I Gen. TAXIS B. MOORIIEAT ,
Now, wo undertake to characterize this as an
i unblushing falsehood. There is not one word of
truth in it. Gen. Moorhead is not, in any
shape, a holder of county railroad bonds.—
Be has no interest whatever in the settlement of
the question at istme about (hose bonds, and
his hands aro as clean, in that matter, as those
of Mr. Burke or Mr. Campbell.
We do not suppose that Mr. Burke would
have made such a reckless and unjustifiable
. charge as this, If he had not been deceived.
The men who are using him have misled him,
1 and he has been betrayed into an act of gross
1 ungentlemanliness through his trust in them.
, During the whelOof this campaign lion. Moor
bead head hes treated and spoken of Mr. Burke as
, one gentleman should of another, and this's Sill
reward for it. Instead of returning the courtesy
i thus shown him, Burke repays it by retailing one '
of the vilest political slanders concocted during
this campaign . .
There is ono thing, however, made manifest
by this, and that is that the men who resort to
it are conscious of approaching defeat.. it Is
deperation which drives them to it. Lies man
ufactured on the eve of an election always indi
cate a party goaded to madness by the certainty
of an overthrow. The falsehood we have ex
posed is the last lard of the political gamblers
who have tasked their all and see that the game
is pretty surely loaf.

Gen. Moorhead and the 'Working Nan
Oar 'esudhlAto for Congress, Gen. Moorhead,
has been all hie life a working man; and so
tboionibiy is be imbua with the spiritof work
that any Irma, looking upon
.bim for the first
time, would at onco saenlify him with the toiling
millions: Ho has carved his own way, from the
daps of Lin early boyhood, by hard er,,rl; : and
there is not an honest workingman in all the
county who cannot approach him with perfect
freedom or- whom he is ashamed to take by the
hand. lic has ever been the working man's
friend; and them is not a workingman to be
found who will nay that Gen. Moorhead ever did
him an injur 4 y, or treated him unkindly, or pass
ed him by proudly. Yet an attempt has been
made to show that this man is an oppressor, a
tyrant, thaenetny of the poor man and the per-
accutor of tho unfortlinato Mr. Burke, him-
self, yen been running arOiina the .county with
this kind of twaddle in his mouth.; and his tin
derstrappers have played upon this one string
with all the industry; though not with the abil
ity, of Paganini.
And who, think you, reader, is the man put
up seiho Pcople's friend—the devoted servant
of thit woildrigman I No less a personage than
Asnwr Bcaus—a starched, perfumed, kid
glortid,, gold•spectacled dandy, who never had
eyes for a workingman in his life until therm-
tionAl office-holder; brought him from the Beau
sion of his law office. This haughty, pompous
(Allow, who struts through the streets scented
and tricked out like an Adonis, this is the cham
pion of the workingman against their oppressor
Oen. litoorbead ! Could anything be more truly
ridionlous?- •
( Nit person can look upon the two men—the
one a plainly-dressed, unostentatione man, with
all the evidences of industry about him, and the
other a starched and conceited fop with more
adaptability to the boudoir than the workshop—
amf.say, honestly,. that Gen. Moorhead is the
workingmau's enemy and Bucks his friend. The
plain, blunt, sturdy General *Mild pass for a
workingman, anywhere; the other would be
taken for an ambitious aspirant to the place of
Beau Drammen. We understand that he is es
e pecially conspicuous in albums, hunting imbues
to ladies' eyebrows, and doubtless in his dreams
seen ace and ribbons fly. Ile meditates upon
cravats, adopts his conelurions as to the tasteful
ness of a billion or a collar with the profound
discrimination of , a statesman. A coat, poorly
fitted,. is the unpardonable sin of his creed.
Thus caparisoned, be saunters in fashionable
society,. and delights the ears of simpering
belles with choicely culled vandal or graceful
.compliments.
• We have never known anything in politics at
mien s° disreputable and silly as this shallow
trick to pass off as imported dandy as the la
boring man's friend. Gen. Moorhead has spent
the hest years of his life in Our midst. lie has
invested his mesas here, worked hard to build
up the material prosperity of the city, has done
all in his power to furnish constant and reran
nerative emplopioent to a large number of me

ad lathers, and has in every possible
way contributed liberally to every judicious en
terprise for the benefit of the poor. In all this
time, what has Andrew Burke been doing for the
benefit of Pittsburgh and the thousands of work
era who constitute the backbone of its body t
We confess oar inability to lay our finger upon
the record of a single fact identifying him
with the industry of the city ; and the fact that
he thought ea meanly of the district as to gather
,tip what means be had and migrate to another
district, Is a better evidence of his desire to get
sway tram contact with its eitisens than of
W. any sympathy or identity of feeling with them.
It iP, perhaps, too small an affair to slit, no
n.u.n attention to ; but the effort to cry down
Moorhead all the enemy of the workingman is so
contemptible that we may be excused for ex
pressing a hearty indignation at it.

The County Finances!
The finances of Allegheny county were never
in such a frightful condition so now.. Since thelo
corocos gut control of the Commissioners' office
things hare grown from good to bad and from
bad towrorse, until the minty stands, at this
moment, on the verge of bankruptcy. There in
no money in the treasury and done coming in.
Warrants to the amount of over $BO,OOO are out
standing, with no prospect of speedy redemp
tion. Jurors, who come-in here from the cone
try at a heavy expense, are turned empty away
from the' doors of the treasury, without a cent
to pay their bills or enable them to get home;
and all the other creditors of the county are in
a similar plight. Nor is this all. ThiCommis
j sionere go on drawing warrants, totally regard
lessen( the inability of the county to pay them;
and the affairs of the county appear lo be man;
aged in so elipehod a manner that no one knows
. how far the mischief has gone nor whore it 'is
to end. Confusion reigns supreme; and the
prospect heforo the tai-pay ere for 1659 is truly
a sorry 008
In thiticondition of affairs it beoomea a ques
tion for the tax-payers to decide whether they
will continue the control of county matters In
locefoco hands, after the experience of one year
of such rule. Are we to have, not only another,
but still another year of such idiotic manage
ment! It is for the people to nay. They are
baked to elect Fetter, and BO add two yearn
more to locofoco rule in the county; and where
will the county be, after two more years like the
present in the management of county affairs!
We . cannot believe it possible that the• people
will be to regardless of their own interests as
thus to perpetuate the present incompetent dy
nasty. One year in enough of such experience,
and if the people are wise they will rebuke, in
stead of endorse, the men who have brought the
county into such a scrape.
The campaign is now nearly over. It has been
an extremely active one, at least on the part of I
the Republicans. The county has been thor
oughly canvassed, mid we believe : that more
meetings have heen held, and that they have
been better attended, than in IS.A. We
have held nearly can hundred meetings in
various parts of the county, nearly
,every
township having had two meetings and others
more. The attendance at all these meet
ings has been quite large, and we are pressed to
learn that the Republican spirit has _ been
thoroughly aroused iu the country districts, and
that many of them promise to give as large ma
ijorities as they did in 1850. Nothing could be
more encouraging than the spirit manifested by
the working Republioansthroughout the county ;
and we anticipate such a cheerful rally to the
; polls on Tuesday next, as will ensure a victory
of which the gallant Republicans of Allegheny
may well feel proud.
