Tas Boa-Mora or TALLZTILPOID.—A wonder
ful wit was Talleyrand. ills bon-mote, which
for thirty years were the delight of Frenchmen
and the rest of mankind, are marked not merely
by the brevity which is always the soul of wit,
but by subtlety of thought and delicacay of ex
pression which constitute their highest charm:
Besides this, hie keenest sarcasms had usually
a certain air of good breeding that distinguished
them, greatly to his credit, from the malignant
jests of Rogers and the rough retorts of Douglas
Jerrold. Nothitig in the way of a witty and
civil rebuke could be finer thou his reproof of a
young gentleman wbo was boasting of the ex
treme beauty of his mother apparently - implying
that it might account for the same advantage in
the person of the eon: eetait done, said the
great diplomat blandly, Monsieur rot,. pere qui
n'etail pas si biers: "It was your father, then,
who . was not handsome I" Lord Holland, in his
Foreign Remnisoences, glees another bon-mot
of Talleyrand which is not to be found in the
odd list of his clever sayings. At the time when
the celebrity of Chauteaubriand; the ',Mutat of
all Frenchmen, was rapidly on the wane, it hap
pened to be mentioned in conversation that be
was growing quite deaf, and that he complained
bitterly of that infirmity. J. comprends, said
Talleyrand, depuis:qu'on a rase de parter de lui, ii
se civil sourd "I understand: shims everybody
has ceased talking about him he believed him
self deaf!" The only ungallant remark that is
'worded among his inumerablejests is his Battey
comment on the tender regard that ho had once
-entertained for Madame de Steel: "It fact
avoir ante Atm. de Stael pour tsoncritre tout le tots
hear d'airner use bete!" But his &teat witticism,
and as happy a sarcasm as ever came from any
man, is told in Lord Brougham's Times of George
111. This has all the politeness as well as the
subtle wit that usually characterized the bon
mote of Talleyrand. Not long after his breach
of friendship with Madame de Steel that very
intellectual and extremely masculine woman
wrote her novel of Delphine, in which she enter
lied herformer friend in the character of an old
woman, while she intended all the delicate charms
of the heroine to be tokens. her own. Chancing
to meet Madame de S. soon after the publication
of the book In a fashionable assembly, be said to
her, bowing politely, "I understand, madame,
that in your last novel you and I figure disguised
asfemaks!" The retert watt certainly it stunner,
and for keen wit - snob as no other man could
hate made. But never was a wind-hag so hand
somely punctured as when he took the "Sublime"
out of an egotistical and vainglorious speech of
Mirsbeau. At some important political crisis
the great orator was diacanting in society on the
qualities which a minister required to extricate
the nation from its difficulties, namely, great.
knowledge, genius, familiarity with the upper
classes, popularity with the lower classes, the
gift of writing and speaking eloquently, all of
which qualities it was obvious enough he reckon
ed as his own. Everybody stared with admira
tion but Tallyrand, who ahnply listened atten
tively to the end, and Mete observed : "It seems
to me you have omitted one of the qualities
of this excellent man: . should he not be very
much pitted with the small-pox I" (pique di is
petit verole.) This could be no other than Mir
sheen, and the effect upon the auditors can only
be imagined.--Bostors Post.

PLANS AND TIM P1.71.1TAX8.---The following
taken from one of the spirited eesays of the
Rev. Charles Kingsley. The Philadelphia But
/din, in alluding to the paper from -which the
extract is made observes ; "certainly the Pur
itans were right in oondemning•atage licentious
beyond parallel, and certainly lie. Kingsley IS
profound and true, as well as eloquent, when he
thus defends tho Puritans."
'TUE POETRY or Till PUEITAIS..—WIiI then
no poetry in the Puritans because they wrote no
poetry? We do not mean now the unwritten
tragedy of the battle-psalm and the Charge; bat
simple Idyllic poetry and quiet home dreams,
love poetry of the heart and tho hearth, and the
beautleaof every day human life. Take the moat
common4lsce of them. Was Zetbfor-Truth
Thereabo, of Thoresby Rise in Heaping Fen, be
cause his father had thought fit to give him an
ugly and silly name, the lees of a noble lad?—
Did his name prevent him being six feet high
Were his shoulders the less- broad for it, his
cheek loss ruddy for it ? He wore his flaxen
hair the same length that .every one now wears
theirs, instead of letfing It hang half way to hie
waist in essence and curls; but was he the less
a true Viking's eon,
bold-hearted as his sea
roving ancestors, who won the tfanelagh by
Canute's side, and settled there* on Thoreeby
Rise to grow wheat and breed horses, genera
tion succeeding generation in the old roosted
grange? He carried a bible in . hb jack-boots;
but did that prevail him, as Glint road past
him with an approving smile on liaseity field,
thinking himself a. very handsome fellow, with
his moustach and imperial, and bright red oast,
and curiass well polished in spite of many a
dint, as he sate his father's great black horse
as gracefully cud firmly as any long looked and
essonced cavalier in front of him, or did it pre
vent
him thinking, too, for a moment, with a
throb of the heart, that sweet cousin Patience
far, far awaytd home, could she :but see him,
might have the same opinion of him as he had
of himself! Was he the worse for the thought ?
