Com. vs. John Hood and Wm. Sloan, watch
men; indicted for assault and battery, on oath
of ' , Robert Campbell. The prosecutor alleged
that en the night of , the 18th of October, the
watchmen were arretiling a man named John
lively, and were abusing him outrageously; the
protmoutor requested - them to desist, and he
would twist the officers. When the crowd ar ,
rived et the Mayor's Office, defendants arrested
Campbell; he wu plieed in the tombs and - .next
day lined $lO and costs. Verdict guilty. Mo
tion for a new trial. "
Com. ye. John Smith; indictment assault and
bitte[7, on oath of Andrew Gordon. Detend
ant was convicted a few days since of similar
eharge, in attacking a young lady (Miss Jane
Thompson) on Sandusky street, Allegheny eity.
In this case, the proiecutor le defendants broth

that, in June last, quilth being in the hands of
an officer. in Allegheny city, in a Mate of intox
ication, Gordan proposed to take him home.—
While proieeding across the Common, Andrew
Morris, a trompanion,. persuaded him to go a
fishing; Smith became turbulent again, on the
railroad, near t h e - (altar , depot, and Gordon in
sisted he should go home; Smith drew a knife
and cut Gordon on the head and in the

a people calls for one public acknowledgment,
and oar grateful praise. The pest and the pres
ent are crowded with His blessings. Nothing

and religious liberty upon which our Govern

of violence is unheard within our - borders.
- While all enjoy perfect freedom of opinion, the
mill influences of our free institutions, and
the mild spirit of oar holy , religion, are more
and more uniting us in one brotherhood. Our
educational inithutit ns are diffueing intelligence
among the' masses of oaf citizens, inducing a
higher appreciation of their privileges, and
deeper. , sense of their obligations. Though in
some lonlities the pestilence has prevailed, our
country at' large has enjoyed. unusual health,

necessaries and the comforts of life. Our in

le conformity with the expressed wishes of many
my fellow citizens; I, William F. Packer, Governor
