Editors In my humble judgment you j do not properly estimate the project of establishing | a tjetc county up the Monongahela and Youghiogheny valleys. Whatever tends to dovelope the resources and add to the population of them regions must re suit advantageously to Pittsburgh, They buy their iron, nails, castings, tea, sngar, molasses, liquors, queenswares, hardwares, clothing, newspapers and manufactured articles mostly in Pittsburgh; and to 1 enable them to pay their bills, they supply the towns and cities of the Ohio and Lower Mississippi rivers with coke and coal. In thlsway nearly all tho float ing capital of these valleys falls ultimately into the lap of Pittsburgh. The erection of the new county, proposed, would in cream the population, enlarge the l business and further develops the agricultural end I mineral resources of your up-country neighborhood: | and, certainly, If their population and, as a sequence, their neceittiice were increased, they would buy more i 1 of these articles from you. j Since it has been determined that, in case of a divis-1 ion of a county, the inhabitants nut off are not re. j ’leased from liability for their proportion of the debts I of tbe old county, Pittsburgh cannot urge the indebtedness of Allegheny county with much force against the separation. With your own and suburban population—immense as it Is, and increas- j tog with great rapidity—you must soon consolidate j and become yourselves a sort of imporitm in imperio, ] separate and distinct from the county, a coniumma. I tion that both parties may soon devoutly wish * 1 wherefore, then, object now to loosing a small part I of your territory to eld in effecting an object that I must always contribute largely to your interests T 11 hope, on further reflection, you will have a good word I to say in favor of the proposed sew coonty. If es-1 Üblishod, It would he inseparably tied to you by iron I and water—one of the thriftiest little oonotiesinthe I State, and become a vast feeder to your commercial j m * n * j PITTSBURGH. Thi But Dootob fo* Asoial3 —We have «en a great dealof.dootoring for tiok animals —some successful, Mid great deal of. it unsuc cessful—and we hare long since come to the con clusion that the most skillful phjsloian we have erer met with is Doctor Norse- If an »*»'">«! (as well as human befog) Is not carefully taken care of—nursed, all (ft medicine in the world can do but liuie good- And, on the other hand, with good nursing, medicineis generally unnecessary. Our own observations lead to the opinion that in at least uiuo cases out of too. as commonly ad ministered, medicine does more harm than good. An eminent New York physician said that taking medicine was always • choice of evils— that, being poisons in nearly**!! inaUnoes, they necessarily did harm to theSaysUm, and were never to be employed was a strong probability that they wonld&eUefil more than jojure. This is not tho rulfiadopted in doctor ing horses, by most horse-jqticeyß, and others having cars of those animal* if we might judge from tho way ia which gunpowder, salts, red pepper, turpentine, whiskey, feorroeivesublimato and other violent retnepies toe administered nt hap-haiard, incrfiasifig'Jp nearly all cases the violence of the disease. / U *ay be laid down os a general rule, that ifm mdeh safer to give too little than too much Dedieify* ; and that none should be given unless t we Jpmw dietinotly how it i» to operate and whatwtfcfec^.^ Somo years ago a valuable horse caught oold,~ and was troubled with a oough so severe that he might be heard half a mile, and which appeared to be rapidly reducing his flesh. Wo bad ao aboadanca of prescriptions from neighbors of all kinds of-frightful medicines, enough to have killed him had ho been in perfect health. We concluded to dUcard all, and to place under the attention of Dr. Nurse. Great care was taken never to work him toperspiration, he was blanket ed whenever the weather was chilly—he was fed regularly and moderately on succulent food, all such food partaking of the character of expec torants, and favoring a free discharge from the lungs—and all his other wants were observed as well as we were able to, and promptly supplied In six weeks be was perfectly well. Had some nostrum been employed, it might have injured him and prevented recovery ; or if it had not. Dr. Nurse might not have been called in ; but if be had, and the medicine bad not greatly re tarded his recovery, and he bad got well in eix months it would unquestionably have been re garded as an extraordinary core. At anolheT time, a valuable mare, eleven years old, was badly sweenied by hard work—tho worst case of weeny we ever met with. It was generally re garded as a hopeless case—but various remedies were proposed and offered, costing from $2O down to $3. We conoluded that oar old friend