George Stewart, Esq., was next called upon,

talking—for talking unnecessarily, in tbe shops
tH a matter for discipline; neither did we see any
lounging; the boys were all diligently at work,
each appearing intent on the performance of the
greatest amount of work in the shortest lime.
The labor in each of these shops is purchased
by a contractor, who pays the Refuge a given
sum per day fur caoh boy employed. Thus in
dustry and discipline are best promoted, while
the revrnuc derived from this source is con-'

Unfortunately, since the panic «.f lost year a
portion of the boys have been unemployed,
which is something remarkable, as we know of

A oompaei little gas work, near iho main
buildings, affords a—copiooa supply of light
throughout the building, at a rery considerably

before the boys are admitted ; they also make
up the boys’ clothes, and perform the washing
and ironing of Iho establishment. The rougher
sex thus experience all the advantages of female
attendance, without ever suing the girls the
sexes being kept entirely separate.
We were favored by au exhibition of tho per
