partment of trade has been very active, and
even during election week more goods were sold

Inthis city the long continued drought and
consequent lowness of water in our rivers, has
very seriously interfered with the business that
would have otherwise been done. As it is, every
'thing is exceedingly dull. Several of our largo
,iren houses are shipping their wares on board
'isteamers, trusting to a speedy rise. We are of
Ithe opinion that, a healthy reaction will take
, Iplace soon in all departments of our trade: that
1 there has not been as much business done in
the last six Months as the teal wants of the
community wtarld warrant, and that from the
extreme point of depression we may look for a

We think ate prospect of a tariff, which is now
good, provided we secure a reliable majority in

within the next two years, if that prospect be
realized, Pennsylvania will be in a state of high 1

1 A FINANOIALSPECULATION.—The Philadelphia
Aims is of the opinion that the recent extraor
dinary advance in State Fives was a trick to
fleece the Slate. IL says:
1 "There is something very remarkable in the
sudden rise of State Fives on Friday last, and it
will not be amiss, if the Legislature, when it
meets, shall inquire whether or not a itapendoun
fraud was committed on the treasury on that
occasion. Mr. Megraw, Ma State Treasurer, to
whom is committed the business of investing on
account of the Sinking Fund, was in town, and
the story is, that his favorites had been in the
market for some days before buying up the
Bonds at 91, 91A and 92. It is not difficult to
see that a splendid speculation could be made
here, and if the purchases of Friday last, at 95
to 98, were made for account of the Treasury,
the evidences of collusion are sufficiently sitting
to warrant his impeachment immediately. We
have always known the present Treasure r of our 1
State for a very sharp practitioner in financial '
speculations, but we were hardly prepared for a
stroke so bold as that which seems to have been 1
committed last week. We invite the attention ,
of the new members of the Legislature to the 1
rumors in circulation in regard to this matter,
and trust that the raising of a committee of in
quiry may be among the first acts of the
setoff on."

shawl were found on Monday. on the banks of

a young woman, who, it is believed, committed
suicide by drowning herself in the canal.• , To

addressed to "Mrs. Maria Johnson, Tecumseh.
Mich." In the letter the wrieer,'who signs her
self Elks Williams, addresses her sister, stating
that she liedfrom home about. a year eince at
the solicitation of a young man, who represent
ed himself as a traveling dentist from Detroit,
and with whom she fell in love. She canto to
this city, where be took her to a house of ill
fame, acoomplished her ruin and then left her.
Shc went to Baffalo and spent the winter, lead
ing en abandoned life. In the spring she went
to Cleveland, and - soon after engaged as a cook
on a canal hoot, where she was brutally used by
the men. Driven to despair, she resolved/vend
her life. This Is the substance of the letter, sad
{here isllttle doubt that it is genuine, and that
"one more unfortunate" has "gone to her
death."
