- an gieenyll p_rtritod circular, professing a
"gresddeil of anxiety stout protection, and at
tempting to,,naille it appear that Jona M. AZAD
to a free!rada,2llll4 and that he signed a letter to
,
Vice President DAILAB, congratulating him on
his ealiting.vola against the Tariff of 1842. The
letter is given in the circular, in full, and the
authors of it have appended to it the name of
IGEN M. READ, but in so doing they have been
guilty of the grossest forgery. Mr. Read never
signed it. The letter, as originally published
in the Pennsylvanian in 1846, does not contain
the name of Mr. Read. On this point we append
the following certificate:
..
"The files of the Pennsy/eaman have been
searched, and the following appear to be the
facts:—On Tuesday, 28th July, 1846, Mr. Dai
-1 las, as Vine President, gave his casting vote in
favor of the tariff of that year. On Wednesday,
the 29th, a letter was written by Athanaains
Ford, signed by him and a number of democrat
, le citizens, to fili:Dallas, approving his vote of
the preceding day; to which Mr. Dallas replied,
in a letter dated (Saturday) August let; which
correspondence wee published in the Pennsylva
nian of Wednesday; August sth. Amongst the
signatures to the letter of the 29th of July the
name of John M. Read does not appear, but
I therein the name of John F. Read, a rmeetable
democratic eitiseb, who then resided in Chester
street, in North Mulberry Ward, but who now
residea at No. 240 Madison street and who ap
t proved the conduct of Mr. Dallas in , giving his
casting vote for the tariff of'46.
In additiovo these fasts we are authorized by
Mr. John M. Read to say that he was not to
the city of Philadelphia when the letter of the
29th of July, and the answer of Mr. Dallas of
the let of August; were written, and that he
never saw the original of the letter of the 29th
of July, nor did he over sign it, nor authorize
anybody to sign it - fir him.
Mr. Carey furnishes us with the following:
I have examined the Pennsylvanian of Wednes
day, sth August, 1846, and attached to the
letter of 29th July, to Mr. Dallas signed by
Athanasius Ford and others, i - find the name of
John F. Read but not the name of John M. Read .
Manor C. CARET."
Thin conclusively fixes the guilt of forgery up
on Mr. Porter's friends. It is one of the barest
electioneering tricks of which wo have ever
heard; and if Judge Porter has been in any
way privy to it, he deserves the aeorching con
demnation of the people of Pennsylvania
The following we copy from the Philadelphia
papers of Thuredny -
"Joust M. ROAD AND PHOTICTION.—.AL a meet
tog held September, 28th, 1858, of the Commit
tee of Correspoodeoce, appointed under the
resolutions of a meeting, on the 15th of Jane
hat, of the friends of protection and domestic
industry, irreepeative of party, the following
preamble and resolution were adopted.
Whereas, anonymous circulars have been sent
to various parts of the State, assuming the guise
of friendship to the great measure of protection
and asserting that the Hon. John M. Read, now
candidate for Judgeship of the Supreme Court,
had in the year 1828, In the Legislature of the
State, voted against protection—that be had in
the month of July, 1846, signed a letter to Mr.
Dallas, congratulating him on his casting vote in
favor of the tariff of that year; and, generally,
that he had been, and still columned to be, ad
verse to the protection of American labor.
And whereas, the opinions of Mr. Read in
favor of free trade, thirty-five years since, were
held by him, then, in common with Daniel
Webster, and thousands of others, many of whom
have since been distinguished for their advocacy
of protective measures—experience having
taught them, as it has taught him, the destruc
tive effects of the free trade policy.
And, whereas, the assertion in relation to the
letter addressed to Mr. Dallas, is utterly untrue
—ite falsehood haring been clearly exposed in
an editorial of the North American, a copy of
which is hcrto annexed
Therefore, resolved, that we hold John M.
Read to ben decided and earnest friend of Protec
tion to Home-Labor, and as such entitled to claim
the votes of those of his fellow citizens who
advocate that pointy, and that we therefore,
cordially reccommend him to the eupport of all
who desire a revision of the tariff.

THE Mto-SILL Sesectf. - -Below is a portion
of the famous ..saudeill" epeech of Senator Ham
mond, of South Carolina. The Senator belong°
to the rcbool of Free Trade politician° of which
Andrew Burke has always been a consistent
member. Hammond's object is to degrade
orthern labor and reduce it to a level with the
negio elm labor of the South, and if Mr. Burke
is elected he will sot with Hammond in all mat
ters of national policy:
"In all social systems, them mutt be a class to do
ammo; duties, toper/arta the drudgery of life—
that in, a class requiring but a low order of in
tellect, and but little ekilL Its requiting& are
vigor, docility, fidelity. Such a clue you most
have, or you would not have that other class
which leads to progress, refinement and Civilisa
tion IS constitutes the eery MUD-SILLS of
marry and of political government; and you might
as well attempt to build a house in the. air, as to
build either the one or the other ezeept on as MUD
SILLS. Fortunately for the South, she found
a race adapted to that purpose to her hand. We
use them for the purpose, and call them dace.
The man al.: , lives by daily labor, and who
has to put out his labor in the market and take
the best he can get for it, in short, the whole class
of your manual laborers and operation of the North
are SLAVES. The difference between us is that
our stares are hired for lite, and well compen
sated; while your slam are hired by the day,
not oared for, and scantily compensated. i
• Oar +tarn aro black, of another and In
ferior race. Your glares are white,
of yourown race; you are brothers of one blood."
What workingman can read this insulting lan
guage and not feel bin blood - boil in his veins?
And how can any man thus stigmatized by one
of the democratic leaders, Tote with a party of
wbioh he is one of the exponents?
.1 aeon nA77 Peons ask us why we do not
notice the lies of that dirty Poet Office sod Cus
tom House 'Meet by the corner, which aro told
on the editors of the 9azate. Simply, because
neither the grinning wooden head that stand's
for the editor of that rat; nor the Custom Hones
officernor the Poet Blaster nor the deputy alter
iff, all together, can say any thing about any
body thal would be believed, and also because
no one of the editors of the Gazette is a candi
date for office, and what a few scallions may
spit out 'concerning them makes no difference
one
one way or the other to either of the* person
ally. We are too intent on drubbing the pro
slavery Buchanan 'party, in this coualy, to be
turned aside from our purpose by the yelping of
a pack like that which kennels about the cellar
under the stde.walk opposite the Poet Office.
Tuz True Press is amusing itself with copying
extracts from old newepapera, which it palms
off on its readers in lieu of any ammunition of
its own. This is a common resort of editors
who have the disposition to revile their oppo
nents, but suffer from the inconvenience of hav
ing no original material on hand. We might
retort with severity in the same style; by quot
ing Tom Williams' opinion of the party, whose
support be Is even now crawling on his belly and
eating dirt to Secure. Ills views on .democra

quite a - equirming in the piebald organization
of which be le at present the leader, Such a
course however, under present circumstances,
would be decidedly cruel, as Thomas is so com
pletely "down," socially and politically, tbat it
would he a shame to add even a feather to the
load beisnotopelled to carry.
