1&b Motmowt fob A New State.—a maci
ng was held at Ontonagon on the 25th nit
composed of delegates from the Upper Peninsu
la of Michigan, and from those portions of Wis
consin and Minnesota bordering on Lake Supe
rior, for the purpose of considering the propri
ety of tfao formation of a territory ont of the
Lake Superior region of Michigan, Wisconsin
and Minnesota, preparatory to the formation of
a new State. This meeting was called some
time ago, and was attended by delegates from all
the different sections enumerated in the call.—
How, general may be this movement* or how ex
tcnsfro may be the feeling in favor of it; wheth
erm ,ia wide spread among the people, or con
nnea to a few who aro ambitions to figure in a
territorial and state government, we are unable
°wy; bnt from the persistency with which tho
matter has been pushed for a long time past,
from the tonoof all the journals of that section
and from the interest manifested in the projeot,;
there can bo little doubt that it cemmends itself
to the people of that section, nod a majority of 1
them would be in favor of it. . * 1
A committee of eight was appointed by the
convention to draft an addross to the Levisla
turesof Miohigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota,
urging upon them the propriety and tho necesi
ty or o grant to the general government of their
territory bordering on Lake Superior, for the
purpose of enabling tho inhabitants to form a
°®* territory, and this oommittce was instruct
ed to submit their proceedings to the convention
which is to meet again on the 11th inst., at On
tonagon, for the purpose of considering them.
In addition to this, a oommittce of three was
appointed to draft reeolntione expressive of the
eeose of the convention, and their report was
mado at an adjourned meeting on the 26th.
The resolutions are dovoted wholly to setting
forth the various reasons wliioh are urged in
favor of the project, and were simply acoepted
convention; but no further aot was taken.
These reasons are, the distance of those re
gions from the capitals of the different States,
to whioh they belong ; the difficulty of getting
to them; their virtual disfranchisement in many
elections; tho difference of interest and occu
pations ; and other things whioh have been
«ten enumerated and are well uaderstood.-

the comet will beef the most striking brightness,
possibly the largest of the century, and at that
