Important to Fabmirs—To Pbbvkht Rcst
ih Wobat. —We are indebted to Mr. R. G. Car
michael, Commission Merohant of this city; for
the following vSluable information with reference
to tho preparation of seed wheat. The process
has been folly tested by farmers in England and
Ireland, with entire success :
To Prevent Smut ih Wheat —Dissolve half
a pound of Sulphate of Copper in three quarts
of boiling water. After the mixture has oooted
sprinkle it over two bushels of wheat, stirring
it Ihroogh until the whole be wet. Pat it up
in a heap, turning it occasionally for an hour,
when it wilt be ready for sowing.
Should wet weather or any other causepre
vent it being sown immediately, spread it thinly
on a dry floor, giving H an occasional turning,
and it will not suffer injury for weeks
The above was received from a very Intelli
gent as veil as extensive farmer and miller, who
says, in regard to It.
“Where this has been carefully carried out
it has been found effectual in preventing smut in
wheat. Of course, no man should row smutty
wheat, but oven smutty wheal will produce grain
perfectly free from smut, if it be carefully
dressed as above. The reason that Sulphate of
Copper produces this result is, that smut being a
fungus, which, when tho balls are broken at
taches itself to the ends of the wheat, and in
many cases kills the wheat and grows in its
T>lace, tho solution kills the fungus, but is not
powerful enough to hurt the wheat, fare should
be taken to prevent any animal eating grain
dressed with this preparation, as it is poisonous

Th* King of Prussia bos not been much im

“The royal patient was pcrfcally sane all day

quite jolly ; the dinner was anuounoed, the com

A CoHTtsrxD Ssat— We see it stated that
Hon. Wm. A. Howard bos served a notice upon

some time since intimated our opinion that Mr.

know the exact grounds upon which he princi
pally relies, but our knowledge of him renders
us entirely secure in (be belief that big premises

that when tho lime shall arrive be will present

A Tsutd.—“Occasional,the Washington

“It is a characteristic of Washington politi

day, among the people here—among the masses
—juft as much feeling against the Administra
tion os there is anywhere else. But the local
influences of patronage and combinations of pol
iticians, of jobbers and office-seekers make up
ao atmosphere of their own, and flatter them
selves that it is publie opinion. I have never
known these classes to be quite so Infatuated as
they now are in regard to tho publie sentiment
throughout the country. It may well be said,
“Where ignorance is bliss *tia folly to be wise.”
