Report of the Committee of thr PttUburgh Annuat
Conference on the action of the General Confer
ence, held in Lynehburpk f V<i., mre/trtipn to the call
of <1 Geneml one
disnenting vole.
The Committee to whom' wag'referred the
V&rdon plan, adopted by the • General Confer
ence of ;the Methodist Protestant- Church in
Lynchburg, Vo., .in 1858, and 'the'conditions
offered by that body’ tothe Conferences of said
Church, in the West and North/under which
the c&U of a Convention ialB62ifl tfaedtotnendtd:
Ash'leave to make tho following^reporl:
Ist. The titno is 100 distant .Xo leave all
our churches in the free-Ststes: firmly-bound
to remain os they now are, fur-four years long
er, wonld be to scatter them, in; fragments
among surrounding denominations,or drivo them
iuto independency, and leavo but "few to' reap
the benefits, to bo derived-;frotn the action of
the proposed Convention in 1862. Something
must be done, at on-early dole, to save our
cause in the parts alluded to, from utter and
inevitable ruin. 1
2d. Tbo action taken by the. General Confer
ence is/lictatorial and unfair. Dictatorial, be
cause it is the South alohe, settling tho terms upon
which' ; a Convention' shall be called.- Unfair,
because the Soffth''holds on to the advantages
gained by,herself, in 1888, and 1854, in first
abridging the liberty of the PresS7 to favor
slavery, nad.theu throwing put- both the Papers
and the Hook concerns, to Conventional control,
to benefiltho alave interest; and
this 18C2, the f North and West, to save
themselves from utter ruin, shall attempt to
change the constitution or discipline—no Con
vention will be Called. •
3d. By Constitutional provision, the General
Conference.jbMnowno legislative, judtcialor ex
ecutive power over slavery iu the South. But
the plau asks for the clave system more than
this—if a Convention is called, the West and
North are to pledgo themselves, so 19 amend
the constitution!, as to kite the General Confer
ence, utterly destitute of the right to express an
opinion on moril character of the slave trade,
or slavedeallng. The right of opinion on mor
al questions, cm never be surrendered.
4th. Uwe agree totheVardou plan, and to
call a Convention on said, plan, we most withal,
30 agree to ammend the constitution, as to have,
a perfectly sectarian Book concern, in which
shall he published only the church‘Hymn book,
discipline, and the minutes Of the General Con
ference. Thus excluding all Christian; litera
ture and the BookoflSod,.which in our opinion,
would beregardedas dUgtoceful inthe eyes oi
all Protestant Christian churches.^.
Gib. If we oononrin the call of a Convention
on the plan of the General Confereneerthen we
agree by an amendment to our church con
stitution, to give the of., fundamental
lair to the present uncooatitattamU position of
nnf m-tfonal chamh pgprra.. doing
this, we should, with becoming Jfrmness, rebuke
the unconstitutional acts, by 'whwx the .liberty
of the Press was abridged, to fafor slavery, by
the Book Committee in Baltimore, in 1838, and
b;
>y which the Presses of the church were made
ectional, under Conventional control in 1854.
IVdcufoee be it let., by the Pitta
burgh Annual Conference of the Methodist
Protestant Church, now assembled in Cohnells
tille. Pa., Thai we do not agree to oaU a Con*
rentfon ftt the time, norander the restrictions,
nor with all the objects had in view by the late
General Conference.
Reaolvtd, 2d. That wv hereby set our seal of
condemnation on the entire system of slavery in
the M. P. C. in the South as having been at
the' foundation of all our troubles with onr
Southern brethren—itbos trammeled our church
press—it baa thronn oat-to foreign control,
ioterestnwhich Ijelonged-coD9titutionaUy, to the
General Canferenceto earn for and manage—it
has broken the brotherhood of the. church, so
that the parties can no longer work together—
it now arrogates to itself the right to dictate
the terms on which a Convention shall be call-
ed—it proposes to degrade, the West and North
in the terms offered, by. bindlngiUcm to do its
bidding or get no Convention after all.
Ruohxd, 3d. That ire cannot sacrifice the
M. P. C. in tho West and North, to a nnion with
the Bouth, when aaid onion is-of no value to
cither party, and- degrade* ns into -slaves by
takingfrom oa the liberty-ortho Press.;
- That inasmuchasthe Conven
tion in November next will, have matters of the
highest Importance to the M. ?. C. church sub- 1 .
mittedto its consideration, wo most earnestly
invite all the Conferences in the free States, to
join os in a call of-aConrenlion. to meet in the
city of Springfield, Ohio, at the time named by
the Convention in Cincinnati, viz: on the 2d
Wednesday in November, 1858.
Buolvti sth. That wo recommend the elec
tion. of delegates in the proportion of one minis
ter and one, layman forevery thousand members -
in the district, who shall ailcndsaid Convention;
and there ionite with the. delegates similarly
chosen by the annual Conferences, in said free
Elates, in adopting such measures as wilUffecl
ually carry out the recommendations, cojjlaincd
in the memorial, adopted by thfi-Contahtidn of
Representatives from the Tfortii hod West, in

Iris said that when coal was first introduced
into EnglondrUMfc prejudice against it was so
strong, tho Commons petitioned the Crown to
prohibit the “noxious” fuel A royal procla
mation haying failed to abato. the nuisance, a
commission was issued to ascertain who burned
coal within tho oity of London, and ita neigh
borhood, and to punish them, by fine, for the
first offense, and by demolition of their fomaces
if they persisted in transgressing. A law was
finally passed making it a capital offense to barn
coal in the city, and only permitting it to be
used in the forges in the vicinity. It is stated,
that among tho records in the town of London,
a document was once found, importing that, in
the time of Edward-1., .a man had been .tried,
convicted and execated, for the crime of bant
ing coal in London! It took three centuries to
entirely efface this prejudice.
Gou> isr OatQOje.— The St. Joseph (Mo) Ga

been found in large quantities about seventy
five miles from Fort Laramie, Oregon, in the di
rection of Laramie’s Peak. A young gentleman,
William Bryan, formerly of St. Joseph, has
written a letter to his father, living in Kansas,
urging him to leave everything thero. and go to
these mines. He writes that he was. shown one
lamp of gold that weighed' four pounds, and
was assutud by those who' made the discovery
that these mines equal the richest of California
placrs.
.Tbs p»vitq of highfalutin-eloquence must he

and Heaven.”. One of his figures opens thus,
“When the sulphurio acid of .true repentance
corrodes tho contaminating zinc of innate de
pravity and ootnal sinfulness, and the fervent
force of prayerful eternity,” &o. Again he
says, “Go to the telegraph office of the atoning
cross,” and “touch the wire of penitential
prayer.”
Ox Saturday ovening Messrs. Brownlow and

has been listened to with nnabated interest
