Tug ORIOLE AND PURPOSE Or 'tits Una WAR
-For more than a year have the people of thie
government been in the fog as regards the Mor
mon difficulties, but at last the mist has cleared
uway, end it is now easy to BED that the whole
meventetit was principally, if not entirely, a
premeditated attempt to rob the Treuury, and
to enrich the peasonal and political friends of
the Secretary of War.
It will generally be remembered that the
troop. destined for Utah were delayed lest year
at Fort Leavenworth until late In the eummer,
under the pretext that they were required to
mantain order in Kansas. Oen. Hanley was as
signed to the command in. Utah, but the troops
marched without him, and after arriving within
one hundred and twenty miles—of Great Salt
Lake City, they were stopped a month to wait
for their commander. One-third of del month
would have put them in the Mormon capital,
but the opportiMity was lost, and they were
compelled to pass the winter under MOMS.
Those f►voraa. mortals who enjoyed the privi
lege of spending last winter in Washington,
doubtless recollect a white-headed, patriarchal
looking gentleman, who woe very much of a
lion at the President's "'bream" and at all the
fashionable parties. It was Captain Yin Vilet,
quartermaster, who went to Utah in adeance of
the troope, ostensibly to purchase supplies—an
object however, which he failed to accomplish.
The Captain reacned Washington atiout the let
of November last, and made a written report of
Ms journey and of the temper, strength and
military resources of the Mormons !le repre
sented them as unanimous in their determination
to resit the entrance of the federal troops into
their capital, and capable of bringing about
twelve thousand armed men Into the field against
the United States.
During the past winter and epring we ready.

effectually close the road against our grimy."
These reporte were either the taus. or the
pretest 1 ,, r despatching this spring about four
thousand additional troops, four thousand beef
cattle, one thousand surplus horses, eight hun
dred eix-,onto goverutneqt wagons, and about
(our thousand contractors tragnne, loaded with
supplies Two toltlittoonl generals were then
ordered to Utah, and in Imitation of the plan
punned in the Mexican war, a peace commis
pion was also sent.
Among the legion of °filoe seekers and treas
ury plunderers diet thronged Washington last
winter, a Colonel Mitchell, of Bt. Louis; a Mr.
Dorris, of Platte county, Niifl9OUll .• sail a,thlrd,
whose name has not transpired, oblaiiiial from
our too accessible Secretary of War ati: r urder

immedistely sell it to the Quartermaster for one

Atwater needy politician went to Mr. Floyd
to get a ooniraot for furnishing beef cattle for
the Utah troops, hut owing to resolutions which

prwnre rf a friend, a detailed statement of the
wants out dispositions of the Flobsistenee De

the friend might have any advantage which such
knowledge would give him;
Another more fevered individual procured an
order that the Quartermaster in St. Louts,

The brat news of Gov. Cumming having gone
Into Balt Lake City wee not credited by the Ad
rolostrat inn, end was obviously displeasing to It ;
but nevertheless the Governor did enter without
any cecrtrt . and his authority waV immediately
and universally recognized. At soon aa our
army obtained the necoeseary subsistence and
animals, it also marched In without encounter
ing any resistance. The military member of
the Peace Commission states that the greatest
force t h the Mormons oould have equipped to
repel uur advance, would not have exceeded six
hundred men, and that the famous fortifications
in Eaho Pass were piles of Those stones thrown
op without enrregard to military prinolples,
and that all of them were overlooked nod com
manded by the adjacent heights.
The President's proclamation pardooieg all
Mormons who would return to their hanien,
though an eat of folly for which he has yet to
aooount, ellows pretty clearly his estimate of the
danger to be apprehended Iron them.
In fact, tend this Is the point to ethielt we
