moat extraordinary lawsuit, in which Walter
; . I ag ® f? ailJor . whose name if not his writings,
: is familuar to our readers, was cast in damages
to the amount of a thousand pounds for a series
of most extraordinary liblea against a lady, Mrs.
lescombe, lately his particular and intimate
friend with whom and her husband, a clergy
man of the English Church, he had been for
many years on terms of fomilliar friendship
being m the habit of late yeara of dining at
their house as often Is three days in tho week.
The wrath of Mr. W. Savage Landor—who seems
to have on this occasion fully established his ti
tle to his middle name—appears to have origi
nated in some difference between him and his
friends m to a young lady, the daughter of a
neighbor whom the Ycscombcs hod taken into
their family and allowed t,o share in the advan
tages of education enjoyed by their children
For some reason or other, it does not appear
what they judged it best that she should leave
Bath, where all the parlies resided, and go to
Cheltenham. Tho breach thus made, the author
of tho “Imaginary Conversations" issued a
pamphlet under tb<s title of “Walter Savage
Landor and the Honorable Mrs. Yeecombe/’Tn
which ho charged his late intimate friend with
having perjured herself in lawsuit in which her
husband was interested, of having purloined
money from letters, of availing horeelf of a re
ceipted tradesman’s bill though sbo had not paid
the money, and several other similar frauds.
1 o the demand of tho lady’s solicitor to retract
these charges or stand a suit, he replied inanoth -
cr pamphlet entitled “Mr. Landor Threatened "
abusing the attorney and propping to hare him
cudgeled. A suit was accordingly brought, but
hts time, was ecll led by the interference of Mr
Landor a friend Forster, late editor of lbo Lon- ■

As there was no justification set up, the Jndire
suggested that tho case ought to be arrani/*d
without a trial, but the defendant’s counselcom
plained that his client wonld not egreo to any
settlement. The only thing attempted in the war
or palliation wasan effort, not eery successful to
drnw out from some of the witnesses that rumors of
charges similar to those of the defendant had
circulated in Bath, and that they did not wholly
originate with the defendant. Tho apology chief
ly relied upon was howorer, tho defendant’s
great age, ho being between eighty and ninety
and the fact that he belonged to a generation
not quite so scrupulous about deoency as the
present. Hud such a case been tried in New
York, tho counsel would no doubt have set up
