these days. For sale by Kay &Co , Wood St.

the Tribune in any other light than as an attend

and shallowest, farce. We have great confidence,
however. that this sort of thiug is intensely de
spised- by the people, and that every day ren
ders such exhibitions more and more odious,
and let ushope less frequent."
The Press is entirely wrong aa to the motives
for what he terms the "assaults" of the Republi
can editors, on Senator Douglas. They do not
proceed from prejudice, as a reference to the
history of the matter will prove, but from a very
natural feeling of disappointment which any
class of persons must experience when an in
=dividual, upon whom, in all sincerity and con
fidence; they have bestowed their sympathies.,
as well as their praise, finally shows egos of
back-sliding and infidelity. As long as Mr.
Douglas fearlessly and in apparent good faith
opposed the Lecompton iniquity, in defiance of
executive " Proscription and partizan malignity,
every Republican in tho country waii ready 'to i
stand at hie back and to speak to him words of
v ent e ncourage and comfort. This was their
cauree gth congressional contest in ref-
arenas to that notorious measure, nor did they
change theirposition until he, alarmed, as itseem-
ed, at the new aasociations with which his lode-
pendent course had eurrounded him, commenced
Searles of attacks on their men and their mess- l'
ures. It was then that they discovered in him I I
an anxiety to compete with Mr Buchanan him-1
self in the ignoble strife for Southern favor, sod
they were mortified to discover that he per
mitted no occasion to pass on which he did not
misrepresent his late associates, under the name
of "Black Republicans," and scornfully disclaim
all cninmunlon or sympathy with them. , No tool
of the Buchanan administration might to place
the Republican party in a worse position before
the country than did this same Senator Douglas.
Redenonnced it as a party of Abolitionists—as
devoted to • the dissemination of sectional and
disunion sentiments—and as having lenders
devoid of patriotiem and stateamauship. After
couse so illiberal and unjust as this, was he
entitled to the "enigma" of Republican Jour

contest. Would the Preis have the Republican
editors, to view with favor his attempt to crawl
back into the good grace, of the Administration
party his entrancetuto their caucuses over the
heads of men who hare lollies/de with their politi
sal friend, because they stood by him—his abject
acquiescence-in the President's demand for the
' unrestricted use of $30,000,0'00 when the tui
tional treasury was empty, and after the Presi

. bilitlea
Worthy of being enzoted with grave respects'-
? Must Republicans endorse all these
irregularities, in order to escape the charge of
'being "prejudiced" and under the influence of
narrow and unworthy feelings?
We Say to the admirers of Mr. Douglas—re
store your leader to the position he held in the
beginning of the controversy, which has so con
splcuouely placed him before the country, and
we will honor him as we honored him on that
occasion. But we cannot suppress our dissatis
faction at hie subsequent course, which we
gard a, characterized by the grossest selfiehoese
arid the most degrading cowardice.

oissnxisirros, Sunday. Jan, :VI, I,l9.—The
singular course pursued hy certain Treasury
officials, in reporting that Secretary Cobb dif
fered in his views on the an
question from
the distinguished Chairman of the Committee
on Ways and Means, has resulted in the report
ing of a resolution from that Committee, which
was agreed to, Inquiring of the Secretary of the
Treasury the actual and probable receipts, from
alurces. during the current rind next fiscal
years, and whether the same will be adequate to
pay the expenses of Government.
It is surmised that the Treasury Lepartment
wishes to dodge the responsibility for the in
creasesf the Tariff; while, at the SAW time, the
President is preparing a Special Message, Chow.
ing the deplorblc condition of the Treasury.
This message is now pearl r eady for tranvinl3

Such to the condition of the Treasury, an wit
be shown by President Buchanan, and yet tht
Treasury officiate declare that Mr Cobb want.,
no increase of the Tariff, but only authority to
issue 110,000.000 of Treatoley note., nhould
they be needed.
The resolution adopted will force the Secretary
to his thaw heed. Should he anewer that the
receipts will cover expenses, then Congress will
not force money into his coffers. The Commit
tee of Ways and Means intend that he shUll
shoulder his proper share of the responsibility.
It is but to Secretary Cobb to say that with
in less than a week peat he has given his entire
approval to Major Phelps' bill, the substance of
which I gave In my dispatch of the 23.1 inst.
This bill, it adopted, Would increase the ' , tonne
six and a half million, on the amount of blot
year's importations.
The action of the Senate caucus, yesterday,
in resolving that-it is impolitic to interfere with
the' Tariff at the present session, has somewhat
confused the President's programme. A re
shuffle will take place,. as the game is becoming
desperate. Mr. Lthebanan dissents from the
views of the Senators, and will not abatulith hie
dposiay.
tion. Ilia message in expected on Wednes-
A caucus of the bemnerms of the Comte will
be held en Tuesday or Wednesday. to consider
the emergency, and what ys is best to be done.
The Committee of Wa and Means have al
ready made reductions amounting to three and
a half millions on the twenty-five millions of
estimates.—N. I'. Mws.

tonnage of the District Court of the United
States for the Western District of Pennsylvania
is an interesting one. Judge Thomas Irwin
having resigned a question arises in the House
whether the investigation can be conducted, now
that he ha, reall9ned. ' But this is nothing In the
efforts making in - favor of a successor of Irwin .
The leading candidates are Hon. Wilson M'Cand
less, of Pittsburg, and Hon. Samuel Gilmore,
and Hon. Joshua B. Howell, of Fayette county.
The first I have already spoken of. He Is an
old friend of the President. The second -is
preeldent judge of the Washiagton, Greene. and
Fayette judicial district, also a friend of the
President; the third was an old line Whig in
Mob, a native or New Jersey, and a highly me
compliehed gentleman. But the most active of
all the applicants are Mr. P. C. Shannon, of
Allegheny county, and Mr. Thomas Cunningham
of Beaver county. Shannon if Senator Bigler 's
