own partisans. They deadline in the severest
terms the , cosdnet of the Americans_ at the late
Munielpal election in Baltimore, In the nineteen
wards, in which thstparry is in power, yet have
not • word to say In condemnation of their own
Mende in the eighth ward of that city, which
polled double es many voles in favor of the
democratic candidates as there were legal voters
Is the ward. In Philadelphia, in the First Con
gressional district, It is evident that Florence,
the Lecompton member elect, was successful by
means of the grossest frauds, yet the Penneydva
nism odes out lustily against any investigation
of his election. It is true, previous to the Sec
ond Tuesday of October, this journal warned
the - people to bewkre of illegal voting, and called
on them to punish any . violation - of the sane
- tity of the ballot-box. Since the frauds, how
ever, have proved to be in favor of its own par
tisans, it has cot a word to say in . oppolition to
Shim On the contrary it denounces every
ar .. iirt which is made to expose them to the public.
In New York, recently, the term "working demo
that" was defined to be a "democrat who polls
ilielargest number of votes with the fewest
Voters." -This-definition seems to be accepted
Dy the party throughout the whole country, nod
' its journals only censure illegal voting when it
is done by their political opponents. They
egine that thtedemodate alone have a monopoly

lit their party and tie candidates. .The people
should know Ithat these complaints amount to,
and when they hear locofecos cry out against
unfair voting they may set it down that they
hive not been permitted to cheat u much an
they intended in the distort. If there has been
soy frauds perpetrated, 'our word for it, they
' - emanated from the democratic Bide of the house,
aud.the noise - ebb* they have made, has been
rained on the old "atop thief' plan, in order to
ditirt suspicion from themselves.
Tut GUMMI pots.—ln awarding honors to
those who contributed to the People's victory in
this Sege, the Germans of Pennsylvania should
natl. forgotten. They moved almoet in a solid
phalanx inhehalf of the great prinoiplea of pro
oration to American Industry, and Freedom in
`our tatritories. The Philadelphia Enquirer, of
Saiurday tut, says:
"We have reason to believe that a very lirge
proportion of the German citizens of Phibidet
- phis voted the people's Ticket at the recent elec
tion.• Some of our friends believe that at least
• two•thirds of them pursued thin course. 'They
had an independent organization, held meetings
of their own, were addressed by their own ore
' tore, and paid their own expenses. The move
ment throughout was spontaneous and wee from
conviction. Many of them ere engaged in the
manufacturing eetablishments of Philadelphia,
' naturally enough, desire to obtain wages calcu
lated to enable them to maintain their families
with some degree of oomfort. They also felt
keenly in relation to Letomptou, and were
shocked at the effort of the National Adminia
tratton to force slavery upon a free people.
• Their aid at the ballot-boxes was truly valuable,
4 'ari d contributed very materially to bring about
4 .1 'result that has afforded such gratification
everywhere throughout the country. We take
pleasure in acknowledging this arsietance, cape
chilly as it was given in a spirit and manner so
generous and unottentatiocue",
The German raters, finding that they bad a
great'etake in the measures contended , for by
the People's party, voted in accordance with

As investigation is going on into the frauds
of the New York city government, the resube of
which are rather astonishing, even to the patient
tax payers of that city. The Investigation die
closets not only ehameful instances of individual
defalcation and official robbery, but a system of
looseness and disorder and want of accountabil
ity, running through all the departments of the
municipal government. Money is received and
not paid into the treasury, money is taken out
and not accounted for, even the columns of fig
ures are not added correctly, and the books are
made to balance by forcedentries. Thew, frauds
are estimated by hundreds of thousands of
dollars.

Importance, and its steady and rapid increase
promises to place it ere long at the head of its

California, in a few years, will produce wools

ties competent to judge that the clip of the
present year alone will, reach a million and a
