Tbe intelligence in ont telegraphic columns this
morning Trill eend a thrill of gladness to the
heart of.every man who despises the tyranny
and treachery of the Buchanan Administration
The Republican viotory in Maine is complete.—
Oar friends have not only cleoted their whole
State.ticket and enrrieda large majority of tbe
Legislature, thus securing the re-election of
Hon. Wnj. Pitt Fessenden to tho United States
Benate, bnt they have elected an ooUre Republi
can delegation to the nest Congress, la the
third district, the only ono reported doubtful
yesterday, Frenoh, the Republican candidate, is
elected over Johnson, Buchanhnita. Never was a
battle fought more gallantly, never haVe we con
tended against greater odds and more unscrupu
lous and determined enemies. .
The Buohanan party have thrown all their
strength into this contest.; they have lavished
money, they have practiced all possible tricks of
deception and double dealing, they have manu
factured bogus voters and imported than, they
have had the aid of the federal gbvernment and of
the whole tribe of : Baohanan office holders—
ami they have been : routfd, overthrown, anni
hilated. The unprecedented exertions mode to
defeat the Republicaas.of Maine bnt serve to
enhance their and they deserve and
will receivo the warmestcongratulatlons.of their
.friends in all parts of the.country.
This election is important not only in its mag- ;
nificent results in Maine, but it will also operate
most advantageously in other sections of the
country. It will cheer the hearts of the'Repub
lie&ns in Illinois, it will encoarage them in Ohio
it will put new life and confidence into the cam
paign in Pennsylvania, New; Jcrseyi and indeed
In every other Stato. New England has espec
ial reason to be proud of the lead which Maine,
has given and there will be no faltering in fol
lowing the example. Connecticut will, next
Spring, repudiate the two Buohananites who are
a reproach to her In Congress. Hero in Massa
chusetts wo shall shown.record in November
next as clean os that which Maine exhibits with
pride to-day.
We do not regret that tho contest la some of
the Congressional Districts in Maine has been
very close. It will serve to teach us the danger
of overweening oonfidencoandapathy. We need
tbe hint here. In the two Boston districts' we
feel as sure that wo shall beat the forces of
hunkerism'aod the black democracy, as that we
are now rejoiced over the victory in Maine, bat
we mast remember that eternal vigilence is the
price of liberty, and. Jhat wo must work as
faithfully and earnestly as tboogh Trc feared
the enemy. Let the lesson of tho contest In onr
sister State not be lost on us.
We ooce more tender to our down east breth
ero onr heartiest congratulations. They have
met and vanquished the norny. Buottananietu
is finally crushed oat in wfcial, Leeomptooism
is condemned. The cause offrerilabor is vindi
cated. The Pin* Tree Stale: Is jrae-to.herself—

A Pcartpl Rokawat at a Fai*.— On W«<l
- night, oboat half*pa®t nine o’clock,
while the crowd ▼« raturning from the exhib
ition of fire-works from the County Fair at Con*
ncrsTille, a frightened hors# created ine of the
moat fearful panics we ever witnessed. It was
very dark—eo dark that it was impossible to
eeo any object more than a few yards away
Ti.e street was crowded With carriages, and the
sidewalks were filled with a most aompset body
of pedestrians. There mast hare been fully a
thousand people atoog the walk, and they were
jammed ao closely together Uut it was impossi
ble to more fast, or to get olear of tho crowd
without going inio Uie street c*;-climbing an
adjacent fence. In this state of affaire, a horse
attached to a ♦ 4 «ulky ” got wared, it is said by a
collision with an omnibus in the dark, and ran
away. Tryi.g, in his fright to a To id the car*
riages in the street, he dashed dnlo the crowd
upon the sidewalk, and with the sulky whirling
and leaping far up irota the ground at every
jump, for more than a hundred yards, right
through that dense mass of men and women.—
We beard the streaming when the hone fim
struek the wall in the rear of pur position in the
crowd and thought it only the usual fuss of a
holiday; but the screaming oomb nearer, and
grew more fearful each moment, till we heard
the crashing of the horse against the tree boxes,
and the rushing of the people to either band,
mixed with tho shrieks right behind us, when,
understanding the alarm, and thinking there
might beaome dangor, we sprang to a fence, and
just reached it os the horak dashedby throwing
down .several persons who had been walking
immediately In front of us.
For a moment there wan a confusion of dust,
of figures in white dresses whirling about as. if
in a tornado, of men. eouSing about on the
ground, and the whole enveloped iu a tempest
of screaming that mads any inquiry as to the
extent of the injury dona: Impossible. A little
boy ley on the welk dose by ns whom wo took
up, and found motionless and. senseless. We
thought Hlsfaeft was covered with
blood and dost Bis father, or' some one who
thought it was his cbUd* : took him away to a
doctor. Just .ahead,, a lady had been fearfully
injured. She was carried uptown. In o little
while the confusion oleared enough to allow us
to leam that £Lto persons had been severely
Injured, and one or two H was thought might
die. They were: Mias Shaw ofLaureh a daugh
ter of Mr, Freyburgerof ConnemiUe; ason of
Mr. Houston, and two othert, whose names we
did not learn. Miss Shaw, was said yesterday
morning, to be in a critical condition, but the
rest were considered out of danger.

