Although I could not have been more than eight years of age, 1 shall never for get the spectacle. It happened in this wi no Close by the school house—a very unpreten ding edifice it was—ran a deep and rapid river. Across it had been thrown a high wooden bridge the hand-railing of which time and the Winds and the weather had entirely destroyed The land on the opposite sides of the stream was owned by different persons and farmed by them respectively. One bright summer day—l re member it OS it were yesterday—the hour of noon had arrived, and a frolicsome, fun-seecing troop of school-boys were let loose for an hour's recreation. All at once the bellowing and roaring of two bulls that had broken out of their enclosure on each side of the river attracted our attention.. The animals were not yet in eight of each oth er, but were approaching along the highway at a rate of speed which would cause them Lo meet near the centre of the high bridge which I hare described, and beneath which, at some thirty feet, rar the river, between steep banks. The more daring of us gathered near the bridge Aiaibg it, to see the anticipated fight. We were not disappointed. Nearer and nearer approached the prond, pawing combatants. tiashan never produced two brutes of fiercer aspect. They lashed their sides with their tails, they tore the ground with their feet. Occasionally they kneel ed down, trying to gore the earth with their horns. And as yet they were concealed, each from the other, by the ascent to the bridge at either end. Presently, as they simultaneously aseendml the respective abutments, they came full in eight of each other. The roar was mu tual and actually tremendous. Every urchin of us sprang into the fields, and ran. Finding however, that we were not pursued, we hasti ly retraced our steps. There they were, quite as sensibly employed as some of their human imitators. Front to front their horns lucked, every 'Janie strained. they were lighting to only bolls - can fight. Ti seemed an even match. Now one would press back his opponent a few paces, and presently you would hear quick sharp snort steps, and his adversary would be pressed back in return. The struggling-was hard, was long. was savage. For a while neither obtained an advantage. hitherto they hal been pushing each other lengthwise of the bridge; suddenly they began to wheel, and in a moment were facing each other crosswise. They were at right angles with the length of the old bridge, which shook - , and creaked. and reeked again with their tram pling and their terrible strife. II was the work a . single moment ; one of the beasts—l could not tell which °neer them, however made it des perate plunge forward and press antagonist neck, hack, buck, fill there , but `other atop of the plank behind hie, d nothing' Th. nlillllClit 1 , 41.1 one of intense hereof. to us jurentie spectators. Back, back, he retro.ted, with his head in the same pugnacious attitude as when tu combat—back—beck still another step back—and over he too wont on the oppo site side of the bridge, performing just us many and as-ludicrous somerse.s as his adversary bad done a minute before. Tux her. Dr. J. T. Peck who was recently transferred from the New York Conference of the Niethodtst Episcopal Church, to that of Cal ifornia, has made a "lour of observation" in his new field, and has thus acquired more valu able information of the religios' state of the church with which he is associated than he could have done by many years residence in San Francisco. This tour was undertaken nt the request of the Bishops of the nhnrch, and the Doctor describes the results of hie Investi gation as very gratifying. lie has traveled many hundred miles by steamboats, care, stage, and any kind of conveyance that offered. He was absent from San Francisco nine weeks, du. ring which he attended nix camp meetings, preached from four to eight times at each. Up to the meeting of the conference, September pith, he bad preached forty-six sermon', thirty-one of them in the open nil. He writes that he has "enjoyed these tours and labors, exceedingly," that be has with the most joyful welcome everywhere," that he is “eurprised at the Mast extent bf the splendid agricultural districts of ;he state, at the progress of improvement, the promptness of vegetation, the rapidity with which the fruits of various kinds are brought to perfection from the seed, the perfect aInLIBIICO of everything desirable for the comfort of the peo ple, the industrial enterprise of Californians, on the ranches, in the mines, and in commerce; but especially gratified at the amount of la bor which has been done by the religions pio neers in planting, and training the Christian churches." PROTEMON AND FOREIGN TRADC,-11 in a ta vern° assertion among free traders that protec tion will cripple and destroy the foreign trade of a country. Were this statement correct, it would be of a secondary importance to a pros perous domestio trade, which in this country is ofqiie times the value of the foreign. But facts !Mow that this assertion is but one other free trade! fallacy. France, by protecting her home manufactures, has increased her commerce to a remarkable extent. In the year 1847 the Im ports of. France were $255,000,000 and the ex ports E 205,000,000. In 18511, the Imports had increased to $431,000,000 and the experts to $ 4 33,000,000, of which $311,000,000 consisted of the manufactures and produce of France.