To sire our readers a clear understanding of the case, we abaft briefly re.capitulate some matters which =tarred some months ago. It willte remembered that last winter a negro slave was run off from Brandenburg by a true negro who residesin Indians. The latter had been engaged in this nefarious practice for some time, sod circumstances] transpired whiab led to the discovery mai' white fatally named 'Bell, who have a farm opposite Brandenburg, had been aiding and abetting it. In March last one of the lone of Bell was caught in Brandenburg •and arrested, and subsequently the father was by stratagem, iodated to go to the river one night and he was then also arrested by a posse of Kentuckians and taken aortae. - The two Bells were breught before the county judgeon aoharge of runningroff Degrees, and in default of giving ball each in $5OOO, for their appearance alb. -aironit court were committed to Ail. The_ next circuit eoutt held the ease was continued to a subsequent term. Whether the continuance was obtained oe applioation of the Commonwealth or of defendants we know not. Last simmer; Horace Bell, who, it is stated, had been to Nicaragua, returned. In July last a hile 'a barbecue wu held at flainettsville which was attended by the jailor and most of the cid. lens of Brandenburg, Horace accompanied by two men, armed to the teeth, tressed in a skiff to Brandenburg, proceeded to the jail which had been left in charge of the jailor's wife and a young man, and demanded the release of hilt father and brother. The young man fled at the 1 1 appearance of a six shooter In Horace's hand, ' and the jailor's wife (who by the way is related to the Bells, and wu not gagged by the party as was reported,) surrendered the keys. The • party then released the father and his eon and took them back in their skiff to Indiana. Boy- UM citizens of Braabenbarg got wind of it, and a number of shots were exchanged between them and the party crotaing the river, but no one was hurt. The citizen' of Brandenburg thereupon offered a reward of $5OO, for the delivery of Horace Bell to the jailor of that county. These are the ciroumatances in brief out of which grew the affair on Saturday. -w Horace Bell haa been attending the fair at New Albany, and it, it stated was In this city ' one day last week. He bee been in the habit of bragging of his prowess, saying that no Kentuck , ian could take him. The officers here heard of his preeence in Neir Albany, and no doubt made efforts to capture him, On Saturday whtio 'Horace was walking on Melo street in NeeAlbany, (most of the (ill. seas being at the fair oottis) five men who ' are reported to have be 'officers from this oily, %belief we Jo not know tat th ey were, rushed out of a grocery, eeirett old of hint, end-car ried him to the ferryboat., which it is alleged ) was waiting to bring tit in across Its was lodged in'thajail la this el y, and a felony war rant sworn out against hi¢ by the chief pollee. At a quarter before 12 o'clock on Saturday night, Mr. Wolfe, Bell's attorney, called at the jail and procured his (B:0 signature petition ing Judge Meir to ivour a writ of habeas carpus, directed to the jailor, and chief of police, ee -1 flaking them to Ming Bell before him-on Mon imy morning. Mr. Wolfe, after.-obtaining the signature; left for the Judge's residence, but, before he rniild return, Officer Biigh came to the jail tool, ,iie prisoner off, and we understand '.started with him for Brandenburg, accompanied by the chief and Officer MerrilL When Mr. Wolfe renamed, ho found Bell gone. .Several citizens of New Albany were here and of course were informed of it. Tao was the last of !kin this city.. . At New Albany on Saturday evening, when the affair of Be forcible capture became known, a tremendous excitement was caused.— The fire bells were rung, and a large meeting was held. The ferrymen, who it is supposed was privy to the affair, was arrested. Gover nor Willard was in the pity, sod our informant states that he promised to issue a requisition to the Governor of Kentucky for the men who cap `lured Bell. Expreeses were sent to-Corydon to advise the people of the affair, and it is believed that parties -etarted off from New Albany to rescae the prisoner from' the officers. P.; B. Since the above, we leara• that a party of about a hundred at New Albany had charter ed the ferryboat Empire, and left on her about 2 e,elook yesterday for Brandenburg, with the avowed purpose of rescuing Bell. It is under stood that an uprose was eent.from here to Brandenburg to plsoe the oillzeus on their guard against this hostile expedition. We are also enabled to state that the ferry men had - no agency whatever in securing Bell. bat that after he had boon Idea aboard, hle oepturers compelled : the ferrymen vi et arm& to oast the boat from her mootiage.—Lou. Jour. ' FAIL Piertrax.—October Butter.