t where malice; hatred, detraction and envy assail
with envenomed tooth those who have risen an

I Press in reference to Gen. Moorhead, of which
we have spoken, bears theinfernal impress of all
these furies as well as the brazen stamp of false
. hood. The assassin of private reputation who
far any purpose would utter each infamous false
', hoods as the following, deserves the execration
of his fellow men and a fate more Ignominious
thin that of the convicted felon. Speaking of
the "ten hour law" the True Press siys:
"Did Mr. Moorhead as a good 'citizen obey I

contracts to work as formerly and turned them

of the wholeartiole referred to. We ask• the
candid reader to peruse the subloined letter
from the owners of the mills who are cogniuint
of the circumstances, and then forni their esti
bite of the truthfulness of the charges made
by the True Press against Glen. Moorhead. We
may as well here promise however that the Cot
ten Factory Operatives were never indicted for .
"Conspiracy" as charged by this mendaciotui
press, but for ''.liiet," and that Geri. Moorhead
was into way connected in that prOseaution or
in any other, as appears front the Judicial re

ALczananr, Oct. let. IEISB,
Gan. J. K. if ooansan—Sir : We hire received
your note of yesterday, requesting us, sa cotton mill
proprietors,' cotemperazy with yourself, to state brief
ly what we know or the facts charged againstyou in
an article under the editorial head of the True Pre..
of the 29th ult. We tray in reply:
.The "ten hour law" was peeved in 1849, to go into
effect in July of that year. All the :suttee mill
owners In this county were willing to adopt the ten
hour system siseurroneousiy with the mills in other
manufacturing States, with whom they had to com
pete for the Western market. They were always
willing to omtionnlis' e. and opposed tolocatisiag the
reduction of hours, believing that to do So would be
destructive to the cotton mill investments in Penn-
Sylvania; and that it was both nojuet and impolitic
for the legislature to impose the whole burden of the
reform upon the citizens end carital of Penn
sylvania.
The mill-owners, yourself included, decided not to
attempt to run their mills under the law ; and stopped
them—not in the 'deed of wittter"—but on the Ist
darof July, 1848. They remained Idle until Sep
tember, 1848, when it was thought beit.' by all the
proprietors, yonialf included, u lest the ten hour
system experimentally; work was resist:nod at ten
hours, and continued throb the remainder of 1349,
all of 1849, and until Nor. 1850, It was in March,
1849 that the Union Factory, of Mooshaad, Cope
, .L
land Co., the only one in which you Mire ever con
! earned, was destroyed by fire. So•thet it will be
- seen that your mill never run more than ten hours
after the passage of that law, - Itat was engaged with
the others in a faithful, albeit , and expensive and
fruitlesseurt to make simple ittterearoplitir .pltal.
[ iirras..era Rene nagautryq
Trom seventy-two to seventy-eight hours perweek,
week,
while ours were required by the law to run but sixty
hours. It . folly to try—but the experiment was
faithfully tried, and demonstrated to *be imprac
ticable-
Except a few small fir e

prenticee preparing to I rptoorre) the wages of
females—toll bands—wee. from $2,25 to $4,50 per
week. And noatrempt was ever made . by you, or
other proprietors, to rednce these rates, except during
the experiment of the "tees horn syatam," whin
the runotiod, but not the ram of wages, was slightly
reduced,
The difficulties with the mob and the operatives
acting with them, alluded to in the True Pm', didn't
occur at yours but at another establishment with
which you had no concern; no were yout-a party to
any of the suits that grew out of that transaction,
nor to any prosecutions for conspiracy -4i charged
in th e Prew, as the judicial records will doubtless
show.
It sufficiently appears from what t. already :said,
that the astern= that your consent to adopt the
ten hour law, was withheld, while the other mill
owners contented, is not true either iti letter or
spirit.
