Now, Messrs. Editors, I send this communication
to you, heeanse yoursl, a central and far-reaching
Journal, one that circulates alike among all denomi
nations of Christians. To them this' sketch of what
their brethren in Philadelphia are doing may lie
interesting: and I think I may reasonably indulge
the hope that other papers throughout the country,
both religious and politipai; will copy it, not for any
merit It possesses as a literary production, but for
the example It eels forth. It is difficult to convey a
clear idea of such a work as that described; but the
reader will please take this as the best I could do.
While I gazed upon the precious work that it was my

position. The chief difference is, that lam
uow in sight of Pond's Bay, and have not the
dreaded middle toe to circumvent. We reached
'Cape York on the 2Gth ofJune, which is very ear

a warm one, but what is wanting in a succession
of strong winds to remove the ice. Although
round Cope Turk this day month, we have atm
.oemied In getting, then far today.
It is quite impossible to say what may be the
state of Barrow Strait a month, or even a fort

hear how generously the whaling captains have
behaved towards us ' supplying us with potatoes,
hoer, stores, &c., and even was fresh beef.
We have not been able to communicate with
many of them, owing to our hurry to steam on
ward, but the fault has not been theirs that we
have not received still larger supplies. I am
happy to say the Fox Is as sound and wellequip
ped as when eke left England, and we are all in
excellent health. Stich extra supplies as may
he necessary should our absence be prolonged
beyond next year I intend to lake on board at
Beechy Island, WI a measure of precaution. hot
it is not my intention (as you may recollect I
stated' at the onset) to expose my companions to
the risk of being compelled to plea a third Win

without it. I like them all ; they are up to their
work, and deserving of my entire confidenfe.• •
Near Cape Hershurgh we communicated with
the, natives who were at l'ort Dundee, at the
time of the Phimvix's visit. The old chief re

"Arrived at the election ground, there was a
sight worth seeing. Apple brandy ruled. There
were about as many women as men on the
ground. This is a peculiar feature in North
Carolina gatherings—the somen nearly all at
tend, and it results benefieially sometimes. I
once now a fellow get into &fight at one of those
elections, while hts wife was along with him.
The front yard of the loggcry bad been gravel
led with very coarse gravel Our hero Dulied.off
his shirt and pitched in, but was aeon made to
bite the gravel. Hero No. 2 jumped on him,
but was no sooner on than off, for oar brat nam
ed hero's wife gathered a hoop pole and such a
lamming as hero No. 2 got it has not been my
fortune to see since. All hands Mood off and
saw it well done. Hero No. I was a eight. Im
agine a man's back full of coarse gravel—goug

In approaching the election ground, young
men and women could be aeon Bitting on loge
in the weeds, eating ginger cakes and drinking
cider and brandy. Heap of load to the acre
there. One fellow Jumped out of a shanty there
where they kept their apple brandy, and swore
that ho could whip the man that had anything
against him. Everybody seemed too drunk to
take much notice of him. Two fellows got to
scuttling on a large scaffold, and down it came'
conning a general row. Some were knocked
down by the fallinpof the scaffold and, Bopp°.
