Statistics opMaswactvbbs.—We hero beoo

lowing table of the manufactures of the United
Sfctw. u shown by. the census of 1860, the value
of whioh is considerably Impaired by the length
or time it has taken .to publish It—eight years.
We .'publish it more as a curiosity and to'show
what kind, of information our census reports
contain, as usually tuade up, not for any tblqo
the table possesses, for it is unreliable. The
value of the manufactured products for the
whole State of Pennsylvania is not as great as
the production of the city of Philadelphia alone
as a comparison of the reoent statistics of the
manufaciures of this oily, published in the
Ledger, will show. To show what dependence is
to bo placed upon the accuracy of this table it is
only necessary to compare New. York and Penn
sylvania. In New York the manufacturing es
tablishments are set down at 28,568, tie value
of their production $237,695,249. In Pennsyl
vania the establishments are given as °1 GO5
production $166,044,910. The difference ik the
number of establishments 1b iess than two thou
sand, but the difference in the production is sB° .
662,339, or considerably more than half the
whole product of than 23,000 manufac
turing establishments in Pennsylvania. Again
the capital Invested in manufactures InNew York
la $99,904,403, la Pennsylvania, $94,478 810
a difference of less than six millions of capital*
yet a difference of eighty.two'miUioos of produc
tion Does anybody credit such statistic* as
these.

KOI. 11. 0. Comingo, of Stonbenime, delivered
tno second of his coarse of lectures on Homo bo
roro tho Smithsonian InsUtuto at Washington
.city on Wednesday erening. Tho Slar soys:
. ft was, as wo anticipated, very interesting,
being founded on the lecturer’s own observations
in the Imperial city, lie spoke eloquently of
! “0 monuments or ancient grandeur that had
withstood the war of the elements for fifteen and
eighteen centuries! On a largo map of Rome he
; pointodout and described the old Capitol, around
which oling so many olassio associations of olden
time. lie pointed out the old prison, where tho
confederates of Calaliue were confined, and
~'.,. p 5 l,r Paul aro said to have honored
with their presence. 110 told of a spring in the
prison, which the gnldo told him had been mir
aculously called into existence by Taul for tho
purpose of baptizing tho jailor and twonty-ocren
or bis fellow prisoners whom he had couierted.
The lecturer’s opinion of tho spring was that it
was an artificial arrangomeut, similar to our
modern hydrants He pointed out and describ
'd “>o celebrated Temple of Jupiter Capitolinas,
coloring four acres of ground, nnd> being the
u ‘?“° Bto onspicuos, and the most
opulently furnished of all the temples., This
was the great depository of tho spoils of war,
and was a most magniflocnl structure, costing
eqmialont to fifteen millions of dollars. Uo el
oquently desoribed the Palatine, the residence of
Imperial grandeur. Tho grandest and best pro
severed of all the ruins of antiquity was tho
Coliseum, a mammoth drawing of which was
suspended over tho stage. This was a glndiato
nal establishment, constructed under Kero. It
was ofan eliptical form, and covered six acres
or ground. During a period of four hundred
years, this was the scene of (ho most inhuman
barbarity, thousands of men and beasts being
ttcrifioed in bloody combats for the gratification
of a morbid public taste. At the end of four
hondredyears the Christian religion put a stop
to these bloody sports. The Pope had recently
endeavored to convert the structure into a wool
en factory, and eubaequently into a saltpetre
faotory, but both of tbeso enterprises had failed
and the ruin was kept for the gratification of the
curiosity of tourists.
