Robert McKnight, Esq.
The campaign just closing has been signal
ize.' by tho gross personalities and abus e
peeped upon this gentleman, one of the moot
amiable and worthy citizens of Allegheny city.
His great crime consists in having defeated
Williams and Robinun for the nomination. It
we mortal wound to the vanity of both, and
neither have forgiven him for it.. With the true
instincts of dishonor they both commenced at
onoe to hunthim down, and they have pursued
him ever since with a battalion of lies and all
, the artillery they could muster from the arse
nals' of malice. Fortunately, the people know•
both tlieircandidate and his revilers and all their
attacks upon him have proven futile.:
Along with the lies and abuse hurled at Mr.
McKnight, there has been continually repeated
a sneer at his being '•a Christian gentleman."—
It is an offence, in their eyes, it would seem, to
be subject to such a designation; and they ap
pear never to haze tired in ringing the changes
upon it. It it is, In their eyes, a crime to be a
"Christian gentleman," there are, fortunately,
thousands of good citizens who will_ regard it
otherwise.
Mr. M'Katanr is a native of the county and
always taken a warm interest in its prosper-
Ity. Sin falba , was an honored and influential
citizen, enterprising and useful; and the whole
fatally can say what Thomas Williams never
could nay, that they have used their means to
increase and promote the business and material
welfare of the city and county. The young
Clay Whip of 1844 well remember the seal and
ardor displayed by Rouser Mlisionr, in that
campaign, when he was just entering upon his
• career es a citizen. The contest was waged
mainly upon the Tariff issue—art issue in which
Allegheny county bad a deep stake; and while
Thomas Williams was enjoying an inglorious
earn, Mr. Dl'Knight was giving his beat ener
gies to the salvation of Pennsylvania interests.
There is no man in this community who en
joirli better reputation as a high-toned, honest
and trustworthy citizen, than Mr. li'lEnight. He

of all,who are.familisr with himv and the inter
ests of the 22d district could not be confided to

Mr. Williams lute been making war, be it un
deigned, upon the whole system of tree passes,
aqd hc. has - declared that no man could accept
.. Wits not distioneet. As a sufficient an-
ewer to these sweeping charger, we put in the
fact that he, the man who thus makes a broad
assertion
. wlthout a - word of qualification, bas
beau himself the recipient of free passes; add
be comes back with the excuse that if he did
use them, it was while he was engaged in the
service of the company. If thin justification is
g00d,., then all his denunciations against the
system are wrong, for he proves by it that there
may bo instances In which the use of a free pass
islustifiable. Either, then, 'his justification is
worthless or his denunciations fall to the ground.
The probability is that Mr. Williams thought
that this matter of his using a free pus had
been forgotten or would- not be raked up, and
that he could make a little political capital by
riding the anti-free-pass hobby. Ills calculi
tion In this respect has failed him ; the records
of the past are not so easily forgotten; his deedi
rise up from their graves to confront him ; and
he finds that playing the demagogue is a much
.mote difficult task than he had anticipated. De
sad exposed, he resorts to a quibble .ths.t
would disgrace a schoolboy, and makes himself
-the laughing stock et every looker on.
Tea COMILLIAVILI.I RAILILOAD Ceea: Mr.
Williams has always been esteemed one of the
best lawyers at the Pittsburgh bar, and it was
not liithmit some astonishment that hie brethren
saw him using all his efforts to secure—the ad

