A SICILIAN STORY OW EARLY TIRES
CHAPTER IL 'C'tnrriatutro.
At this jancture e llellerns returned In haste,
and there was a look of trouble upon his brow.
He closed the door behind him, and then turned
towards our hero.
'Altaic,' he said, evidently striving to assume
a calmness which he did not feel, 'have you any
reason to suppose that your entrance idle the
city this evening was particularly noticed.'
'Why dO you.ask V demanded the youth.
tell you' answered Beßerns. harp just
came from the inc near the Temple of Diana,
where I oreiheard a conversation between two
soldiers The'bitil just come from the Southern
gate. They Said. that a Greek vessel wait seen
upon the coast Ws morning, and thit some one
landed froth her; I also matte out, from' their
conversation, that the king had been Informed
of the fact, and that be had given orders that
every stranger who entered the city should be
watched, and intelligence of his whereabouts
conveyed to hint''
'Then I may beassured that I hare been fol
lowed,' said oar hero ; 'for I suspected it while
on my way hither.'
'And if such be the cue,' said Belem, 'we
shall hear from it.'.
'But before we wait for that we'll take some
steps of our own,' 'cried Innate. 'Some safe hi
ding.plaee most bet found.'
Alario was upon the point of speaking when
a loud knocking was beard without, and a voice
demanded entrance, in the name of the king.
'Fly ! fly cried hnthe, seizing her lover by
the arm.
'Hold,' spoke Bellerns, who became calm in
the presence of tithe necessity. 'lf he flies he
will not escape now, for oar house may be
watched upon all bands; and If he is caught in
the act of fleeing, a deeper and more deadly sus
picion may (Osten upon him.' •
Another thundering knock was heard; and
Selland started towards the door. -
'We must meet It how,' he laid, 'though I
wish I had knownyour coming bad been noticed.
Nadir, you had beater withdraw.'
'Not while- .
'Hush : In this I must be the judge. For the
good of him you love kbid you seek your own
apart men t.'
'Aye,' added the youth, leading her towards
the inner court, 'do as he bids you. I shall be
safe enough. At all events., I will !teepee again.'
Be kissed her and blessed her ; and she pass
ed from the apartment just as the host unbarr
ed and opened the outcrdoor. She stopped and
caught bold of her lover by the arm ere she left
him, and, with a heavy fear upon her heart, she
asked him to be careful.
'The thought of thee shall be inducement
enough to that end,' he replied. 'And now may
the gods be with us both.."
- is a few moments more Bellerus returned and
with him came four stout soldiers. They were
stout, hard-lookini men, whose hearts perform
ed no other office than to furnish them with ani
mal life that they might do the bidding of their
muter. Our, who wore the uniform of a lieu
tenant, advanced from his companions and ga.
zed into our hero's face.
'You entered the city this evening r he said.
Atari° hesitated for a moment, but during that
short moment his mind was made up. lie quick.
iy judged that any falsehood might only injure
him and he resolved to tell the whole troth.
Al did,' he answered.
'And you landed from a Greek vessel this

he curbed hie rising emotions.
'Are you ready to go 'V asked the otrioer.
'At nay moment.'
'Then .e have nothing' further to detain us
here.'
Muria put on his cap, and as they paned out
through the narrow passage Beller= totted an
opportunity to whisper intils ear
•Be cautious--keep a guard upon your tongue

'orlon to her to drop from your tongue. Let us
hope that the danger is not great.'
And'yet there wu • tramulonsueu in his tone
—a terror in his very breathing—that belled
the words of hope he spoke. Until this moment
the youth had not felt serious alarm ' but, as its
caught the look of horror upon the honest arti
san's face, the bolt struck to his own heart.
'The gods be with thee I' spoke Bellerns, as
they reached the porch.
But Mario made no reply. At that moment a
weighty thought was upon him, and before he
could call his back for an answer he was
hurried out into the street. The officer walked
by his side, while one of the soldiers led the
way, and the other two fell in behind. -
A variety of thoughts occupied Alario's mind
as he passed on through the narrow, dimly light
ed streets. Ile remembered • bow he bad seen
his father cut down, and bow his brother had
been butchered ; and the same bloody tyrant
who had done It had now sent for him. Is it a
wonder that, with all his bravery, the youth felt
a cold chill creeping about hie heart as ho ap
proached the lair of the remorseless monarch
CHAPTER 111.