Dr. Nurse, should be again called to the exclu sion of all these fellows, and the consequence is that with simply carefol moderate treatment, the aaimal is well and the sweeny filled up. The majority of sick horses get well; every owner tries some remedy; and that particular i medicine that he happened to be using at the time, gets all the credit—although it retarded i more or less, his recovery. : maflt ®*ke one exception in tho general rejection of medicines—there is one which, if given moderately oan scarcely ever Jojure and may often do much good. This is powdered charcoal—a poweful antisepUo and absorbent of I bad matter, while nnlike most other medicines, jit does not irritate—a most important advantage A clear illustration of this advantage recently oocurred in the case of a fine calf five months | old, which , had become bloated by eating too ! *Moy apples, blown down by a violent gale. Its aides distendod -by wind to an almost incredible size; a solution of aalerattus was poured down its thToat repeatedly, and as often thrown out violently on account of its irritating aolion on the throat of the young animal. It continued for eighteen hours with Hule or no improvement; when a large teaipoonfUl of pow dered charcoal, mixed with half a pint of water was given. The dose was swallowed without any difficulty, andinfoar'hours the ealf appeared to bo perfectly well. Charooal rooy be given in nearly all oases of derangement of thodfgesUon, whether with men or beasts, with great advan tage. One-half to a teaspoonful is a full dose for a man, and as much moro for an animal as its food exceeds that of a mao. We do not mean to say there are not other medicines that do not occasionally prove emi nently nseful; but, unless they can be given with a full comprehension of their mode of notion, and with an undoobted knowledge of the exact nature of the disease and their use sanctioned by very clear and die’ Moot previous success, it would be much safer to discard them— Country Gentleman. Ststxm in Far* MAHAotiiEjrr. — Ed* : Order is a necessary element in the success of every mao, but with no class Is Its fitriot observ ance moro requisite than with tho farmer. Tho profits of farming, like other business, depends almost entirely upon the system that Ispureucd, and the order maintained. No business will or dinarily prosper under bad management. If a merchant persist, for any length of time, in a poor system of managment, he is almost sure of a failure, if a mechauio persues the business of his trade without takfog the care necessary to perform every thing in a systematic manner, 1 success will never crown his effort*; and* in foot, I in whatever business a man may be engaged, un less he Is governed by eome system, in the labor ; he performs, he may as well conolude that bis : business will not be a paying one, however pros | perous H might be under good management.— ! ftut, as I have said before, with no class of per sons is the striol observance of system more re quisite than with the former. If he be an idle and shiftless man, or if he does everything in a wrong time and in an improper mtutuer; if he allows bis buildings to go without the repairs necessary and decay for want of a few dollars expended by way of repairs; if his walls are left to tumble down and hie fences are negleeted un til his cattle easily gain access to and destroy his crops; or if he coffers the weeds to overrun bis farm, and in this allows his noils to be ex hausted without himself receiving any remuner ation for the samo; or if he pursues the skinning system/and eaffen his form to deteriorate, he will undoubtedly have to complain that forming .is a dull and profitless business. I Vesuvius.*—We have been permitted to malco an extract from a letter addressed by Hon. I Joseph It. He soys: “At tho present moment the people of thiß oily ore in greet excitement et the indications of o dangerous eruption from Mount Vesuvius for along time great masses of lore have boen issuing from apertures on the aide of tho moun tain, about half way up ; and these aporluree have been augmenting in number and eizo so rapidly that not only ia there apprehension of an eruption, bnt serious fears are expressed that the sides of tho monniain will soon bo so worn and perforated aa to be no longer able to sustain the superior portion, and people are leaving the vicinity and coming into tho oily proper. Last night the mountain was truly grand. The hun dreds of great fires on the Bides (rod-hot lava) were terribly brilliant, while the vast volume of smoke that rose slowly from the crater abovo had ite side illuminated by the fire on tho flanks, and presented an appearance of indescribable grandeur. I, of oonrse, am nnable to say whether these fears are well founded; bnt thoy are entertained by men of science and experi ence here.— Xat. Int.
