In fine, Thornes pronounced himself as being
tho embodiment of tho existing movement of tho
people. He was tho heart of tho present sc

-activity. Ho was the ehoioc apple-tree of the

Like the man.that undertook the responsibility

The consequence of the speeoh was, that ooe

had pointedly charged in a set of resolutions

and dangerous species of pablio bribery/’ nomi
nated his deorier for Congress, which was vocif
erously ratified by the connection. Afterwards
the ticket, which the hope of the Family had
bitterly denounced in his delivery, na being be
gotten of a corrupt parly, composed of office
seekers, hungry politicians, party hacks, and
all that sort of thing, was adopted as the ticket
of the Faibily— in the face of Thomas' assur
ance in his labor, mind yoa, that the convention
had not met to nominate-candidates like the
other conventions, but only “to look alter the
interests of the People.”
Thus mot, acted and ended the Family Con
vention—a Party the sworn enemy of Parties—
professedly fresh from the People, yet beaded,
and led, and ticketed by defeated aspirants after
nominations, the oldest hacks tho county has
and politicians of the raggedesl and most seedy
character—avowedly hostile to railroads and
free-passes, and yet acting with, and pledged to
the support of the most successful movers in tho
attempt that saddled the county with its cause
of complaint, and candidates that are ridiog the
rail to this day, as dead-head®, without “one
cent for tribute”—and, fanniest of all, making
a purely local question, the beginning, tho end,
and the all of a most immensely resolved platl
form, and yet ticketing the little giant of the
enterprise for a station where he can bring the
available enginery to bear for effect in the dc- i
sirable direction, about as pointedly and practi-
cably, as though he were missioned on an cm
