(For the Pittsburgh Gazette i
The ienglish Bill and General Jemnsp.
Messrs. Editor* ebb famous bill accOm
plished what it was intended to do, and brought Kan
sas into the Union with a pro-slavery conititution
and less than forty thousand inhaisitatits, thera would
no doubt have followed an imply and excited dis
cussion and controversy seta the original conception
of that very cunning piece of trickery.
Mr. English would, no doubt, havo claimed it as
his owl oriyino/ conception, and .upon that claim
would probably have confidently based an applica
tion for a foreign mission, at least, if not for a seat
In a pro-slavery cabinet.
Others who merely toad Mr. English, would no
doubt, when it was to longer necessary to keep their
agency In the matter secret, have boldly proclaimed
their right to the credit of first discovery. In very
truth, however, It must he confessed that great dis
coveries and wonderful inventions tut not always
conceived and perfected at once.
A rather vague conception at grit presents itself to
our mind, a kind of dreamy speculation barren of
any positive result, except perhaps leading other
minds in the same direction, and thus after some
limo, the vague speculation becomes a reality and a
printing press, a steam engine, a counterfeit note or
an electric telegraph is the multi
So it is with the English Bill. I know not who
was the original coneeirer of that famous union of
bribery and menace to tempt and drive in a desired
dixenitoti. 110( I have made the dlarorery, that the
first eoneeption was older than the present Conress,
older eroti then the last half of the nineteenth
Century.
In reading the adnarahle and very deeply interest
ing hook of Mr. a hidings, •the Exiles of Florida,"
I found at page 162 the following eltraet of a letter,
from 11..neral Jessup, dated Sept. 1837; twonty.one
years ago.
••I have promised Abraham the freedom of his
family if he more faithful to us, and I will. surely
hang him if he be not faithful."
This is certainly in the very spirit of the Kansas
Bill of Mr. English. Abraham was a negro, an
Influential man among the Ellice; and General
Jessup says to him, if you will prove faithful to toi
and be s traitor to your brother exile., I will eman
cipate your family, hut if you &trete adhere to your
poor, desolate, persecuted brethren, I will surely
hang you.
In the Kansas Bill of Mr. English the eitisens are
told "if yon will become base and trencher"us to the
tearhings of your forefather., the slgnersof the Dec
laration of Independence, and faithful to the slave
holders, you may come into the Unionl.l•PC with
forty thousand inhabitants ; bat If you dare to act
honestly and patriotically, you must wait until you
have more than double your present population."
Now li la wadies/Abet Mr. English's Bill it no
improvement either in trickery or knavery or any
utloir itic.l of baseness upon General Jesrup's letter.
ledend, there la a degree of recklessness, of utter
disregard of human lite, more especially of "nigger"
life in this famous or rather :alai.. sentence of
~
Jessup's letter, not at all ei walled in the more
sneaking trickery of Mr. En r. I bill. There Is
anent the mama Jifforence in G spirit of the two con
trivancea that there is lone the spirit of the
poor buy who Metes a pocket h iketchlef from your
pocket and that of the bra o etch, a Mill to
get hie puree. lint .till them bluer, is the same
to both rate.. Both offer ahr to treachery and a
threat to adeltty, ea It la gra tying -to knew Ak ;
Abraham is well an the peopieeof Nausea 'parasol
the bribe sod defied the threats held over them.
So that both the General end tho toady were di,-
appointml ; and the latter is, by the publication of
Mr. Giddings honk, deprived of even the poor credit
of original invention of Ibis double-faced villainy.
It is remarkable that when the Devil tempted our
Savior fie never thought of adding a threat to his
fair moilern. That mode of operation was a later
invention, whether of Jessup or some earlier genius
some (ware inquirer must determine. C.
Permit me to lay that the future history of that
noble negro Abraham la quite a desideratum. He
went from Florida to the now home west of the Mis
sissippi, with his brother exiles, but while there he
became distrustful of the good faith of our pro
slavery rulers, nod therefore urged his brethren to
Make another move, and migrated with them to
Mexico. There he was living and well, and highly
respected by his brethren in leg and 185.1. Since
then we have no notice of him. Is be still living or
dead ? If dead, when did he die and how ?
Hundreds of MT politicians and patriot., with a
thousandth part of his good sense, integrity end fidel
ity, have had their virtuee proclaimed is the obituary
columns of newspapers.; while that noble, high
minded negro may be committed to the grove with
out other accompaniments than the tears of his family
and of the sent ring ezilos.
SHALL NYE Tr.. 31 oVa CHILIMIN TO Rimer
PRAYERS °-1 have heard mothers express
doubts with regard to the propriety of teaching
their young children to repeat a form of prayer.
Some said that they should not be taught to pray
u n til they can noderstand and use their own
language; that rho duty of prayer should be
inculcated, and they left to do at voluntarily,
and in their own words. But I have thought and
practiced otherwise. I have taught my children
to say , "Now I lay me," etc., as soon as they
could speak intelligibly ; and as soon as they
are old enough. I encourage them to add a
prayer itrtheir own language.
To roe this kabit of prayer seams invaluable.
True, they may not always understand or think
what they are repeating ; yet lam inclined to
the idea that they think of it oftener than we
imagine. Often, when I have thought that my
children were saylog their prayers carelessly,
they have surprised me, by asking the moaning
of some petition.
A circumetance recently occurred in my fam
ily, which has led me to think more than usual
on the subject. My little boy, who was in his
bah year, was dangerously ill. Though affee
tionale in his disposition, he is naturally impet
uous, and has caused me considerable anxiety
in his training. Ilia disease produced alight
congestion of the brain, which (mused him to
lie In a torpor, as if asleep, a large part of the
time. He bad been consecrated to God, and
instructed in the nature of his duties to God and
his fellow-creatures. His understanding being
good, I, felt that his accountability, as a moral
being, might bays already commenced. I know
not how to part with my dear child, without
something upon which to rest my faith that God
had accepted my consecration, and taken him to
illmselL I prayed earnestly ; not for his life,
no ; I could not offer one petition for this, for I
had given up the temporal interesla and lives of
my children unreservedly into his hands, and I
could submissively say, "Tby wili be done ;"
but I prayed most earnestly that He would give
me some token on which I might root my hope
of Ida being redeemed by the blood of Christ.
One Sabbath afternoon I left him, as I thought,
to take tea In an adjoining room. Nearing him
speak, I immediately went in to attend to him.
Ile lay with his eyes closed, repeating the Lord's
Prnyer, after which he said; "Now I lay me down
to sleep," Mo., as he usually does when he gore
to bleep for the. tight. I thought he might be
asleep, and said Whim, "Henry, are you saying
your prayers I" He said, "Yes mother:" I,
asked him again, ."Did ynu think Ulna night!"
He said, "Yes ; and I willgo to sleep. God will
keep me ; won't he mother ?" I told bim, "Yee
if you coma& yourself
,ttohis care." Then be
turned his bead user "little, and seemed to sink
into a . quiet and peaceful sleep; while I sat down
by his side, and wept 'tears of joy, although I
then thought that perhaps-God was intending to
remove my dear child, and, in answer to my
prayer r had given me this token. And had be
that night slept the sleep of death, I should
think that his last prayer—
"lf I should die beige I wake,
I pray. the Lord my . soul to take,
And this I ask for Janie sake"
EZI=!I
had been heard and answered. It seemed to
rue au infiolie reward for all my labors to teach
my child to pray. God taught me also during..
tho lib:Antes of my dear boy, that religious in
struction is not forgotten. Very often, when
we thought hlm asleep, he would bre ak ,, out and

