TUE DEMOCRATIC PLATFOILM.—John Mitchell,
in his salutatory in the Southern Citieen, an ultra
democratic journal be has recently removed to
Washington, lays down the following platform :
"First. Repeal of-all laws prohibiting-the for
eign slave trade or imposing penalties thereon.
"Second. Repeal of the law abolishing the
slave trade in the District of Colombia.
"Third. Absolute resistance to everything in
the nature of a compromisi between North and
South.
_
"Fourth. Peremptory demand for the inter
vention of Congress, President and Supreme
Court for slavery in all Territories the moment
a slaveholder brings his slaves there ; in other
words, intervention by the authorities to sustain
the law and prevent robbery. These four items
include all. Up to a certain date we are willing
to labor for their attainment. If Southerners
arouse themselves, theme can attain them all, or
else dissolve the Union."
alsaw.—The President did not send his Mes
sage to any point in the West in advance of the
mail ; and in Baltimore and Philadelphia copies
were not handed to the press until two hours
after the reading had -commenced In Congress,
and then only one copy was given to each paper,
which was printed on-both aides. to New York
Mr. Buchanan rewarded the Herald for its
wonderful recent laudation of him and his
policy, by giving it an advance copy of the toes
, sage. It was accordingly in type in the Herald-
Ofscf3 early on Monday morning, and before the
other papers received their copies, the extra
Herald. containing it entire, carefully set up A . .
corrected, was in the streets.

this co-ordinate of altitude measurable only in

The man had evidently been dead but a little
while. h was inferred that the man, while
crossing the bridge, with the strap of his carpet
bag around his Reck, stumbled and fell lie
pitched on one side of the beam and the bag the
other. The bag balanced the man, and the strap
being strong and fast, around his neck, there

him that indicated his name or home. fie ap

Tus CON7G43IO3IAL to ESOLAND.—The Bishop
of London, in his address to the Diocese, com
mented at length on the practice of private con
fession recently introduced by coma - of the Eng
lish clergy. The Bishop is of opinion that the
authority claimed by certain among his priests
to pronounce an absolution of sin is an assump
tion unwarranted by - the standards of the Eng
lish communion, and he warns his clergy against
resorting to it. lie holds, also, that while the
English symbols recognize, to a certain extent,
the right of the priest to hear the confessions of
penitent sinners. eepecially in the boor of death
or other extreme cases, there is no warrant for
t he systematic introduction of the confessional.
