DINI3a wire A Bisnor.—One of our leading
prelates not long ago invited to his hospitable
znanslon in . London, a country rector, an old
friend, from one of the remote provinces. The
simple minded gentleman came about 6 o'clock,
baring a notion that he should arrive about the
dinner hour. Soon Mier he had taken his seat,
tea was brought round. 'Well,' thought the
rector, 'ibis in bare living at any rate ; if I had
known, I would have had a beefsteak at a chop
house belore i•came; but I hardly expected that
a bishop would dine at 1 o'clock. Is it a fast
day, I wonder"' Ile drank his tee, however,
and said nothing. About 7.1 o'clock his bed
oandle was placed in his band, and he was con
ducted to his sleeping room, 'Call you this
London?' he soliloquized: 'why I should have
fared far better at Silverton; I should have had
my comfortable mutton chop and my glass of beer
at it o'clock, and I should halo been hi bed at
10, well fed and contented. But hero 1 am, half
starred In the midst of splendor—as hungry as
a hunter—almost ready to devour my blanket,
like the boa constrictor-‘4la, ha I—and where
everything looks so greed. Well, fine furniture
won't make a man fat• .' give me substantial
victuals, and you may . n the gilding.' Solilo
quizing In this fee ble 0 undressed himself,
pulling over his ears cation nightcap, 'with
a tassel on the top,' Mr ta ng Says, and crept
into bed; coiling hi comfortably ; and,
being of o forgiving to , - he soon forgot his
troubles, and sank into, first sleep as sweetly
as a obristom child whin lo! aftera while belle
begin to ring, and a seitel knock at his door re
sounds through his roam, and a . voice is heard
saying 'Dinner is on 'the table, air '2 The old
gentleman awoke beasmaiderable confusion, not
knowing whether it.was to-day or to-morrow ;
and, according to the most authentioaccount, he
appeared ehortlyafter at. the dinner table, though
in a somewhat rattled condition as relates to his
wardrobe, and mentally ins haze of uncertainty
as to the day of the week sad the meal he was
eating.— Frazer's Magazine for Noember.
' Ilir MN A ll / 1 111,—The editor of the Nashville
Goren, quotes a passage from an article on Ed
gar A. Poe, in the Edinburg Review, for April,
1858, with the followingledignant remarks
"This is refined Billingsgate, and nothing else,
and its author is a Highchurchtnan, or at least
he is the responsible man if we mistake not. We
intend no defenceof - thepoor mhtguldederesture

of the Edinburg Reticle, had more of (he scholar
and less of national prejudice, he would hare dr e oe.

graph, to a much better perpose by a mere criti

What business, we should really like to know,
has the Rev. Sydney Smith to be hangingaround
this earth, editing tile Edinburg Review, writing
"refined Billingsgate," venting his "national
prejudice," and displaying his "critical acumen"
generally at the expense of other people as dead '
as himself ? The thing is a ghastly innovation.
It is a most unearthly indignity. It Is an
infernal outrage. Flesh and blood ought
not to be expected to bear it. In the name
of the profession we thank the vigilant and
spirited editor of the Nashville Gazette for
the merited rebuke which he bas administered
to the "reverend gentleman." Let him edit Re

HOW TO MAKE A HUM IREESTST/ElLy HANDSOME.
—ln Cincinnati, the other day, a woman named
Madame Bertha Van Oriefehinn, was arrested
for false pretences. The complainant was a do
mestic, named Barbara Hammond. It appears
that Madams advertised for sale, at $2, a re
cipe which if faithfully followed up, would "make
the hondiest the handsomest." The receipt run
as follows:
"Take half a gill of hyena's blood, the yolk
of two ostrich eggs, en ounce of gold dust, and a
pearl as big as your thumb nail dissolve in vine
gar. Mix into a paste and spread-upon the face
every night before going to sleep. The effect
will be astonishing."
Barbara, not satisfied with the chattels with
which Nature had adorned her, called on Ma
dame, gave her two dollars, and received the
recipe. Bhe next set about to seek the several
ingredients, bat being unable to procure either
of the enumerated articles, except the vinegar,
she unwillingly came to the conclusion that Ma
dame was not what she ought to he, and caused
her arrest. Madame is now in jail.
FRANCA AND tan thIVIDDSTATI9.—Tho Pattie
a French paper, protests against the doctrine
that Europe is not to interfere with political af
fairs on the continent, and scouts the "monroo
doctrine." It concludes a long 'trade upon the
subject as follows.:
165
The United Staten will not affect in the world
what powerful Russia, with her army of a mil
lion of men, with her fleets, with the genions of
her Czars, and with the dicipline and, the tenac
ity of her inhabitants bee not been able to do
in Europe. They will not succeed in contesting
her legitmate abate of influence wherever she
may usefully exercise it. We do not at all in
tend to oppress them, but they must know that
Europe will not allow herself either to be ex
cluded or humilliated. it Is necessary that they
should know that we will not abandon either in
the Atlantic, the Mediterranean or the Black
sea the cause of right and of civilization.
SRAZIIIIM AT POLITICA —We heartily endorse
the following sensible remarks by the Charlton
Advertiser :
Any man of decent information who sneers at
polities, deserves to be excluded from the bene
fits of good government and free institutions.—
Bucir kind of remarks are quite common among
those who repute themselves wiser than their
neighbors; but come tolerably smart, as w e lt se

•
On Friday last tti e first rail road locomotive en

Impalpable concern, but a regular "live," puff

hundred feet west of the bridge acmes Rock

track to the engine house. Scores of our citizens
were attracted to the spot, and when the cars de
parted their elated feelings gave vent in three
rousing cheers. It wasindeed a gratifyinguight,
