

they are quite numerous. Riding on an lee
boat fills one with queer sensations'. Coasting
and riding on hand Oars, or skating even; is very
tams sport. compared with it.. With a miff
bree e and a careful helmsman, one of these
boa . will run away from a tornado, and distance
the fastest locomotive that ever whistled. Their
epees is like the epeed of the wind, and when
they tack, it is like the whirlwind. In a mild
breeze, the ripen is' really luxurious, though to
a novice it is' somewhat suggestive of a broken
head; or au abrasion of the cuticle, covering his
protruding probocis. Bat aroldente very seldom
happen from capsizing; it is only when the ma
chine •is plunged into an air hole--that the
helmsman did not see—that the "fun" amounts
to poeitire unpleasantness. But then a little
'cold duck" is considered a delicattr•moreetto by
epicures.
