ua CONIZZBIO2IAL tv THZ CHURCH or ERG
LAND.—A very deep feeling of dissatisfaction
at present pervades the minds of the people in
England in consequence of the disclosures
made of certain practices - by elergymen of the
Church of England, .who it Is clearly proved
have introduced the, worst practices of the tto
mish confessional into that church. Some time
ego the Bishop of London prOmptly removed
from his othoe the Rev. Mr. Poole for conduct
of this kind, without any public trial. Other
same have also been brought to the notice of va
rious Bishops, the most recent being that of the
Rev. Mr. West, officiating In the diocese of the
Bishop of Oxford, of a place called Boyne Hill.
The R d gentleman was Put on trial, and
acquitted. The fact that he . bad required his
parishioners to confees to him,:and that he had
put the most revolting qiielltions to females at
the confessional, wasadmitted by himself._ The
Morning Star, after quoting this Reverend gen,
tlemsn's own words, makes the following com
ments:
The Rev. Mr. West is an honest and unsophis
ticated individual. — " Tha t -was the question I
put," ho continued in agaih : snsweriag counsel.
Be is familiar with prittink 'such questions. It
appears to be his custom, and he does not deny
it. Nay, as this is the same Mr. West whd retu
ned to read a privy council prayer because it
reached him through s printer, not through a
Bishop, we cannot doubt that be thus performs
his duty with the greatest scrupulosity and en
tirely because he is of opinion that the laws of
the Church require him so to act. But here we
have auricular confession in Its most obnoxious
and revolting form ; and, conducted as it was in
the privacy of a bedroom, ins form which, we
believe, no Bishop of the Church of Rome its.
self would fora moment tolerate in the days in
which we live.
Nor, depend upon it, will the pimple of Eng
land. As we have before obeorved, the Estab
lished Church is rho servant of the public, and
the muter wilinot always allow the curates to
go about from house to hum requiting our
wives end daughters to reveal themselves as
the women of Boyne Hill was asked to do. The
curates may, indeed, persist in claiming the
power to elicit confessions of ouch a nature ;but
it will end in an everlasting rupture between the
Church and the people. Buch proceedings are
no more congenial to the English mind than are
now the wild otrepriog of the forest to the Leg
fish soil; -and we only assert a fact when we
declare that every exertion to .reconoile the
country to the practices wo uplink of will be at
tended by the mouperfect failure.
And the point churchman have seriously to
outsider is this, that it ion& within the walls of
4rkere
come voluntary establishing the confes
sional is proved to cow, hoe; a &lurch which
tv bound hand and foot to , i rerlin t ent and
which the ParTirneut can oh 'or even destroy
se the public vole* pay d " Those, indeed
who are unfriendly to the ep patterns of re
ligion might, be disposed td er no word of
warning, hilt rather to rejoice the prospect of
confessional curates being scattered all over the
country, being assured that' their existence will
bring the whole system to an end ; but others
who are more scrupulous cannot fail to tell the
itishope, and all in authority in the <March that
they must set their fetus against the Boyne Hill
practices if they wish to save themselves and
preserve their estahlishment
A ROM IN TON LAST, A PDATTY WOMAN AT
TUN BOTTOM or IT. —A correspondent .of the Bos
ton Traveller writing from Syria., gives an ac
count of s serious disturbance in Damascus,
arising out of an Intrigue between the queen of
the harem of one of 'the richest men of llamas
ous and an infidel, who wasajevr, and the drago
man to a foreign consulate. The young men
was repeatedly introduced into the harem, in
woman's clothes, but was finally discovered.
Be made hie escape, and the lady Bed to the
desert, but was discovered and cruelly murdered
her body being literally chopped in pieces and
given to the dogs. The correspondent contin
ues :
"The Naha of Damascus requested .all the
consuls to meet him and consult as to the beet
(worse to be pursued to allay the excitement, for
the Mahomedans has arisen, and' the massacre
of the entire Christian population was threat
ened, and hourly expected. They refused to
'meet him, alleging that the quarrel wan between
I the Puha and offending consulate. The. pee
-1 (de demanded the bead of the dragoman, but
ho was nowhere Lobe found—and it was feared
that the 16,000 Christians residing in Damascus
would be indiscriminately slaughtered.
In this moment of peril, when their lives were
in their hands, timely but unexpeoledaimistance
was rendered. The defiles of the mountains
were darkened by the descent of - the maronites,
who by thousands poured into thestreeta of the
city, espousing the side of the Christiana, and
by their numbers and strength intimidating the
angry and fanatical Tarte. Thus are the Chris
tians preserved and thus are the Moslems held
in check. But the fire is still burning in their
hearts, mut will doubtless burst forth when a
favorable opportunity occurs. This unfortunate
misalliance is deeply to be regretted, not only
on account of its immorality, but upon the
ground that the Moslems are everywhere red hot
with fanaticism, and are ready to use any in
fraction of their laws by the Christians as a
pretext for indulging in their flenish paselons.
It has been with much regret, therefore, that I
have seen Frank sailors wandering about the •
streets of hlohomedon cities intoxicated and In
culling every one they meet. Great care is
necessary at this time, especially In the absence
of any American man-of-war, lest the people.
should rise and: sweep ue out of existence. A
rumor reached this place a few weeks Ilene,
that a plot bad been discovered at .Beirut where
the Moslems had armed thetheelves and appoint
ed the night In which they intended to kill all
the Chrlatiane. Fortunately this. was discov
ered in time to prevent It by en appeal to the
government." •
A Wrr BrAnnier.—The resell of the Penn

