How Wombs dka& Elaedsbips is Kasbas
A correspondent writing from Kansas says :
During our trip, we encountered an Indiana
family moving to their homo iu Kausas. Tbo
husband oatne to this Territory a year ago apd
located ; and now, having returned to Indiana
Xor his household gods, was bringing them to
their new Western home. They were (raveling
in a wagon, closely covered, and drawn by two
horses. They had been about two months on the
way, and etnoe reaching the Stato of Missouri
had "camped out,’* or lodged in their wagon,
not spending n Single night under a roof. The
wife was a genial, apple-faced woman, of about
thirty ; anil, like the children, (two little girls
ono of three, the other of six years,) seemed to
onjoy a degree pf health and vigor very unusual
among American ladies ! When we met them,
(he weather wajl exceedingly severe; (he ground
was covered with etx Inches of enow, and tbe
.thermometer ;e(ood below zero. They camped
near us for onenlght, and persisted iu lodging
in their wagon, though we found livery difficult
to keep warm In a good log house, whore bed
clothing was plenty. In tbe morning on going
out to the wagon, I found the children and (he
mother in excellent spirits. In reply to my
question whether they bad Buffered from (be cold

certainly remarkable; Uls unquestionably tho

Tns CotTos Chop.— The receipts at the ship
ping ports continue larger than ever; and short
crop croakers, for the first time in the history
of cotton growiog, all aro darnb. Tho reoeipts
of last week, contrary to expectation, were the
largest of any week this season, reaching 145,-

ports from iutcrior towns and depots through
out the Southern country stato that at no former
period was tho accumulation of cotton so laTgo
as it is now. Under the circumstances it is
natural that tho prico-should decline. Since
last week the deolino Is Jo. a £c.; we hear of a
similar dccllnq In Europo. Tho prospect, indeed
Is very favorable for the parlies on this side,
who have been so unyielding In their views as

of ootton to Groat Britain fell off in coosequcnce
of the ponding hostilities from 650,000 boles in
1857, to about 250,000 in 1858, will begin to ex

to say nothing of the large orep in oar Southern

Important', Judicial Decision.—We would call
the particular attention of such of our readers
as are holders of mortgages, or ground rents,
to a recent decision of the Sapreme Court of
this Slate, in tho caso of tho Mutual losorance
Company vs. Roberts, reportod on the first page
of (bis day's paper. Tho effect of that decision
is to render policies of Insoranor, assigned as
collateral seonrityJ almost valueless; for it sub

Lobd Lyons, it seems, is to be the successor
of Lord Kapler at-Waahingtou, as has been al

that Lord Abercrombio was tho coming Minister
arose from the circumstance that Sir Ralph

by Lord Napier. Lord Lyons is expeoted here
in February.