—We don't like to tell too many secrets; but when we say that October butter, rightly , made, is the very best for' winter use ' of the whole season, we know what we are talking about. ' We say "rightly made." And that is not simply in eetting-the milk, skimming off theeream, churn ing and working it, and then'packing it lowa, bat bat depends also on keeping -the eve properly while yielding her milk for the purpose. Boma h*o.a notion that moving grounds should nev eibe fall pastured. -Bach may be, or may not be. We esadme, however, that, after the hay ' carried off and the meadow has laid open to a after showers of the season, provided it has think, doge bottom, and not been top-dressed lines haying, and tho grass bog again got a good blocky growth, none so good use can be made Of that grass, or. the ground it grows on, as to feed it off with some sort of farm stock, which Will be ready to have .done, if at all, by , the first of October. Then, if you have a 10i . .0f butler dairy cows, tarn them in. Their milk is then licher in cream than earlier 'n the season, although the quantity of milk is I . The grass is fresh, clean, solid, and rich. Tarn them in after the frost is off the grass in, the morning, and not before. If it is late in morning be fore the frost melte or crraporatee, give the cows s slip of hay in the stables or she s before they go ont, and keep them in all night, with a bite of i hay before them. Don't leave the in the field, for they will not eat in a frosty night, and their milk will secrete less in the chilly air than when under shelter. Then your cows }ire in capital health and condition; their setnntions of milk uniform, and the quality of the best; and such milk must make good butter; if properly treat ed afterwards. 1 Bo in November, and . through it, you make an abundance of butter. As the season advances, give them pumpkins, good cured loornstalks, or scything nutritious and milkiielding. When December comes, dry , them off, if they calved early in the spring. A good dairy cow should go dry about three months of the year, for she will bring you a better calf and give more and better milk, on the average, for nr being over worked.—American Agriculturist. . Taw POTATO Dialase.—According to a cor respondent of the National Intelligence, the po• tato &settee was known in Ireland nearly one hundred and twenty years ego, the first record of it being in 1789 and 1740. The principal cause of destruction, - however, at that time, was severe frost. So total was the failure of the crop, that no lase than 800,000 persons died in Consequence of resulting famine. The next memorable potato blight in Ireland was in 1765, and there were 'partial failures In 1770, 1779 and 1784. That of 1795 Wag not confined to Ireland, but extended all over Europe, sod even to America. In 1800-the potato partially failed in Ireland, and the failure was characterized by the peculiar withering of the haulm which has been so, marked In the consequent attacks of the diseave. The year 1801, 1807, 1809, 1811, 1812 and 1816 were all bad years for the potato crop In Ireland, and .during 'the lest year (1816) as bad in England as in Ireland. in Ireland al most every second succeeding year sines 1816 has been a failure in the potato crop. In 1840 the potato disease prevailed to such an extent in Germany that the total extinction of the es culent was threatened. The year 1848 was a very bad ymir for the potato in America, though not very unfavorable in Ireland; but it wait the commencement of the. great blight which pre- Veiled for the next five or six years. The year 1848 the crop almost_ontirely failed, and in 1849 and 1800 the potato failure was very ex tensive and intense. It seems to have reached Salaam, however, in 1848, and it has since then gradually declined. The severe frosts of 1855 seemed to have beneficially changed the Sabili. ty of potatoes to disease, and the root has again assumed a healthy character' and regained Its natural flavor. • Tug following is s good sketch of an Arkan sas judge : The Indoperidineo circuit court, Arkensas, which lately closed itsuitting, after a session of fonr weeks, was adjourned on the 29th, ontof regard to the Masonic celchrstiori at Ttaissrillo on that day. Tile editor of the BeMance, Mr. Shelby Ken nard, took ottoman to remark in a subaequent number of his paper, that thi' unfinished elate of business on the docket, and the little pro n.. made, hardly it:unified the Judge, Hon. Wm. C. Elevens, in adjourning 04 that occasion. The Judge r bighly offended at the remark made armed himself, and. entering Shell's ofEoe, de manded peremptorily that the statements shoold be either modified ore retraction made, neither of which could Kennard consent to do, as he alleged that the docket bore him out in his statements. The Judge retired to the front of the drum and attempted to draw a pistol, at the same limo using high and offensive language to Kennard, boring him to come out, stating that he would "bore him through if be showed his face!. Kennard stated his readiness to meet the Judge with any arms and on any terms, if he could be allowed to leave his office and arm him self. At this stage penning had collected and the beligereut Judge was • induced to retire. Kennard has since published the docket in hie justitleation. • Further difficulty,is apprehended when the labors of the -circuit close. Kennard is a lawyer also.
