Toe Last Victim or toe Guaxti.it An im perial rescript, bearing the date of the 20th of August, 1864, and the signature of the Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria, has abolished foror ermorc, within the realms of the whoio Austrian Empire, that terrible ohastisemont, Tunning the gauntlet. Terrible it was indeed ; a cruel and barbarous remnant of those dark; and dismal limes oallcd tho middle ages. I witnessed the last execution of this kind;' and record it for the benefit of thosewho still cling witha strange fondness seen to the worst legacies of begone «ntoriea. * • On an autumn morning in the year 1851 the garrison of the fortress of Thereaiensudt on the Eager river, in Bohemia, was formed’in a largo square on the spacious plaee before the Residence of the Commandant. In the middle of the equare, drawn up in a file* Blood n com pany of a Rifle Battallion, to which the delin quent belonged. It was unarmed, each private (there were ihreehundred) beiogproridedwitha switch, aud placed at a small dislanoefrom his next mao. At the tenth stroke of the clook the drums were beaten, and amidst a silence deep and op pressive (he prisoner was marched into the square Uewos as fine a looking man as everlhavo set my eyes upon ; tall, powerful and well form ed. His handsome features, to which ablaok. moustache gave a bold and martial expression shone forth in the full glow and vigor of man hood, ooly they were of o deadly paleness. 110 was a non-commissioned officer, and da ring the last campaign in Italy, In 1849, he had distinguished himself in such a manner that his superior officers bad recommended him for pro motion. Austria Is more gederoos than Eng land towards those that shed their blood in her 1 service, and he would have been mode a com- j missioned officer long since— in spite of hie hum ble origin sod his poverty—if it had not been Tor a fatal impediment. This impediment was bis own passionate temper ; he was a very ©ho lerlo man ; harsh and brutal towards his inferi ors, morose and stubborn towards his superiors whenever they deemed it necessary to check or rebjiko him. He was hated by the men to the almost. There was not a privato in the whole battalion that had not vowed him revenge. He had never made one friend, nor did he care to have one. Strict in the performance of hie I military service—the most minor duties of which ' be discharged with the utmest exactness—he j went bis own wav, proud, reserved, solitary.— Innumerable were the punishments which he ! had brought upon the men ; for however slight Lho otTenso might be, ho was sure not to pass it ! over in silenco. v His superior officers respected him for Lia .Usefulness, his ability, and his exactitude ; but: they did not liko him. The evident Uok of hu manity in the man make him anotyect of doubt mher than of love. Moreoverihemwas&vague rumor about hie having once struck at hie own 1 officer in the midst of a pell-mell caused by n ; hand-to-hand encounter with the enemy. The 1 report never took a clear shape, the officer hav-1 tog been killed in the engagement, and the goe- 1 sipptogs of a few wounded soldiers having been I much to incoherent and contradictory to lead to a lorma! investigation of (he matter; besides it ' was the victory of Netarra. He had greatly dis itoquished himself, and old Field Marshall Rad- 1 eiky bad—with bis own hands—affixed the gol den medal on his breast The rumor, however , together with tbo knowledge of his harsh and j !* wieDl '*“ptr, caused his name to be erased from the list of those that were reoommended | for higher promotion. , When this incident woe made known to him be became even more bullcd, more rigid, maro cruel than ever ; but always—as it was well un derstood—for the benefit of the eervice • tho slightest demands of which he perfonnod with thesamo immutable sirictnees ns ho enforced them ly be doifc by others. A few weeks previous to the dreadful punish ment which he had now to undergo, he was mounting guard in the outworks with eome wenty .. r twenty-five men of Ms own company. It wan a chilly, rainy night. and, when tlicßen- , tries were relieved, they were gad to stretch I themselves—wet as they were-efapon (he floor near the largo stove Id t*e middWof ih e guard- I room. The floor not being very clean (floors Belclom are io these localities,) and the white ' uniforms of lho men being wet, it was no won der that the dirt adhered «o them with a tenacl ty that defied oil exertions to get it off, when the wearers were ruus«d by this errjeant to prepare lor standing guard once more. Tbo more they tried to rub their clothes clean, the more sturdily ho lent a helping hand to their endeav ors by an application of the *ad equipment of every Austrian non-commiesioncd officer—the stick. Whilst he was fully at work, cutting away at the men with a powerful arm, the door opened, and the officer on duty entered the guard-room. "Attention!” coummmlcd theseijennl am] salimag his superior, msUe the usual report lhai nothing worth remarking had happened. The officer ajyouug eueign, Iresh front the military echool, and almoata boy, took no notice whatever of this Important news, but asked the eerjeanl m >om « w l>at impetuous manner:— What he was striking the men for ?" Tbo eerjeanl already much annoyed at this interference, gate a surly and unwilling answer and, when the ynnng officer rebuked him, in a oorerc and perhaps somewhat haughty manner, the violent and passionate man, loting all self-’ control, lifted up his hand against bis officer. '" It was but one fatal moment, quick as liuhl aiog. The uplifted hand never descended ; it was caught by a doien powerful arms. Ue was rellsd to tho ground, and disarmed. Half an hour afterwards bo found himself in irons in the casemates. Lifting tho arm ngaloßt a superior is consider ed a capital ciimo. In ibis case it bad been committed whilst both parties were on dnty, and the Austrian military laws are tha very last in tho world to be trifled with. Tbs following day ho was tried by conrL martial, and sentenoed to be shot. When the sentence was