“Oa Monday night there was tho greatest
meeting of Bepnblicans in the Eighth Ward that
has.been in this ;oity since 1856. There were
2000 people on the ground, and the greatest to*
thnsiaaiajfretailed. J. J. Siebeneck, a German
gentleman, oftEia city, a man of sterling quali
fies of head and heart, opened in a speech In
the German tongue. Mr. S., as we were told,
was exceedingly happy in his remarks, and
those to whom the'speech was specially directed
were highly pleased. He is ono of the old cam
paigners, and . stamped the Wilmot District in
1860. He is one of the most promising lawyers
at out bar.

After him Gen. Moorhead, T. M. Marshall,
and J. M. Kirkpatriok, fisqs., addressed the
meeting. Between the speeches a band enliven
ed the immense audience with capital musio.
The Republicans of tbe Eighth Ward are ready
for tbe conflict and will put bogus demooraey to
tbe rack in October.
Extract or a Letter, dated Sept. 9.. from
Wyandott City, K. T.
“There is great exoitameol all along the river
j thn Missouri) about the gold discoveries near
OTeV PeaV. Several companies are being
formed to start out Immediately. The best fea
ture of tbe reports are, all those who return
bring gold with them and are preparing to go
baok and winter and prospect there. Prom all
the information I can gather I am satisfied there
is a new California on tho eastern slope of the
ICocky Mountains. G and T intend to go
thero next spring.”

adjoiaing the acqucduct, and plunged a large
knife repeatedly through tbo bottom and sides
of-the boat. The paint was scored over in such
a manner as to spoil it completely, and the boat
itself rendered almost worthless. The rascal
who could perpetrate such a cowardly piece of
malicious mischief deserves the severest pun

and will be "happy to see him” at any lime.