Gen:Wm. Lorimer, setting forth that the said

Thomas Williams in a new Character.
,
We haiei shown up Ttimaas ;Williams in tho :
I -va r i ous phut) of 41111pitet` career ; but there
one point that Las beau ,overlooked—to
ttArmsyt. In •1844 a 'Polies - hmerhan Assn=
elation
Motion was formed in- this county, which
an
nouncedo as a kart of its platform the following : t
"That the ctective .franchise should bo pre
served pure and uncorrupted.
0 77orlthStern: of probation for the Naturalization
of all foreigners n;:ght to be extended to handy • one
; (21) years; Aand that the proceedings necessary
to obtain certificates of Naturalisation ought to
be 80 ordered, by law, as to prevent fraud and
corruption therein.
, "That we do not propose by legislation to di
vest foreigners of any rights already acquired
under our existing lows, but that in our opinion
1 the rights of eitieenship to br extended hereafter,
; ought to br so qualified os to deny to their recipients
the privilege of holding any offlre of trust or profit
under this government."
On the sth of August, 18.14, the Association
held a meeting and wo extract the following
from its minutes
"It wa I hen moved. and motion carried, that
a committee of fire-he appointed by the chair
to prepare an address to the people of ti Ileghe
ny county.
"The following persons were then appointed
as that committee : Thom. William", A. W.
Marks, Thomas McConnel, R. W. Middleton,
and Alexander Jaynes."
This fully identifies Mr. Williams with that
platform, and there is nothing on record to show
that he has. ever changed his views. And yet
he is now courting the votes of Roman Catholics
andloreigners, descending to all the claptrap
demagoguism which he condemned in 1844,
and palming himself off as one who was never
suspected of Nativism, We commend this re
cord to the consideration of some of his sup
porters.
With this issmt of our weekly we enjoy the
last opportunity of reaching our country readers.
and we avail ourselves of it to urge upon them
the importance of the pending election and the
duly they owe to their party and their princi
ples. The permanence and usefulneas of our
party depends upon the integrity with Which its
organization i 6 maintained. If locofoco dema
gogues are suffered to come in and lead our men
away, upon any pretence they may choosetoget
up, it requires no prophet's eye to foresee that
the parry will soon , be-destroy-ed. It is not by
listening to the enemy that our ranks are to be
kept in order. We Must, if we would carry our
principles forward td success, stand firmly by
the organization -and its — candidates. Let as
have no half triumphs—no divided victories.—
The only way to get along with locofocoism is to
I defeat it, and defeat it thoroughly. Let the Re
publicans of the county, therefore, as They love
their principles and desire - their success, rally to
the support of the whole ticket, and give it au
overwhelming triumph.
Z'aotteue Patterion
Oar estimable candidate for County Commis-
Manor has been visiting various parts of the
county daring the last two weeks, and he has .
been everywhere warmly welcomed. The peo
ple have heard him define his positiOn on the
tax question, with a plain bluntness which
shown that ilia honest, and wherever he has
been beard the people have shown that they
confide in him. We regret that ho has beerinn
ble to visit the whole county : hot we trust that
the Republicans everywhere will take especial
care of his case and—see that he suffers no un
fairness nor iojustioe. if Farley is elected, it
will give the control of the board to the demo
-srala for two years to come, including the ap
pointment of tax collectors and the vast patron
age of the uffice; and are Republicans willing
to see this power put. into locofoco hands, to . te
wielded against on not only in IMO, but
throughout 18GO! If not, let them rally to the
support of Patterson, and so nip the locofoco
aches, In the bud.
That Threa MW Tax.
The loeofoco CommissiOnert, we understand,
not only admit the levy of the three mill State
Tax, but undertake to justify IL They admit
that the law allows a Levy of but 1!I mills. but
elsim the right to levy mnro, if they please
Now, the tax-payers of this county should
arrest this illegal proceeding, at ones. after all
the outcry we hays bad from the locafocos about
illegal taxes, ore they to be permitted to levy a
manifestly illegal tax! The question admits of
but one answer. The State tax wee reduced by
the legislature from 3 to Di mills in order to
lighten the burden of taxation upon the people;
and are the people of Allegheny to he defrauded
of their share of relief by the high-handed pro
ceedings of the lceofoco Board of Commissioners,
who assume to be greater than, and above, the
legislature' There is but one way to answer
fhis question; and that is to vote for Zscusus
Parrsason for Commissioner; for otherwise the
present locofoco board will consider their illegal
course endorsed.
DZIITHUCLION or ?TIC CaIiBTAL PALM:B.—The
destruction of the Crystal Palace, yesterday,
wan one of-the most disastrous eanfsgrations
that New York has been visited with in a long
time, The calamity has streak every one aghast
(or the possibility of such an event has never
been calculated upon. The peculiar character
of the building, constructed as it was almost
entirely of iron and glass, appeared to bit de
fiance to the flames, yet its destruction was
more rapid than any building of wood 'could
possibly have been ; in lees than fifteen minutes
from the time the fire was discovered the flames
spread with each fearful rapidity that the im
mense dome, which has so long been an object
of beauty towering over the City, and a land
mark from every approach, fell, and the work
of destruction was complete. It was like a
flesh. The great fabrio of glue and iron, with.
its priceless treasures of art, were suddenly
wiped out of exietenceas though they had been
mere unsubstantial vapor. The earth bath bub
bles as the water bath, and this was of them.
At no other time could the disaster have been
mare - deplorable in its consequences than the
present. The building itself, though-immense
ly costly. was of but secondary importance to
the wealth of objects which it contained. The
Thirtieth Annual Exhibition of the American
Institute was silts height, and there was a
collection of objects of art and industry whose
value could not be repreiented in figures. There
were models of machinery which have cost years
of toil and study, precious inventions,
rare
, gems, exquisite _ examples of mechanical loge
tinily and skill, and many products of the high
er arta. There were also cues of splendid jew
elry, of gold and silver ware of Immense value,
and innumerable kbjeots which can never be
replaced. The entire value of the articles de
stroyed by this terrible fire cannot be accurate
ly estimated, but it cannot be lent than half a
• ofdollais.'An - always hippest!' in Such
cues, there appeared to be a fatal concurrence
of accidents to accelerate the ruin. The fire
broke out to that part of the building where
there happened to be the greatest quantity of
inflammable materials; the apparatus for extin
guishing fires gave out at the moment it was
needed, and there was a high wind, which suck
ed the flames up into-the dome and along the
galleries, where all sorts of combustible arti
'ties were placed, as if on purpose to feed the
'devouring element.
'There-were in the building when the alarm
of fire was given some two thousand persons,
and the one consolation to be derived from the
greittliauter is that all of this crowd were ena
bled to escape without harm. It .was a miracle
that no one was killed in the sudden collapse of
tbe.enormous structure.—N. P. limes. -
