Ow - taking the chair, Mr. Darlington said that
it was hardly INOMM , 7I' 'Or "aim to state the ob

an
importance. Many
of our aitizemit who take an interest in historic

propriety of establishing 'an' historical society
here, but tba events of Thursday

the subject upon the attention to peculiarly that
this-meeting, for the purpose of taking the pre

• jr. Merritt of Canada, having been called
upon made a few remarks on the close connec
tion between the early history of Canada and
of Western Pennsylvania.
Mr. Albach also referred to the rich historic
tretunwes that abound here, and Judge Brack
enridge enlarged upon this subject, relating
- some interesting incidenla of the history of this
portion of the State. He said that the history
of the men who first established particular and
now loading branches of business at Pittsburgh
would be subject of interest lie elated that
Mr. O'Hare built; the first row of brick houses
in this city, on Market Menet; that he founded
here the first Glass Works; that he undertook
- nothing which he did not amplify and extend:
He need to be likemast men of his time, fond of

'later in his life, after a brewery had been estab

time when an we-propelled galley landed at our
wharf, six months out from New Orleans. Mr.
Henry Shreve made the first improvement on
this method of navigation, by substituting the
' rope and windlass and bea ting the boat forward
liy attaching one end of the rope to a tree. 'rho
next step was thei introduction of steam. The
first steamboat voyage from New Orleans to
'Lonleville in 2fi days was considered almost a
miracle.. Other interesting remarks were made
by the Judge. .
Ex-Governor Johnston haring been called
upon, said" that he thought Western Penneylva
its had bean grossly elandered by the Philadel-
Society.' He' instanced the account of the
Whiskylcuourreetion in their last published vol
. ame, and remarked that although they doubtless
thought they were publishing the facts in that
account, they had done greet injustice to the
actors in that affair.
' In respect to the establishment by Col. O'Hara
of - the first glass works here, the Governor said
he reidimberid heating his father say that once

"A Tatfaussotat Casa is just now before the
guidon of one of our churches. A young far
mer of rinipeotabla hually and general good char
acter,
went to Californiasome years ago, leaving
a wife here. He remaining two years or more,
the wife married again. Since his return she
has applied for a divorce (rather late indeed, it
may be said). lie being, as is believed, sincere
ly pious, asks to be admitted to communing
membership in the church, although intending
to go back to California. The session think that
be should apply for a divorce, but 'he says he
now cares nothing about hie late partner in wed
lock, end will not trouble himself, but will let
her go on and obtain a divorce if she chooses,
and can do so. In this state of ' things, the ses
sion et the church is in doubt what course to
pursue."
The above was cut out of the Pittsburgh
Dia
patch of Wednesday morning, and under all the
circumetances is a most singulai• article—a man
Is en applicant for membership in a church, and
according to their own showing "is believed to
be elneerely pious," but a supposed difficulty
springs up in the minds of this session, by their
learning thaLsome private or family trouble hap
petted some years ago between the applicant and
his wife, which caused a separation between
them. No immorality is alleged against him at
all, but this is .n troublesome question for the
session of one of our churches" to settle.
Will it be any assistance to this discreet ses
sion toward the settlement of this question, to
publish, or cause to be published, a local in the
Dispatch, making public what never should be
divulgedby any member of session to any person!
And will sdilh conduct on the part of church
sessions have the tendency to win persons to, or
deter them from, making application fur mem
bership in the Church of Christ? In this-con
nection had not this session better refer all ap
plications for membership to a vote of the peo
ple at the election, and have a popular decision
on the clue/silo as to the fitness or unfitness for
membership. Pirr,