- 80; too, is it with the bighlyprotected Belgium, her exports having grown from $186,000,0001n 182810 $375,000,000 in 1860. Set again, is it with the still morehighly protected Sweden, her exports having been $13,1810,000 in 1831 and $34,000,000 In 1863. So, too, with the almost prohibitive Spain, the amount of exports in 1827 having been but $12.009,000, whereas, they were $100,000,000 in 1852.—Neto Orleans Dna ilcuas ItozzAnis, for come years one of the maids of honor of the Queen of Greece, and so oonepicious for her extraordinary beauty as lobe come one of the most attractive Hones at Athens, and to cause ajust reimation among the l'aglleh , tourbue visiting the city of Minerva, le the. daughter of the Bullet hero, Marco Box:aria, whose name 'leo familiar through.lialleck's no. ble poem. STONE Ilousics.—A letter from Florence in the (111 fit (. 4 Providence Journal, makes especial mention of tv? V the solidity of Florentine houses. They are built of stone, and last for centuries. A con ! fiagration would be next to impossible. The city could hardly be destroyed by' fire. In few houses is, there sufficient combustible mate= rial to make a blaze groat enough to communi cate to the adjoining house. The ceiling of the first story is almost universally a brick arch.— These arches, in some houses, are also carried through all the upper stories. The floors are in every case of brick, ground to different degrees of smoothness, or of cement, handsomely painted in Imitation of marble. Wherever it can be done, plaster is substituted for wood, as in the caning of doors and windows, or other kinds of ornament. What., by our mechanics, is techni cally called "furring," is unknown there. Whoever goes to Italy, as many do, expecting to find the principal part of the buildings of marble, will be disappointed. Marble struc tures form the rare exception instead of the rule. Full ninety per cent. of the buildings of Italy, have stuccoed or plastered exterior walls. This is true of Naples, Rome and Florence, and It is of Munich, Dreittlen and Berlin. No coun try of Europe, with the exception of France, is so well supplied with stone of various kinds for exterior construction of the United States of North America. It is on the inside and not upon the outside of churches and palaces that one sees the most liberal expenditure in mosaic pavements and panelings, In marble columns and entablatures, and alter decorations. Vilna is no doubt that more marble has already been used in America In exterior construction than In Italy. ............. Oo DZATLI OP MA VHDCOILDATO, Tns GREEK STATES SIAN.—Advices of recent date from Greece ? an uounce the death of Prince alavrocordato, a patroit Greek, who has been prominent in the affair of hie country for many years, and whose name has been familiar to our Senders through cotemporary literature—particularly the adven tures of Lord Byron, as related by himself, by Br. Kennedy, Moore, Trelawney, and others. Ile was engaged in the Greek Rovolution, and organised .a provisional government for Wes tern Greece. He 'fortified Missoloughl against Kursidd Pasha'e army, and withstood several Turkish attacks: It wu here that Bouaris fell fighting, and Byron died from the malaria of the marshes of the low-lying plain. He was in a great measure the creator of the Greek Con stitution, and was the first President under it. After Greece was transformed into a kingdom, Mavrocordato continued prominent, and wu once minister to England. With Murocordluo, dies another link which conneote um with the age of Byron and Shelley, when Greece and Greek litereture, tours, his tory and poetry were the height of the fashion. Tun Administrationists al Washington are en deavoring to make It appear, that Penosylva nia'a tariff whim mimed the recent overthrow of the friends of Mr. Buchanan in that State.— Col. Forney disposes of this clumsy story thus: The question of protection has deeply biter toted our people, and there is an earnest feeling on the subject; buthow did that of itself defeat the Administration candidates! They were vociferous throughout the whole eartvasein their expressions of devotion to the doctrine of pro tection, and boldly-claimed that they were the best tariff candidates before the people—that they could and would obtain more desirable legislation for Pennsylvania interests than their' opponents. Nay, more; a leading argument urged against the People's Party was based up on the false assertion that their nominee, Mr. Read, had signed aietter commending Geo. M. Dallas for hie vote in favor of the tariff of 154 ti. So fit.. as profeesionecould go, there never were a set of men more thoroughly committed to the doctrine of prolirtion than (he Adminiatra non candidate& Tax Agricultural Bureau of the Patent Office has received o letter from Mons..l. de Nottbeck the Acting-Consultate-General of Russia for the United States, dated at New York, October 9th, in which that gentleman sap, that wishing to 'send to several of the Russian Agricultural and . Horticultural Societies samples of wheat, corn, and other seeds of American growth, he requests that he may have a few packages of each kind to be distributed among them. In exchange he will invite the. Societies of Russia to forward for the Patent Office, each varieties of gralti as are peculiar to Russia. Theollieers of the Patent Office replied that they would comply with the request, and are now making arrangements to secure seed of the several varieties of such grain as are to be found in this country.
