JIONDAY MORNING, NOV„ h, 1658
The President and. Senator D 01,40•••
The hitherto harmonious and united Democ
racy, from Maine to California, will be hereafter,
or at least until the assemblage of the Charleston
Convention, divided Into two distinct, powerful
anti belligerent factions, ledrespectliely by
.PreSident Buolumen and Senator Douglas. The 1
fame of-each of these political generals are even
now marshaling for the contest. They are at
this lime getting up their protocols and their
platforms, by means of which the confiding mas
ses are to be diverted from the real cause of
ow:demi n. Douglas holds aloft the banner
of ''S atter Sovereignty," and Buchanan,
t
throng Abe Washington Union, plants himself
on the ootrine that Congress has control of the
domestic affaira of a territory, from the period
Of its settlement until its organization as a State.
Both, however, acknowledge their vasaalage to
the South, and their - unfaltering adherence to
-the cause of Slavery. Douglas is for popular
M=E=M
Buchanan for control of the territories, under
%the - same constrce•ion of the constitution-50
thatlhere is no essentill disagreement after all.
It is true( a show of difference tts to principle will
be kept up, and a vast amount of political soph
istry brought into requisition, in order to .4 icklb
the groundlingtu g ' but stripped of its tinqel and
its drapery, it is in reality merely a struggle re
- tween two pro•slavery demageguei for the su
premacy in the councils of their own party. Let
r — thls be remembered by those Free-State men
who hold their principles loosely, and who are
I!`apt to be blown about by every wind of doctrine
,1 which they may encounter. If they find them
selves captivated by the President's apparent
endorsement of old Republican sentiments, let
them remember that these views are subservient
to a most villainous interpretation of our funda
mental law by.a corrupt and .partizan tribunal,
and above all let them remember that they are
advanced by James Buchanan, who•has already
forfeited the confidence of his countrymen.
On the other baud, should the sweet-sounding
words "popular sovereignty" please their ears,
and charm their understanding, let them bear
in mind that tidy plausible doctrine is open to
the same objection which renders the President's
position as very obnoxious. This contest,
therefore, viewed in the most favorable light,
cannot be regarded as one founded on principle.
I • It is a rivalry between President Buchanan and
, • •
Renntor Douglas, for the support of the Slave
holding Stoles, to gain which either of the con
testants will not hesitate to sacrifice every inte
rest which the North may esteem as sacred. This
view fit eustrtined by our experience of the-past,
and If the friends of freedom are wise they will
profit by 'these
. dissent ions rather than be misled
by them. • _
,
The Washington Union has opened the cam
paign against Douglas, since the result of the
: Illinois election has placed that gentleman in the
field for the Presidency, with a mani feet° setting
forth the new platform. After Betting forth its
views at full length, in a ',shored article, it con
eludes with the following language:
"Thus we bars explored the source of the
- dogma of squatter sovereignly - ; and, tracing
the progress of each territory of this Union, we
have seen that dogma negatived in every act of
