The letter sept et friend of the Bishop of Ohio, well known to him in former years, and who has been for twenty years a resident in Italy, in the prosecu tion of his profession as an artist, .kindly ten dered his parlor for the usi_of his countrymen to-day. It was indeed a novel thing in Rome, the distinctive service of the American Protes tant Episcopal Church! The tender of the worthy gentleman was not made without some risk to his immunities as a resident, and was not accepted by the Bishop, without some Idea that the argue-eyed vigilance of the polies might .be attracted by the unusual gathering on the Sab bath morn, and an arrest be put to the cervices. But it was in the heart of those here assem bled, to worship God in Rome also, In:cording to the customs of their fathers. • The associations which Clustered - around ibis spot, consecrated by the labors end sufferings and martyrdom of apostles and holy men, of whom the world was not worthyiand who court. 1 ' ted not their lives dear unto them, for the teed ' mony of the Gospel, made us feel that it must be counted a higher privilege to the minieter'of God to preach the gospel as Paul desired to do, to them "that were in Rome also," tad wo were willing to follow the beloved fattier in God, while he stood up in the'raidst of Papal Rome and delivered the message of his Divine Master, and with a clarion voice proclaimed--"le MIT rtes TOMS; let him COME unto me and drink." - Oar little congregation, numbering some six ty persons, met at the appointed Sour. The place of assembling was an "upper chamber" on the rind,. hill. Two policemen in their well known livery paced the piazza, in front of the entrance door. In full view of Us rose the massive dome of St. Peter's with the palace of the Vatican by its aide. Just below, in the Pi azza di Spagria, was the splendid monumental column erected by Pope Pius IX., to signalize ' his Pm,' of the "laiolaculate Coneertiou,"'sed thus surrounded by ;014* emblems of an apos tate church, and in the Midst of scenes cause „crated by the blood tit intiiiirs, the :Gospel of 'Jesus Christ was proclEiMia, and the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper adrohlistered by an Ameri• can Protestant Bishop, for the first time in Papal Rome. The Iter Mr. Gadsden, of South Carolina,.; with great impressiveness, read the morning services. it was not without emotion that the Bishop rose to preach. He refereed to the solemn thought', which must ever be present to his mind when he should stand up, as be did then, to proclaim the Gospel to many whose faces he had never seen before, and whom he ,abonid, nover see again.- But, when that`es . Perhaps some solitary soul might he here present, to whom the delivery of this message might bring peace and life, and in this spirit his discourse was founded on St. John vil. 87 :—"ln the last day, that great day of the (east, Jeans stood and cried, saying—"lf any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.” Those who have heard Bishop Matilde. preach, can well conceive what It is difficult to. express in language, the manner in widcli - he unfolded the single truth of this Divine message with what clearness he pointed out the univer sality of the Gospel invitation, corresponding as it did with the experienced wants and de mands of the soul—and then with what tender I affectioniteneas he directed the sinner, in all his felt misery and wretehedneve, to Jesus. The moistened eye of most of those present spoke the sympathy which he hod awakened-nd when that little company of God's professing people knelt around that simple communion table to commemorate in Rome the love of their crucified Redeemer, in the memorials of his body broken and of -his blood shed for them, they did feel, how "Close is the tie that binds Oar hearts in Christian love, The fellowship of kindred minds le like to that above." . C=COME fITTSBCRGO, Tut Boston Liberator says: "There 12 no Constitutional President of the United States, but a daring usurper of the rights and liberties of the people of the North." If you violate a law of the 'United States, Mr. Garrison, we think you will find an Executive that will make you answer for it —Boston . Post. That depends altogether upon circumstances. If, for themes, "Mr. Garrison" should bead a gang of pro-Slayary rascals to prevent the legal voters of a territory from exercising their rights at the ballot-box' he would suffer no damage at the hands of the Executive. Or if "Mr. Garrison" should cooly murder a Free State man for daring to exprees his honest opinions, theehaneee would be ten to one that, instead of being provided with a halter, the "Executive" would give him a snug birth in the Land Mee. Or if "Mr. Garrison," in his seal to make a Slave State out of a Free Territory should make up fraudulent election returns, so as to secure a Prosillavery Legislature, instead of being sent to the Penitentiary, he would moat likely be made &Purser in the Navy. Or, still more likely, if "Mr. Garrison" should fit out a fillibuster expedition against a friendly power, and be oaeght in the am, instead of be ing sent to Jail, he would be Invited to dine at the White House, while the officer who arrested, him would be cashiered or reprimanded. Or, if "Mr.„Garrison" should lake it into his head to turn Slave Trader, and be caught in the act, instead of being hong as a pirate, he would be pronounced innocent of any crime by a Dem ocratic Grand Jury, mid perhaps secure a monument for his teal in the cause of "cheap nigger's." Or, If "Mr. Garrison" should do a great many other things, in the same direction, however clearly In "violation of law," he would nave no cause to dread "Executive" severity. But if he should, perchance, give "a cup of cold water," or in any other way, help on a flying fugitive, then let him beware! The luxury Meech "vio lations" of law cannot be indulged in with Im punity I-415. Err. Jour. STEAMBOAT ACME: r.—Great Alarm at the Explosion of a Mud Valve—A Deck-hand Blown Overboard and Drowned—A Number Of Passen gers rush Coto the yawl, which tiffs over and a num ber are drowned.—The steamer F. X. Anbry, Shortly after leaving this port on Monday after noon, proceeded to Within a short distance of Bissell's Point, where a dense fog bad enveloped the river. Owing to the diffioulty attending navigation she ran upon a bar, which jarred the boat, and the valve of her mud receiver broke off, allowing a greater escape of steam. At this instant, the second engineer and a deck hand named Tully, standing on the larboard side, in a direct line with the mud receiver, fell or were blown over the side of the boat. Tully was drowned, but the engineer saved himself by clinging to a chain or rope. in a few moments the entire space between the lower depk and cabin floor was filled with steam, and the deck hands and deck passengers, supposed that the boat was on fire. The clerk, Mr. Bates, ran along the hurricane roof to the stern of the boat, and, seeing them crowding into the yawl, called out to them to desist as there was no danger, but they paid no attention to the warning. The yawl, which was suspended close to a derrick, was tipped over, by the tipping of the derrick, and nearly all precipitated into the river. Several are said to have Annk instantly, and to have been seen DO more. An old woman,. her daughter and eon, Ger mans, bound to Pekio, lll, were among the num ber tipped out of the yawl, but the young man succeeded in easing his sister. Being unable to give his mother any assistance she was droWned. ' • ' The J. B. Carson was close behind, and, we are informed, rendered great assistance in saving life. lice yawl was lowered, and picked up a number who were chilled and on the point of sinking for the last time. The name of one of the deca hands saved is James Kirby. The number lost could not be ascertained, but it is supposed not to exceed six persons. It is to be regretted that the example and voice of the officers hada° effect in staying the wild rush into the yawl. The damage to the boat Is of no moment.—St. Louis Dem.