one has yet made its appearance. Why this de

Or is it bcoauso offorgetfullness—or from a

The fact is probably that the Central Commit
tee aro (with regard to the people of Pennsyl

Caro Han of whom Mr. White told us at the Peo
ple’s meeting, tho other evening. The Carolinan
lived right in the line of Lord Cornwallis’s march
to Guilford C. H., but as he was not a Tory, he
took his hone and rode fifteen miles out of the
way. Stopping to drink at & ‘‘branch” or small
river, ho looked up and was startled nearly off
his saddle by seeing fifteen men with loaded
muskets pointed at him, on tho other side of
the stream. “My friend,” said they, “are you
Whigor Tory!" The poor Carolinian trembled,
stammered, turned pale, and, finally managed
to ssy: “Gentlemen, there are more of yob

Flight of a Swisdlino English Lawteb.—A
Lawyer of London, named David Hoghes, has
lately fled from that city to Australia, after
swindling operations in all to the amount of
nearly seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
The money was prinoipally used in unprofiUblo
building speculations. Many of his sufferers
aro fcmalra attracted by (he high rale of inter
- set he paid, and one is » oredilor to the amount
of §125,000. He resided at Canonbury Park:
had also a marine residence at Ramsgate, and
kept six carriages and twenty horses: A few
days ago bo gave a large party, to which he in
vited bis friends and clients. It was thensta
tod that the family were going out of town in a
few days, and as Mr Hughes hid - previously
issued a circnlap tj his clients, informing them
of his intended retirement from the profession
if neceessary, the party was regarded in the
light of a valedictory entertainment. A day or
two aftertihrds the house was shut up, and it
was believed that the family had repaired to the
seaside. It seems, however, that Mr. iloghes
proceeded to Liverpool, and there, under an as
sumed name, secured berths in the Red Jacket.
A detective, dispatched overland to arrest the
bankrupt, Is expected to arrive at Melbourne

The Burlington (Vt) Ttmu says that the ma
jority of Hiland Hall for Governor will not- be
less than 16,000, and adds:
“The entire vote of the Suto is probably
about 42,500, which is between two and. three
thousand more than that of last year, and ten
thousand less than it will be in 18G0 r when Ver
mont will be called on to testify in (he case of
the People vs. Lecompton! Give tho Green
Mountain Boys a fair chance at that particular
development of ‘Democracy,* and they wUI fur

“The Republican majority in the Legislature
wilt probably be store than two hundred—» (act
tbot.rather impolitely indicates the monstrous
littleness of BuehananUminthatbodj. The Sen
ate ebows a ‘clean bill of health.’ There is not
: the shadow of a smell of Lecomptonism on its
garments; and the [‘infusion’ in the. House is
merely suggestive of anew ‘potency’ in homeo
