Thomas Williams avid Id. Free Pass.
We do not think it a very great crime to take
and use a free pus; bui. Me. Thomie Williamu
does, or professes to do so. • He wrote the reso
lationtrof two conventions which diluent:toed the
recipients of, free passes as dishonest men; he
declared through his, paper that he would not
support any man for *Moe who hadactepted
one; and , when he was charged-with having
used one, himself, heindignintly denied it. In
hie speech at Bakerstown, In that hbuied and
omarteone phrase for which he in so retemikable,
he said—"McKnight tied when lie Mid that I
ever rode on a free pass." Now, as McKnight
never said so, the lie would seem to rest in the
contrary quarter; - bat let that lie go, while we
expose the other lie involved in it, to wit, that
he never used alree pass. The follonithg letter,
addressed to Mr. McKnight, is a settler:

railroad interest, whioh he addressed to the
Councils of Philadelphia only butt year. He
was the city Solicitor, and gm hie opinion
in that matter, Dol, as the feed lawyer who is
paid for in opinion to oeder, but as a sworn ex
am:diva officer of the city. It was a judicial
tether than a professional opinion; and may;
therefore, be properly taken as an indication of
his real sentiments.
It will be seen that. Mr. Porter speaks most
contemptuously of those who would resist the
payment of interest on railroad bonds. He says
the old women would hoot at them, and that the
14001 children, shamed by the conduct
oftheir elilers, would Miss the money by cent
contributions. •
Now we are not 'alsotionserini against Mr.

clearly and unmistakably, as the friend of rail

utter hypocrisy and insincerity. How can

Ma. Itintax is trying to make capital ant of
our article against him, by alleging that wo
have denounced him for being a poor man. He
puts on a wounded.dignity, says it 1$ true he is
poor, and then makes a demagogue of himself
as none but a blatant democrat can. It so hap
pens, however, that we have never laidlhe
crime of poverty to hie charge. His colleague,
Mr. Williams, end his organ, the True Press, I
have both denounced us for Wag poor, end we
are not silly enough to follow such an example. '
We do not belong to Mr. Burke's school of poll
Wens, and wr leave ell such manifestations of
' aristocracy to his organ and his oollsegaes..
Mat we did say, was, that Mr. Burke had noth
ing whatever at stake in ihis'district' . Not- that
he was poor, but that he did not tine In the ks
trict, and had nothing at stake in it. He may
be a rich man, for aught that we know, and it
is nothing to his discredit if he is not ; but he
has no intermits here, in the district which he
aims to represent. He has east in his lot with
the people of the 224 district, and that Is where
be ought to ran, if be wants to go to Congress.
He dots not think enough of the people of this
district to live among them, bat - hae betaken
himself elsewhere; and we claim that the peo
ple here ought to prefer a man who lives in
their midst and bag adventured all his means in
promoting their prosperity. Moorhead is one
of us ; while Burke is a mere office-hunter, with
nothing whatever in common with us.
