Rs-xlectiob of Mr. Fsssbsdbs.—The re*
election of this gentlemen to the United States
Senate, U bailed with feelings of gratification on
the pari of the Republicans thiongbout the
Union. His course in Che Senile his been un
exceptionable in an eminent degree, with all
hie efforts were directed to Che perpetuation
of .Republican principles. Of his election the
Portland Advertiser thus speaks:
•'Both branches of the Legislators concurred
jealerday in re-electing Hon. William Pitt Fes
senden to the United States Senate, for the term
of eix years from the 4th of .Maroh ensuing. In
the Senate the vote was unanimously in his fa
vor, and in the House he had a majority eo large
and decissive that the opposition eeemed to be
merely nominal. It is a note worthy and almost
unprecedented fact too that Mr. Fessenden re
ceived this Urge vote without any of the inter
vening machinery and arrangements of the
Caum. We understand from our Augusta cor
respondent that a meeting for consultation was
informally called for Monday evening, but that
the Republican members of both branches of the.
.Legislature deemed it needless to attend—the
feeling in favor of Mr. Fessenden being so en
tirely unanimous that there was no necessity of
oaovasslng or seeking any of it, in
advance of the formal voting in U&Sennit and
House. As the personal gralifioWon OMjfyhciv
ing an honor is always greatly 'the
mode in which it is conferred, We think Mr.
Fessenden is to be congratulated upon the pecu
liarly cordial and felicitous manner in which the
Legislature of Maine has again committed the
honor and interests of the State to his keeping.
To be the unanimous choice of a tarty so largely
in the majority as are the Repubuc&osof Maine,
is no small honor to any man, and When this
preference Is manifested after the recipient has
been tested by five years service in his high sta
tion, it amounts to an endorsement eo unreserv
ed that neither language nor act could add to
its emphasis or its significance."

tssox Family.— Mr. Judson J. Hutchinson, one
of the brothers of the celebrated Hutebinsoo
Family, died at Lyon, Mass., on Tuesday, Jan.
11. Judson, John and Asa, and Ihclrsieter Abby
made their public appearance as a quartette
bsod nearly fifteen yean ago, and attracted
overflowing audiences in this City, and' else
where for some years. The old Broadway Taber
nacle, seating over three thousand persona, was
packed night after night by enthusiastic admir
rers of the “Family’s’' simple melodies. The
whole party afterwards visited England, where
they received a quite as oordiaL Lay
ing claim to no •p*spal excellence 's* musicians,
the brothers asd.ihetrvmeter commended.them
selves topopulerfevor by their unostentatious
manner, and made a decided Impression by their
proclivity to reforms. All of thorn were Aboli
tionists, and their “Songs of Freedom” were
the staple article in thoir musical programme.
Nine or ten years ago, the Family was broken
up. Abby, the sister, married a eon of the Rev.
Dr. Patton, of this City, and retired from the
publio conoeris. The three brothers continued
their were fioally compelled to sus
pend their performances on account of an at
tack of insanily which afflicted Judeon.who has
jast died. Jesse, sn older brother, was the man
ager of the concerts, and nnder his skillful en
gineering, tbefsmily were placed in circumstan
ces of pecuniary abundance. Perhaps no troop
of singers ever enjoyM * more aatisfdbtory suc
cess. Of late years, »e brothers have seldom
appeared. The public taste demanded a style
of music more cultivated, and the day of the
Holohinsoos weal by. Of the original fonr
to whom many (honsands in this City were once
glad to listen, only three now survive. Mrs.

An Impobtaht Bitit.—An extra term of tbe
Circuit Court ni opened yesterday at Prince
ton, (Ind.l to try the important suit of the
Straight Line road against tbe dty of Evans
ville, for the payment of the interest coupons, on
$lOO,OOO city bonds issued to the road. The
case involves the oity’a subscription of $200,000
to the stock of the rood. If the decision of the
U. S. District Court iu tbe ossa of tbe Western
Road agalost the city of Jeffersonville, be bos-
Vetoed by our Circuit and the oily be allowed to
go behind the records of Its Council, and show
that the requititions of tbe charter wero not
complied with In mating the subscription, tbe
claim of the road for the bonds will be a deeper*
ate one.
The charter authorized the city .'to subecribo
for the stock on the petition of (ico-ihirvb of [the
resident freeholders. It appears by tbe aoo
omenti on file, that thei subscription was mado
in 1852 on the petitioniof 284 persons, pretend
ing to be holders of real estate in the city. Up
on a thorough investigation of the list, it ia
found that nearly fifty of the persons on the list,
held no land in the ciiy, and had never been
freeholders, and were hot, therefore legal sign
ers of (be petition. It furthermore appears that
there were then livlog in Evansville IGG real es
tate holders—more than half the number of
signers—who refused i to sign the petition.—