forwarded to the competent authority for ratification, it hap. poned to bo tha superior’s annirersary day; capi tal pnnishment was commoted, the criminal had to run the gauntlet. A cruel act of graoe was this commutation 1 When thrfirst sentence had been read over to* him, be had remained oold and impassable; not a muscle of bis proud face stirred. He did not fear death; bo had looked it in tho face many a Urns without flinching, and to dio in tho open air, pierced by a dozen balls—a soldier’s death' —what should ho care much for that! But when he was informed that he had to run the gauntlet twice through his company, after hav iog been previously dograded, ho trembled for tho first lime in his life. He knew of many a soldier who hsd ran the gauutlet.thrice through a wholo battalion, and not one been the worse for it after oil; he knew of some that had evon married afterwards, and brought up families of children; he was fully aware that the iesuo of this terrible torture depended entirely upon the dispositions of the men. Dreadful reflection Above ail, ho thought of the same, the dishonor and h!s proud heart was well nigh giving way On the evening previous to the panisbment the Seoond Rifle Battalion of Kherenhnller lu fantry would have been unfit for serfloe* the men were drank. They bad got up a carousal tn joy and honor of the oomiog day. B u t in the morning they were sober enough. The drums ceased to beat as soon as tne prisoner bad arrived in the middle of the square; his es cort fell baok. He etood alone near the right i wing of the company. There was a dead si- ; lenoe: not a respiration was to be heard from 1 all the thousands gathered on the spot. The commanding officer read the sentence over to him for the second time. This done, he exhor ted the men according to custom, to dispense with ail feeling of compassion, and to do their duty conformably tp tho law. The colonel went through this part of the formality in a quick and harried manner, as if he were unwilling to perform it. Bo he was: he knew but too well that, In this instance, there was no need whatever for exhortation. Theso preliminaries belog over, the prisoner was delivered into the hands of the provost. When the latter tore off from his uniform the golden lace and galloons—the marks of his them together with the gold medal, at his feet, the face of the. unfortu nate man became purple, and bis dark eye flash ed fire. When he was stripped of his coat and *hirt, and placed at the entry of the terrible street throughiwhich he bad to pass, he became pale again. Two soldiere went ahead of him. they marched backward, with their bayonets presented to his breast, so as to forco him to keep measure to a dram which brought up the rear. The drum was muffled; Us slow and small beats sounded liko the musto of a funeral nm. cession. “ * Wh«a he receded the firat atroko hia features M?umed an expression of pain, and hia fim.*.* Um quivered slightly. . Even his most exasperated enemies might well have been satisfied now: if it had but been possible,..the commanding officer him self would have inlerceeded in his behalf; but this was not even to be thought of, the law most have its course. They faced him right about; ho bad to make the same way baok again. , Tbere* was one formality connooted with this j punishment which was a cruel, barbarous and I shameful mockery; tbo delinquent had to thank hts executioners for his tortures. When the victim had arrived at the file -lea uer of the.right wiDg of his company, and the dreadful execution was over at last, ho throw ono last, long look, full of contempt, at his tor mentors. His eyes, swollen with blood, beamed with an unnatural brightness, his respiration was short and painful; touching his head with his right hand, in token of the military solute, he said in a voice that came out of his throat with a rattling sound, but that was nevertheless distinctly audible all over tho place: M I have to thank your honor for this exquisitepunishmeni and fell down dead, Pekin as Seek bt an American.—A corres pondent of life Philadelphia Inquirer was at Pt-kio, tho capital of China, a short time ogo. and what he saw of it, hdw it impressid him, he thuf describes: 1 . '*Oo arriving at the capital of theChinuo em pire wo find a city containing about two million of inhabitants. Such is the estimate, but doubt less the calculation is made in the usual spirit of Eastern exaggeration. Be that as it may, the walls are fourteen miles in circumference, twen ty-eight feet high, twenty-four feet thiok at the baso and twelvo at the top. There are spaoious towers all round, at seventy feet distant from each other and at all the gates are look-out barracks for the soldiers, nine stories in hight. The metropolis is divided Into two parts, one inhabited by Tartars and the other by the Chi nese. In each there* a street four miles long, and one hundred and twenty feet wide, and the Emperor's pataoes and gardens occupy two-thirds | of the Tartar's city; and nil this besides sub urbs; which are nearly as populous as the city I proper. I Pokin is located sixty miles south of the fa mous Chinese wall, and therefore much exposed to northern and hostilensighbors; yet its fortifi cations are strong, and, nntil the vast machinery of modern artillery, was perfeotlv secure in its palatial halls, the walls, bastions, and towers being impregnable in ancient rimes. Although the Country about Pekin is sandy and unfertile, yet provisions abound, being brought by canals from all the great rivers; add also with its com merce, the merchants being paid in money, as tbo capital is the chief recipient of the revo- i nues of all China. It has ever beoo regarded j as a very exclusive place, the presence of no for eigner being permitted within Its walls ; but now the outeido barbarians are in a fair way of overleaping the sacred boundaries; and it igprob able that this act together with the opening of) Japan. may provoan important ateptonarda the I inauguration of Christianity amoog the millions who are now benighted in Pagan idolatry and I superstition."
