A Valuable Improvement.— That this is an j
era of progress no one doubts, and one peculiar-)
ityof modem progress nnd improvement is iho;;
practical tendency of ouch. We have recently I
been lamenting over tho warped and twisted !
castings of what was onco (and not long since) i
an excellent cooking store. The competition (
whlsh exists between manufacturers has re- |
duced tho price of stores to such extent that 1
manufacturers have been compelled to reduce ‘
tho weight of castings materially, ud in ordi- !
M 7 modern stove is so thin that tho beating I
and cooling process soon causes the centre |
pieces to warp and sink down. When this takes I
place, as all house-keepers know, the draft of the
stove is very much impaired/and it will not
bake.
We have recently examined, and more recent
ly tested io ear own kitchen, one of Mr. Alex
ander Bradley’s' Tropic Cook Stoves, with
opear a patent double top improvement, which
entirely removes the difficulty/and wM be rec
ognised as-a truly valuable improvement. H
consists in a set of hollow centre pieces, con
necting with external openings, by which open
ings a current of cold air is passed through the
centre pieces; the air becomes heated iq its
escapes through numerous email
holes on the under side of tho centre piece,
thereby preserving it from the iojarlous effects
of tho heat, and from warpipg and sinking. It
is an ascertained fact in chemistry, that a ton
of coal producing ten thousand feet 'of gas re
quires one hundred thousand cubic-foot of air
for thorough combustion. The invention of Mr.
Spear, as applied by Mr. Bradley, therefore,
not only adds materially to the durability of tho
stove by preserving the top castings, but it con
sumes tbo gases emitted from the coal, by fur
nishing tbo necessary quantity of atmospheric
air, tbreby saying fuel; U?o combustion created
by these jets of air being introduced alt over
the fire, creates a flame which passes into the
floes around the oven, and produces a more in
tense heat than can possibly be produced by any
non-gas-consumlng stove. Tbe advantages of
this improvement are obvious—the preserva
tion of tho centre pieces, a great saving of facl
and a much quicker and hotter oven from the
same fire.
> Mr." Bradley has . secured the exclusiro
right to use this improvement upon bis
celebrated stoves. Wo desire, here, especially
io direct public attention to an invention which
is so manifestly utilitarian in its character. The
improvement, os attached, to a stove, taffy be ex
amined at tho iEtna Stove Works Warehouse,
No. 4 Wood street.
Repdulican Meetings.— Tho Republicans
were in tho field in earnest, on Saturday. A
first rate meeting was held at Campbell’s Tav
ern and was addressed by Messrs. Collier and
Moffit. We did not learn tho names of the offi
cers. A meeting was held at tho school house
in Noblestown, over which Mr. Wm. Savage was
called to preside, and Mark Robb was chosen
Secrotary. It was addressed by Messrs. Carna
han, Graham, Riddell and Irish. A third meet
ing was held at Cowan’s, in Baldwin township,
which was addressed by Messrs. Howard and
Fenney.
Two meetings wero held on iho Monongahela
.—one in the afternoon at the beautiful new
school house, near O'Neal’s Coal Works, in Jef
ferson township, and another in the evening at
Dr&yo’s Coal Works, in Mifflin township. Over
tho former CapL Pollock presided, with Mr.
McMeans as Vice President; over the latter J.
K. Scott presided, with James McClure and Wm.
Moore as Vice Presidents, and A. C. Critohlow
aa Secretary.. Both' these meetings were ad
dressed by Gen. Moorhead and D. L. Eaton.
A sixth meeting was held in Temperancevillo in
the evening, Which was addressed by Messrs.
Marshall and Fiction. All these were enthu
siastic gatherings, in whioh the great principles
of the. Republican party were discussed, and to
which the people responded heartily.
-- Sewixo Machism.— ln Saturday’s
Chronicle we find an article with tho above caption-,
in reference to Wheeler A WflWs-MachkmratUui
Wheeliug*-Fair. We suppose the gentleman that
was the author of that item was not aware that the
Wheeler A Wilson Machine was tho only on© bn ex
hibition at tho Wheeling Fair, and ’consequently
drew tbo prize. There was no Grover'i Baker Ma
chine on exhibition «r the result would haro been
different It Is not necessary that the Graver «£
-Baler should boshored into all tho Fairs are and
the country to effect their sale: the merits of tho ma~'
chine arc quite sufficient for that purpose, as the agent
is unable to get thorn from the factory fast enough
to ensweT tbe demand, ho having sold over four
thousand dollars worth within tho !a t ninety dajs.

Another Outrage—Oo Friday last, qs we
learn from an information before tbe Mayor, &
respectable woman named Theresa Moore, while
iu Allegheny city eearuMng for soma carpenters
to whom glto wished to.pay some moncy.ihr
Work, accosted a man* ou tho street and raked
qua if he could direct her to where the mVn
were working. He.told her he could, a&d after
conducting her some distance out the Perrys
ville road, he attempted to commit an outrage
upon her and to rob her of her money. Her
screams brought a young man to her assistance,
when the villain fled. The police have not suc
ceeded in discovering who the man is.
Bubgemiy.—The dwelling of Sirs. Gordon,
at the corner of Morion arena* end* Ridge sl.,
Allegheny city, was burglariously entered on
Thursday night, and a quantity of silverware,
jewelry, ladies apparel, &c., carried away. The
family have been for sometime absent at the cost,
leaving the house unteuanted and unguarded.
Two robberies were committed about Law

A “Mobxiso Cass.”—One of tho many eases
before the Mayor, Sunday mornlog, was that of
a woman named Mary Ann Boyle, an unsophis
ticoted looking creature, charged with going into
the houso of au ox-Alderman, on Saturday even
ing, against bis consent. She told the'Mayor
that the man was the cause of a good deal of
trouble that had happened to her, and that she
had gone there to. implore him to provide some
support for her unprotected child. These facts
being mode apparent, tho Mayor discharged her
at' once, though the ex-magistrate was anxious
that ahe should be committed to jail for as long
a Umo os possible.
Mail Robbsut.— o. S. Commissioner Beesoo,
on Sunday, committed for a bearing to day a
man named Silas J. Cover, of DavidsviUe, Som

and embezzling a letter from the mail, addressed
to Jaeob Miller, and containing money, lie was
brought here by Mr. James Stewart, Deputy
Marshal for the Eastern District, and placed la
the custody of Deputy Marshal Bernard Dough

cases, which created so much excitement here
some time ago. 4
Tab English Lutheran Churob, Rev. Mr.

It; is now, within, ouo. of the most beautiful
churches in the city. The walls ore of a color
very pleasant to the eye; the pews are in oak
and celling beautifully frescoed. A very large
congregation listened last evening to a sermon
from their pastor, from the words, “Fainting'
yet pursuing.”
Asbbstid.— Mayor 6 luck rath, on Sunday,
