those who have every opportunity of being 'mo
vement in such affairs, that what is termed!'police
brutiniss" has never been so dull as at .present
in this city, for twenty years. Rogues, cut-
throats, thieves, shoulder-hitters,-and *'etch,"
appear to avoid the iron-City as thonih a pesti
lence were reigning here. And therein a pesti
lence here for them--The authorities keep a Tharp
eye on all the movements of this class of crea
tures, and the moment, Their debut is discovered,
arrangements are made either to compel them
to exeunt, or place them in such a position that
they cannot •tgo on with the ploy." if such
fellows have a desife to rid society of themselves,
they have chance of doing so by coming
here; if not they had better keep their distance.
GARROTING AND IiODDERT.—We learn by hand
bine sent to - this eitY, that some, unknown per
sons, on the l'lst ult., garroted G. F. Gaines, an
officer of the Pennlylvania Coal Company, at
Pittston, Pa., took the keys of the company's
vault, from his pocket, and robbed the vault of
abont $l.OOO in dollar gold pieces, quarter
eagles and mall change. They also robbed Mr.
Gaines of a valuable gold watch—a ladies' hunt
ing patent lever. A reward of $l5OO is offered
for the discovery of the thieves or their booty, -
by the residents in the vicinity, and $6O reward ,
by Mr. Gaines for the recovery of his watch.
MILITAQT.—To-clay,WB learn, the PBBoSyi-
Tonic Infantry, Capt. J. N. Negley, will parade
lat East Liberty. In the (motion the members
of the company will try their skill at marksman
ship, n beautiful medal to be presented to the
member who displays the greatest aecuraoy. In
the afternoon Capt. Negley will be presented
with--a beautiful sword, sash and epaulettes,
which were purchasmi in Philadelphia at a cost
of over one hundred dollars. The members of
his company sal the cithens of East Liberty
are the donors.
Rnsturgan M'CurJy, Esq., who fur
several years past bas discharged the ditties of
Clerk of the Orphan's Court, with entire antis
faCtion to all who bare bad business in the
,ffice, has resigned. Mr. M'Curdy's declining
health requires more active employment. We
are not informed who Mr. bl'Cardy'a successor
will be, but feel confident that a better officer
than be has proved himself cannot be found.
RAiLIIOAD Acciticar.--A freight train upon
the Ilaltimore and Ohio railroad was thrown
from the track, Tueoday morning, near Sykes
Tulle, by the removal of a rail which the work
men had incautiously taken up after one train
had passed without noticing that the flag signal
ed another behind. No damage Wan done to
the train.

PRESKNT OF A BELL.—The Lutheran congre
gation in Rochester, under the pastoral charge
Of Rev. Paulsen!, was recently presented
with a kegs and splendid bell, weighing It ion
pounds, by the rivcrmea employed on the Ohio.
The hell is now in its place in the cupola of the
new church, a monument of the generosity of the
hardy satin of toils.
