conducted the democratic campaign deceive] not
only oar men but themselves. Many of thee*
poor creature', led'away by their owlishly va

• on the result, and havelost heavily. Fools and
their money are soon .parted,
• Three are ease& sahlable lessons taught by
the result. The first is, the importance of or
. • poi:Mien and work. We have carried this eke
.
firm by 'toady work. At the very outset of the
fight the County Committee organized, prepared
- • its address to the teople, arranged fors thoti-„
ugh Callylloll of the county, and resolved on
carrying the war, into the enemy's country.
Meetings were appointed for each election dis
trict and speakers assigned to them; end al
though the al - Fenno at first were appointed but
one or two for each day, the demand for them
- soon lammed at each a rate that we were oom
pelled at list to hold from six to ten meetings ti
day in various parts of the county. The people
loon waked up under this vigorous canvassing,
and the Republican vote was so well stirred out
that our majority is equal to that of a Presi
dential campaign.
In this connection it behoove' us to state that
nraoh credit is due to ldesoza. Marshall, Howard,
Collier, Kirkpatrick, Carnahan , Watson, Geyer,
Brown, Pleeson, Moffitt, Koethen, /Rebated, A.
BY-Foster, Raton and several other speakers, who
~:ipare their efforts freely in canvassing the
[Mr. Raton is now sick, and there is
no impropriety in his colleagues including his
namedin this These gentlemen, at much
inionvonienee to themselves, devotedtheir time
to the task of securing a Republican violory.
The second lateen taught us is, the strength
. of the Republican organization. No- party was
ever more bitterly, recklesslynr vindictively as
sailed!. The assault was led by men who but
lately were members of our party, and they did
all that human ingenuity could do to make a
break in ourvanks and distract our forces.—
. Thanks to the discipline maintained, thdy were
'turned back as by an impregnable wall of bay
, mats. After sustaining the shook of such at.
Laski, wif may safely conclude that it is able to
„withstand any .figurelasaults from without. It
has nothing hereafter to fear, except frdm
within.
- The third; and perheys most important, les
. eon taught le; that we - must , hercafter, in menet.
Ins our party affairs, take care to avoid the
- causes of dispute and dissatisfaction which
seemed so likely, at one time, to distract and
divide us. This is a subject for future consid
eration, and we merely allude to it, now, for the
purpose of keeping it in mind.
Where every part. of the county did so well it
may seem invidious to particularize ; but we
cannot avoid making honorable mention of
Fawn, the two Deers, Indiana, the let and 2d
wards of Pittebttrgh, the city of Allegheny, Mc
- KeespOrt, Elizabeth, the Blianinghams, South
and"Weit.pittaburgh, Monongahela, Chartlere,
Wilkinr, Deno, Lower St. Clair and Versailles.
. a. The Repnblintans of thompalistricts worked nobly;
and although the RepubliCine of every part of
the county di•J•well, there did a little better, and
we therefore make special mention of them, In
' • Baldwin, Snowden, Upper St. Clair and South
Fayette the Republicans nobly withstood the
pailitent efforts made to distract them and,
oceuidering the peculiar circumstances with
which they wero snrroneded, they deserve the
thanks of their friends in other parts of the
4 county.
.The victory is one of thelnost complete ever
' won in the county. At no ordinary election of
the kind has such a majori•y been gives. It is
• . re • nke to the' demagogues who have
been laid in the shelf by it; arid one of Re most
salutary 'issuing will be found in the fact that
it effectually kills off the noisy, and unprincipled

I great body of the Americana have heartily co

in Philadelphia have had little effect. The
union for Free Territory, Pure Elections and
Protection to Home Industry, item too hearty and
solid to be shaken by the tricks of demagogues
bought and owned by the common adversary.
But the Republicans and Americans united
i could not have won so sweeping a viotory with
out the powerful aid of the Douglas Democracy.
These faithful detotees of the doctrine of Popu
lar Sovereignty, organised and led by John W.
Forney, had resolved to punish the recreants
who devised and urged on the Lecompton fraud,
and they have done it effectually. Buchanan is
routed in his own State, and ` Federal subservi

blow from which it will not soon recover. ALL
HAIL, Peal PVINSTLTA2fIA 1"
The Philadelphia Nerth American, lifter in
dulging in warm oongratulations over the gen
eral result, has the following very proper para
graph, which we 'commend to the attention of
our friends here:
"Whatever may be the result of this day's
work, it cannot change our duty. A victory,
if won, can, at this stage, only be partial; and
all the advantagea of it will be lost by after
negligence. A defeat even would be better now
than any apparent success which should lead to
failure carelessness. The people must take the
work in their own bands, and keep it--not nt
Periods of excitement only, but always. It is
not to talk politics, commonly so called, that we
would urge Americans, but to etudy the subject
related to government and political economy; to
give more breadth and scope to their inquiries:
to cause our young men to be educated In the
principles of republican government and the ra
tionale of republican usages. Mere vote coun
ters and calculators of chances, are politicians
only in the lowest sense of the word. To be
come an adept in this sort of thing may suit
office-eeekers, but should never content the am
bition of men who profess to have any 'take in
the prosperity of the country beyond their own
selfish ends. If the theory of republicanism is
maintained, the United States should be the beet
government in the world. Perhaps it is; but we
should be very sorry to think that the word beet
in our case forbids' further progress and im•
provemeut." .