DAILY/11e3 AND DOOM.
Pyrrha, king of Sicily, net upon hie throne
of gold and precious stones, and about him were
a few of the hardened, cruel, subservient men
whom he dared to trust. He was a middle aged
man; short and clumsy in stature; with a face
broad and brutal in its expression, and strong
ly marked by dissipation and debauchery. If
he hal ever porseesed the assurance of a brave
man, be had lost It now, and his only hopes of
safety were in the willing swords about him
and in the terror which his cruelty Inspired!
The light from three huge chandeliers of mas—
sive gold cast a strange luster over the large
apartment—the beams being here reflected from
polished mirrors; there from pillars of marble
and porphyry; and anon taking deeper hoes
from the gaudy tapestry that hung upon the
walla.
'I would like to know who this stranger can
be,' said the monarch, turning to his chamber
lain. •
.Ah—here comes the lieutenant. He shall
see.'
There was a movement among the guard at
the lower end of the chomber, and presently
en officer approached the throne, leading Alamo
by the arm.
'ls he unarmed ?' the king cried, as his eye
rested upon thy youth's tall and sinewy frame.
'He is, Biro. We found only a simple sword
upon him, and that we took from him.'
A contemptuous look overspread 'the youth's
face an he thus found a monarch so fearful ; but
when he gazed full upon the features of the ty
rant who had nick, his loved kindred, au ex
pression of deadly hate swept over hie noble
brow, and a keen fire burned in his dark eye.
'Ye gods!' grapsed the king, as he caught a
full view of the youth's face, with this deep ex
pression from the soul upon it, 'what- have we
here! Come no nearer! guard him well!
Who art thou ?'
Had the sword of death been at that moment
suspended over our hero'. head, and ready to
fall at a breath, he could not have curbed the
emotions that swelled in his soul. In all his
nature there was not one Principle or incentive
that could lead him to bow and.cringe before
one whom he so utterly despised and detested.
Had he thought of the future, be might have
spoken differently ; but he thought only of the
present and the past—be thought only of the
bloody wrongs that had been done, and heal-lowed his soot to have full sway.
"I em Mario, be answered, looking fall into
Pyrrho's face.
',Mario / What Mario art thou ?'
'Hold ,sire,' interposed the chamberlain, who
had been regarding the youth narrowly. 'Me
thinks thou stouldst know that face. He is the
son of Omens.'
'Ha! Now by the gods, I know him." cried
the king. starting up from his seat, but quickly
sinking back again. 'Art thou the son of the
patrician Omens: .

'And there you found her •'
'I heard of her there.'
'Answer me !' cried the king, in a voice of
rage. 'By the sacred crown of Jupiter, thou
hadet better bite off thine own head than an
swer me again as thou hadst done. Who is the
maiden thou bast come to seek ?'
Alaria hesitated ere he replied to this. Be
remembered the warning he had received from
Bellerus, and he began to feel that be had been
too rash in -his speech. But he had no choice
now. If he refused to answer, the king could
easily send to the dwelling of the mason, and
thus matters might be only made worse.
'She is the daughter of Bellerus,' be finally
said.
The monarch gazed Into the youth', taco for
some moments withouespeaking. There was a
loot of deadly meaning upon his hard features,
and his fingers moved nervously over his knees.
At length ho turned to his chamberlain, and
said :
'This is a curious freak of circumstance.
But the young man is like a stranger in our city
and we must provide for him—at least for awhile.
Then turning to Aerie, he added : -
'Since I have had thee brought hither against
thy will, thou shalt be provided for during the
night.'
'1 can easily providefor myself, sire.'
'Aye—but ere do not choose that thou shouldot
be put to that inconvenience. We have room
enough, and to spare ; and it will afford us true
gratification to know that thou art cared for.'
Alario could not.mistake the meaning of these
words. The look which accompanied them was'
a sufficieneikey to their Import. Bra be could
do noiltiognow to hillp himself. Ho could only
trust to circumstances as they ahould present
themselves.
The king called tate of his officers to his side
and whispered something into his ear, and then
turned once more to the youth..