He was certainly not the worse for checking it
the next instant with manly shame for letting
such "carnal vanities" rise in his heart while he
was "doing the Loire work" , in the teeth of
death and hell ; but there was no poetry in him
five minutes after, as the long rapier swung
round his head redder and redder and rudder at
every sweep! We are befooled by names. Call
him Crusader instead of Roundhead, and he
seems at once (granting him Daly sincerity,
which he bad, and that of a right awful kind)
as complete a knight errant as ever watched and
prayed ere putting on his spurs, in (erased.,
Gothic chapel, beneath "storied windows richly
light." Wee there no poetry in .him, either,
half an hour afterwards, as he lay bleeding
across the corpse of hie ;silent horse, waiting
for his turn with the surgeon, and fumbled for
hie bible in his boot. and tried to tune a Psalm,
and thought of cousin Patienee and hiatatherand
mother; and they would hear at least that he
had played the man in Israel that day and re
sisted unto blood, striving against sin and the
man of ein
And was there no poetry in hint, too, as he
emu wearied along Thoreebydyke, In the quiet
autumn eve, hornet° the home of his forefathers,
and saw far off the knot of poplars riming off the
broad misty flat and the great libels tossing its
sheets of silver in the dying curds, and knew
that they stood before hiafalhers door? Who
can tell the pretty chill memories which flitted
across his brain at the eight and made him for
get that he was a wounded cripple?
Fair Patience, too, though she wu • Puritan,
yet did not her cheeks flush, her eye grow dim,
like any other girl's, aa she saw afar the red
coat, like a sliding spark of fire, coming slowly
along the straight fen bank, sad fled up stairs
into her chamber to pray, half that it might be
half that It might not be he Was there no

GAZETTE.
Tao Coss or Naomazima.—l am fully per
suaded that farmers lose more annually by neg
ligence or procrastination than would pay the
entire taxes of the State. How many farmers
neglect to keep their farms clear of burrs, or
turn their sheep Ina stalk field or to the woods,
and let them become covered with buns, and
sell the wool from 5 to 10 coats per pound less
on that account. As a wool buyer. 1 know the
number to be quite large. As this it a great
year for burrs, I would warn the farmers to
take great care in reference to this matter, and
keep their sheep in fields free from burrs, and
graze cattle on their burry fields.
Another great fault is, by neglecting to trim
their stook, by neglecting to alter a calf till it
is 2 or 3 months old, depreciates the value when
three years old about $3 per bead, 1, know, as
a stock dealer, that thousands of dollars are
lost annually by such negligence. They also
lose by not trimming their bogs and cheep in
due time.
Again by neglecting to separate their sheep.
Thousands of lambs die annually by coming in
mid-winter, yet by very little attention this all
could be remedied. ' I go to A, and his two year
old steers are worth but $lO or $l2, while the
same year hie neighbor B's are worth from $2O
tos2s. Why Is Itf A keeps common stook. he
takes no care of it, in winter he, pilesttp straw
out doors and lets the cattle run to. it- In the
summer perhaps he salts them once a month, if
it at all, while B keeps improved stook, if not
he pays his neighbor C 50 teats or $1 for each
calf, trims them in time, they have nice horse,
then he saves hay, fodder, As., to feed them in
winter, or feeds the straw if scarce of feed, as
he should do by hauling it out to them fresh
each day, then give a little corn, hay, or meal
in the spring, when the grass first comes, and
his cattle get a good start, and he is careful to
see that they have salt two or three times each
week, and all the water they need. 1 can tell
cattle that are saltedby looking at them, from
those that are not.
Again, there are thousands of acres of wheat
flown every fall that any practical farmer ought
to know from the condition and nature of the
soil, the manner and time of co wing, that will
not yield wheat worth cutting; yet he will run
over the work when he ought to know that he
would not get paid for his labor.
Every fifth farmer—l should say every fifth
man that pretends to farm—leaves his farming
implements-in the field, or wherever he finishes,
till be wants them again; then be will have to
study to know where they are. I have seen men
even leave reapers and mowers exposed to the
weather from harvest to harvest. How can
such farmers expect to prosper? These are not
fanciful talcs," but stubborn fact, and every far
mer of observation knows them to be true.
I have not only seen such thine in Ohio, but
the farther West the more of such negligence I
have observed. I have seen carriages and bug
gies purchased at high prices in Illinois and
lowa, stand In the weather from•month to month
till the ciartains were blown in strings, and the
carriage ruined, all from the want of shelter,
at a few dollars cost. While travelling three
months in the West, observing these things, I
was greatly astonished, I thought it bad enough
at home, but still worse there. Thousands of
mulch cows standing out on the prairies in all
kinds of weather, when the winds would nearly
pierce them through because they bad no abet
ter.-oAio Cultivator.
TUN Columbus (Ind.) Democrat gives a full
account of the suicide of a man in Court on
Wednesday last, at that place, The telegraph
told us of the affair, with its accustomed brevity.
Mr. William Mewherter, an old and well known
citizen, had been sued and judgment obtained
against him, but the plaintiff had not been able to
find anything to satisfy theexecution. The plain
tiff believed thot M. had property, and institu
ted suit at the Circuit Court to charge the body
of Mewherter in execution under the statute of
the State. The question was tried whether M.
had concealed property contrary to law. The
verdict was that he had in his hands, unaccount
ed for, $lO,OOO. The Court room was crowded,
and the defendant, hearing the verdict, '•took
his own life by shooting himself through the
breast. Upon the discharge of the pistol he I
sprang into the air, and fell dying upon the
Boor."
