The application of manure in autumn pre
supposes that it has become partially desompo.
Ltd during the summer, and that it will become
well rotted by the following spring, when need
ed by plants upon the resumption or coMmence
ment of their growth. It is thus ready for
their use, and this is one material advantage of
:ipplytog manure in hatumu. Another advantage
is, that this decomposition has reduced its 'bulk
without deteriorating its value, (if properly
carried on) rendering its transportation less ex
pensive, while at the name time, the team and
the roads are in a better condition for the work.
The summer season, too, has afforded time for
composting the stores of the barnyard with
muck and other vegetable matter, thus increas
ing largely the amount and value of both classes
of material--an Important object to the farmer.

110 A TO.IIAVII 00 0 1) Clitze.---Prof. Hereford of
University, has recently pablished a
recipe for improving and preserving cider, by
means of which the progrco of the 'lnoue and
acetic (ermeniatiore may be arrested at pleasure.
and the cider preserved in juet each a state as
may be desired. A correspondent of the Bol
ton /curl./ Days .
l'ut the now cider into Chian casks or barrels,
and allow it to ferment from one to three weeks,
aormling as the weather is cool or Worm. When
it bas attaioed to a lively fermentation add to
each gallon three fourth,, of a pound of white
sugar, and let the whole ferment again until tt
posseases nearly the brisk pleasant tufo which
it is desired should be permanent. Pour out a
quart of the cider and mil with it ono quarter of
an ounce of sulphate of lime for every gallon
the cask contains. Stir until it is intimately
=flied, and pour the emulsion into tho liquid.
Agitate the contents of the out thoroughly for
a few moments, then let it rest, that the cider
may settle. Fermentation will be arrested at
once, and wilt not be resumed. It may be
bottled In the course of a few weeks, or it may
be allowed to remain in the cult and used on
draft. If bottled, it will become a sparkling
cider—better than whak in called champagne
wine.
Profeesor Hereford of Cambridge, was the
trot to use the sulphite of lime for this purpose,
and to him is due the credit of first calling at
tention to its usefulness. It is in no respect de
leterious, as the sulphate, into Which the sul
phite is changed by the liberation of eulphur
one acid, is entirely insoluble, and remains ea the
bottom of the vessel.
The writer has cider prepared in this way
two years since, which has remained unchanged
and is now a beverage of unsurpassed excellence.
The sulphite of lime, not the sulphate, met be
used.
A Hew religious sect has recently been holding
a prolonged meeting at Concord, New Hamp
shire. They number about one hundred, and
have not yet fully decided on their name, but
are inclined to call themselves the "Orthodox
Catholic Church." Their ereed is said to bo as
follows: "They believe In community of goods.
Civil law they do not regard, and endeavor, as
far as they aro able, to separate themselves
bauxite influence. Their laws are Bible laws.
Hainan authority is weak, and, consequently,
cannot be perfect. To avoid acknowledging the
law of the land, they do not intend to • buy any
real estate, but in the spring, they will hire
farms, where all the brethren and eistere may
live together in poaceend harmony. They hold.
that, after one has only received the reviving in
fluences of the Holy Spirit,it is impossible for him,
not only to fall from grace ; but even to be tempt
ed. Absoluie perfection seems to be the ir ex
pectation. As an offshoot of the old Second
Adventists, they believe In the epeedy coming of
the Saviour. The time Is not yet revealed, but
soon will be. They Intend that, when lie comes,
be eholl find His Church ready and waiting,
apart by themselves. They respect the mar
rlsge covenant. Three apostlee, who are to
have charge of their affairs have been chosen."
A ROYAL CAl:MT.—Prince Albert has joined
the Euryains ter his first trip. The report tolls
us that the Prince {to whom Admiral Punch
I wishes all kinds of Trafillgars and Abonkire) is
"to enjoy no immunity from his royal rank."
Highly proper; the 'youngster is to be treated
like any other youngster; there is not to be the
smallest distinction between his berth and that
of the humblest cadet. However, car eyes are
travelling on, we were startled to read that, es
the Prince Joined his ship, the yards were mann
ed, o salute was fired, and a grand- luncheon
laid out for him in the slate cabin. Hence wo
conclude that when Master Dumpling, or any
other cadet, goes to sea for the and time, the
yards are slims mimed, salutes are invariably
fired, ail hands are piped on deck, and the
honors of the reception are generally wound up
by the lad'areoelking anknektation token!' with
the captain in his cabin. No wonder car Eng
lish bops are . all so eager to go to en I —Punch.

Tug Rocs IBLAND BEIDOE--A NEW PROJECT.—
The Rock Island Commercial gives the following
outline of a project which will settle all the dith
cußieS connected with the Rock Island Bridge
question :
An engineer hoe been examining the slough
between Moline and Rock bland. After a. thor
ough investigation, he has given it as his opinion
that it can he made navigable for steamboats,
at an expense not. exceeding $lOO,OOO. Ibis
plan is to construct a lock at the foot of the
dam at Moline, and place a draw in the slough.
With some little excavation of rock at the upper
end of the slough, and the construction of a
lock, no doubt is entertained but, that it can be
male navigable at all seasons of the year for
the largest boats .which float on the Mississippi.
There is no current whateact in the slough, and
if this could be effected the steamboat men
would, have no advantage superior to the one
they possessed coon before the bridge was erect
ed.

A league is believed to elle. in the Southern
States, ono of the aims of which is the augmen
tation of the supply of slave labor. It is as
serted that this League is now operating in the
Btala of Mississippi to secure the passage of a
law by the Legislature, authorizing a ayetem of
African apprenticeship—claiming that each
State has a perfect right to make such laws in
this regard as it may deem proper, and that
Congress has no right to interfere. Should they
succeed in Mississippi, the contest of course mill
at once be taken to Congress.