'lt is waxing late' now, and we all have need
of rest,' he said; 'elo thou shalt be conducted
to a place of safety until the morrow.'
But, sire,' interposed our hero. 'why should
you keep me here to-night 1' I can be found
when you want me.'
'We are not so sure of that. But it is our
will that you remain.—llippon, you will con
duct him to a place lof rest, and report to me
when thou hart donii b.'
The man thus addressed approached our biro,
and placed his hand upon his arm.
'Como,' he said. -.
Alarlo started as be heard the tones of that
voice, fur they sounded like a knell. The word
was not spoken as steaks one who leads a guest
to a quiet chamber.
'Os with him,' op ke the king.
Alarie turned, and was led away. In au ante
room his conductor was joined by four dark. I
einister-looklog men, who had more the appear
ance of common ruffians than waiters upon a
king, and then he was seize:, by both his arms,
and hurried on through a vaulted passage to a
dimly-lighted corridor. Presently the officer,
who was filippon, the jailor, stopped at a deep
niche, where a guard was posted, and procured
a torch, by the glaring light of which he led on
once mare.
OD, through dark and Darrow passages—and
down, down, down, bog and steep stairways,
the youth wan led; and when his conductors
finally stepped, Ilippon opened a door of solid
metal, which swung out from &jagged wall, and
the prisoner was forced roughly in, and the
massive door was closed. It was shot with a
dull heavy sorted, the reverberations being
drunk up by tho solid walls as soon as they fell
upon the air—and the prisoner was left in utter
darkness. lie eloeed his new, and then opened
them again, to see if some glimmer might. not
be found to break the horrible gloom; hut it
was all in vain. Ile groped his way to the' wall
and loaned against it for support, for there was
no seat save the iloof.
The youth was not long in making up his
mind that he haden doomed to death. Ile
/
knew the character f the monarch, and that no
deed would be too it for him. Be knew, also,
how fear could 'soak the tyrant more cruel than
before, and to what cods of darkness the fear
stricken usurper ca descend.
It was a terribl thought, and fur a while
Atari' . was inclined to blame himself for what
•he had dorm : but when he came to reflect upon
the transactions of the day, he could not see
hew the present result could have been avoided.
It had flown from causes over which he could
have exercised no control without the power of
foreknowledge. Ile• thought of lanthe, and he
wondered if he should ever see her again. The
chances were against it, but be was notpeepared
to give up all hope. Be had just stalled to grope
his way around the slimy wall, whertAie heard
the sound of tootateps`without, andfreaerttly the
moving of bolts fell upon his ear. lo a few mo
ments more the door of his dungeon was open
ed, and three men entered one of them bearing
a flaming torch. They were huge fellows, clad
In sombre garbs, and each bore a naked sword.
in his hand. •
Mario recognized those getbs, for be had seen
them years before, and he knew that only the
executioners wore them ! The moment his eye
rested upon the grim visitors, he knew that his
doom had been spoken, and that the time for
execution had come ! instinctively he placed his
hand upon his hip, but there was no weapon
there. He was all unarmed, and seemingly
powerless against the gigantic ruffians. The
man who held the torch leaned it up against the
wall, where a projecting point of rock helped
support it, and then the three approached the
prisoner.
glow now,' spoke Mario.' What is your bu
siness here r'
'A foul busines.s, you'd say, if you knew It,
my master,' replied the leader of the interest
trio, in an unfeeling tone ; 'but when 'Cis done,
we'll dolt ao well, you wont know wove done it
hail.' •
.1 am to die !' the youth said, with Ms hands
clasped upon hie bosom.
.Wev'e all got to die some time, and those who
die first will get the sooner out of a very wicked
world. And since you know what's coming I
suppose you'll take it al scaly as possible.'
What a lifetime of thought and feeling was
crowded into the next moment. The three gleam
ing swords were raised; smiths doomed youth,
taw them pointing Bar ly-to his heart. There
was no hope of escape by Eight, for between
him and the door advanced the workmen of
death ! There was no hope in his own strength
of body and limb for, unarmed as he was, the
power opposed to biro was unconquerable. 8u
he leaned bank against the reeking wall,- and
shut the horrid monsters from hie eight.