favorably upon : the Democretio Petty In thls

The Byracnee Convention . of that party, to be
eure, scast an anchor to windward by the adop
tion of equivocal indorsement resolutionr, but as
Mr. Buchanan will; for two years and' , a half
longer, wield the keysof -the Treasury and the
axe of Executive vengeance, be'cannot be entire

The manifest ebb of the Democratic lade, not
only to Pennsylvania but In the Weetern Steles,
ie severely felt by the friends of Parker and
Taylor. lint In the Congessional eleotions its
effect will be greatest. The premtitude with
which there members who sustained the Prost

TEO Bogota rs BIRKS —CIEXAT EXCITMINNT.--
RIAXI, Oct. 16, A. M.—The official meet
ing of e return judges, yesterday, at IP. M.,
came ar being attended with consequences
ench ea l good men of both parties here would
have h leCored. When met, as is customary, in
the of the Court Honse, the public present;
and, a r the organization of the body, Mr.
Shenk, of Hamburg, after the returns of other
townships and lard's hid bee* read, objected to
the reception of those from the South Weet
Ward of this city. Some slight excitement
among the judges and spectators was occasioned
and another motion, while the motion to exclude
was depending, was offered also by Mr. Shenk,
that the judges and secretaries return to the
Grand Jury room to attend to the business upon
which they wore met. This motion was carried
including the reporters of the Preen.
In perfect quiet the out/lidera sow them retire
to the room designated ; but when a few mo
menta after, the , judges, upon a A:notion of the
same Mr. Shenk, voted - to exclude the report
er* of the press ; and when Col. 'Klaiber, of
Cie Journal, and other gentlemen of the press
came out in a body, and when it became known
that they were excluded also, and by vote of the
judges the motion.to trxcludereturrie yet depend
ing, it created the greatest excitement among
the thousand in waiting. A well known and
influential citizen was deputed to wait on the
judges to inform them that cadent something was
done in the way of quieting the excitement oat
side by a knotiledge of the disposition of the
South West Ward's returns, that the Court
House bell would certainly be rung an Opal
for gathering the people ; and that • dreadful
' excitement, the consequences of which the most
influential could not control, would result. This
excitement was occasioned because the motion
pending when the public were excluded, was on
all hands regarded as transcending the limits of
prerogative on the part of the judges.
This Ward bad a majority for Mr. Shenk, and
Mr. Shenk and most of the judges were under
stood to be the friends of Mr. Jones. A few
moments after, the .citizen, who entered the
room of the return Judges, came out and an- '
nounced that the Judges had not yet gone be
hind the returns; that they bad voted te receive
them, and that -Mr. Sohwartz's majority was
officially announced to be nineteen over -Mr.
Jones.
Then wild cheers and almeet frantic) rejoicing
were heard and seen on all bands, and within
three minutes of theta:dal announcement, the
figures were on their way to the Bulletin.
The Hein of canton began and was continued
until dark, at which time bands of mimic and
large processions defiled into the &large, lighted
with vast bonfires. The already excited thou
eands cheered loudly before, but when the an
nouneement was made that Sohuylkill county
was then firing 100 guns for Old Berke—the
news having been sent by telegraph, to Col.
Lantz—the vast assembly fairly shook the square
with their cheers. Thus plumed the evening,
and not until after 10 o'clock did the bonfires
cease to blaze or the multitudes disperse. -
The walls of the oldest houses were never
witness of greater excitement than on hat eve
ning and on the night of yesterday. Amidst all
it is gratifying to know that good feeling pre
vailed, and the amenities of life were preserved
between victors and vanquished.—Correspon
dmee of the Phila. Evening-Bulletin.
TiLLOILAPII SICRETS to Faooce.—lt may be
interesting to telegram transmitters in. France to
know that their private 'Haire are duly commu
nicated to the Minister of the Interior, and that
special functionaries are employed in selecting
from the various interesting dispatches, mes
sages of love, of mourning, of business, or of
despair, to amuse the leisure moments of the
Government offioial. Having bad the occasion
of late to use this beneficient gift of science
somewhat extensively, I was curious to observe
that copies of each telegram were - taken before
transmission. On inquiry, I .find that no lees
than roar tranaripts!are made for various depart
mentsoutd of course the ostensible object is to
put the GovernMent in posaassion of possible or
eonstructive treason. But how is thie end to be
obtained! When Thompson sends word to
"look after Lis carpet-bag and transmit it by
the next train," now Is the solemn official to
know that the "carpet-bag" may not mean an
Odrini bomb in the conventional slang of a con
spiracy ! I merely notice the fact to exhibit the
otkessioess of continental power and the folly of
Its prophylactic expedients.—Para Cer. London