I Perhaps in the turmoil and bustle of life's
I day he may have forgotten his God, and sought
only the Imam, fame, and riches of this world;
but when night's curtain closes around him, and
be seeks his bed to rest his weary body and
spirit., this early habit will throw its influence
' around him Ile hears, as it were, hie mother's
subdued voice, as she taught him to say, "Our
Father whb art in heaven hallowed be thy
name." Perhaps he may have sunk still lower
and have been tempted to partake in scenes of
wickednese and crime; but when away from
these waist ho will retire, and remember that
his mother taught him to pray, "Lead us not
into temtatiOn; bat deliver us from evil;" and
who can say even in this dark hour, if these
influences may not be his salvation.
Perhapsyour child' after he may have become
a disciple * , will be tempted to wander into by
and forbidden paths; yet, as often as night re
turns, he cannot break away from this early
habit. Ala who can tell if God will not use
the influence of this habto secure him from
being drains away by the World, and to preserve
him in a eonstant "walk with God." '
An 'reliance of the value of this habit occurs
to me. A man was converted when between
forty and fifty years of ago. In relating his
religious'experience, he tr ays— " l had a pious
mother.' When I was a hild, she taught me
always to say the Lord's Reaper at night, and
such wee the power of this habit, that I do not
think I have ever retired at night without 1
re
peating It to this time. t was the Influence of
this habit that led me to feel the necessity of
prayer, and under the I flnences of the Holy
Spirit, resulted in my conversion, and brought
me to pray in sincerity, that the God of my
mother, who had long before entered her rest
would ease me from my sin. I trust he has
heard my prayer, and I feel that I shall bless
Him throughout eternity that He gave me a
mother who taught me to pray. "Our Father
who art in heaven.' —Brituh ifolhers Journal.

fifteen miles from the Missouri River there in a

remains' to the Gentile world a profound mys

M the head of the orgenization'is a man
named Charles B. Thompson, who *besides the
editor of a weekly newspaper called the News
paper. This paper is large, well ptinted, and
upoupolltical and general subjects is edited
with much ability.
Of this sheet one or two pages are usually de
voted to the publication of what are called "open
letters" upon religious subjects, addressed by
Charles B. Thompson, as follows :
"The Chief Apostolic Pastor and Evangeliesl

and Travelling Presbyters of the Ecclesiastical

and Members of the Conjeprezion, scattered

These letters are all dated at ••the tower of the

comprehensible cant, being made up of passa

Prom what we arc able to learn from these