The Emperor is a zealous advooate for the ab
olition of serfdom, but he is oompelled to move
with great caution In consequence of tbo oppo
sition of some of the-nobles. In addition to the
above, there are about eighty thousand proprie
tors, with from ous to ten serfs eaoh, employed
in towns and obliged fo pay obrock,
or tribute, to their masters. Theao are not
new]y as well off as tbe serfs on the plantations,
and tbe imperial measure is intenued to reach
all.
Toa £Lt. llail liaasArTßa.—Bishop Clark,
of Rhode Island, at tbe close of an excellent
lecture ou “Public Opinion,” remarked that ho
believed the pubUo Rontiment of a civilized and
Christian society is truer and purer to-day, than
it ever was before. Tho forces of evil may
seem to be as etroog as ever; but tbe ecalo is
gradually turning in favor of'trutb and right.
The labor of the past has not been lost; the
labor of to-day is not ip vain. No holy word,
no righteous act can everdio. Strike the chords
of inineneelwUh a manly hand! Their vibra
tion will riog on forever. Be hopeful! We are
moving on toward high noon; hardly out of the
twilight yet, it may be, but thank God It is the
twilight of the morning and not of tbo evening,
and the boor hand fin the gr**t dial plate of
time never goes back. Slowly and silently, ex
cept when it strikes at long interval tho pro

tbe moridiao.

Obi “Mountain county” exchanges bring os
frequent reports of stampedes amongthelr negro
population, and sometimes affect desperate wrath;
we reoollect when such occurrences were fre
auent hereabouts, and whenever they happened,
tier® would be considerable fuming, fretting,
and some swearing among the violimß of mis
placed confidence in negro flesh; bat, gradually,
it would wear off, and they became reconciled to
their losses. So it will have to be in the border
counties. Although the Panhandle is almost
stripped of Its slave property, we oannot say that
the general wealth is any less than it ever was,
or that the people livo less contentedly, or get
rich any slower than they did when every fam
ily, almost, sported its darkey or darkles. The
fact is, we have reconciled to onr priva
tion, and are rather disposed ts congratulate
ourselves, as upon a happy riddance. The Pan
handle is, perhaps, as free, now, of African ele
ment, either bond or free, ab any other aeotion
of the Union, without exception. —lVelhliurg

Continuous Dkcbiasb or Marriages in Bos
ton.—There has been, aoeording to the official
records, a remarkable and steady decline inmar
riages in the city of Boston for the past nine
years. One reason for this deoline is theamelio
ration of the marriage laws of other States;
another, doablles, is the hard times and the ex
oess of laborers over the demand, which tending
to a redaction of wages, dolors many from un
dertaking the additional expense of a family.
Another cause is said to be the alarming Increase
of female expenditures in matters of dress, &c.
The number of certificates of marriage issued
in 1858 is one thousand less than during the
year 1854, and smaller than for any of the pro
vioos eight years. For the three years endiog
in 1855, the number of marriage .certificates
issued was 97C2, against 7910 for the three years
coding in in 1858, a decrease during the latter
period of 1840.— Boston Traveler.
A Frihch Caucus. —The following extract
from Arthur Young’s Travels in France and
Spain daring the years 1787-8-9 might be sup
posed to describe a caucus of democratic repre

in January, 1790. i
“In this club, the business tfatJt is to be brought

the motions are read that are intended to be
made there, and rejected or corrected and ap
proved. When these have been) folly agreed to,
the whole parly .are engaged to eupport them.
Plans of eeoduot are there determined; proper
persons nominated for being on committees, and
presidents of the Assembly named. And 1 may
add, that such is the majority of numbers, that
Whatever passes in this club, is almost sure to

got on the tram and tendered the conductor fif.
teen cents In payment of his flare for the fonr
miles travel. Twenty cents were demanded; five
being added to the fifteen because he had not 1

and the conductor slopped the [rain and ejected
him from the cars. Mr. Bealejbrobght this ac
