A Cm in nit Aia Tim on uiv. Pi.Aiae—Travelere aoro«s the plains assert ihat they have aceo on Noble's Pans Route, about thirty milm thi* onlo of the llumhoi.il river, Ihr most wonderful phenomenon that ihrv ibiuk could ever have been witnessed in auy part of the world. It is no lees a thing than a city in tho air—complete in every aspect and concomi tant. Itia seen in the early morning, nnd stands self-poised above the dead level of a broad and airy plaio, which i* covered with a light while dust that rises in small clouds at tho touch of a horse’s hoof, or ancends in magnificent spiral lowers in (be breath of tbe liltte whirlwinds that are ..occasioned by tho intense heat. The line of the baseof thp city, forma nn angle with line of tho plain, so that tbe city seems tn lean over towards the earth, nud a full view of Us buildings is presented. All the streets seem to tend to on* point, where they concen trate, and whence of coarse they diverge. Tbe architectural beauty and splendor of this city in tbe air are of a- character noequaled by any thing upon (he face of tbe earth. The buildings rise, one after another, in proud, palatial gran deur, and their tall towers glider like molten silver in tbe suo. Clean and perfect was tho work of tbe mysterious Architect who framed those marble-looking wonders in the air. The apparent extent of the city is about six miles in circumference, and the nearest approximation of the base to the earth is a distance of about fifty feet. Not havtog seen this phenomenon, of coarse we cannot enter into any minute de scription of it; we can only give tho geuernl idea which we hate presented. We are assur ed that the illusion u perfect—nothing wanting whatever to fill up the picture—a magnificent oily, silent as the bottom of the sea, but glitter ing in the full life of tbe sunshine, And Belf austained in tho heavens. —MarymUt {Cal.) Ex prat. Tn* Tobacco Cbof nt m Cornscticct Val ley.—The time for the harvest of the tobacco crop has already come. In the ,adjacent lowos large numbers of men are buei# engaged daily in cutting, carting and hanging it. There are some pieoea not fully grown, nnd these will be better cut later, but none enn defer this work till frost. Frost Is death on tobacco. The tobac oo crop is a great and growing interest in the Couneticut river valley. It Is unquestionably the most- remunerative crop growu, taking its average product aud price for the last twenty years. We beliove 1500 lbs. per acre is the av erage yield in this section, and 10 or 12 cents per lb. tho average price. The more perfect the leAf, the higher tbe price. . The manner in which tobacco is prepared for market, after it reaches second hands, it is an enigma to most growers. By some wonderful hocuspocus, it in creases very rapidly iu value, ao that the bauic article that to-day was sold' for 12 cents by the producer, to-morow is repacked and sold for from 25 to 50 cents. Tobacco speculators moke money even in hard times. We haves man in mem ory who in a little country village, is reported (o have thus made $5,000 last year. We believe it. There are some men (hat annually doublo and quadruple their money in tobacco. believe a book containing the Becreta of tbe craft would pay. There is no use in decrying book farming any longer. Tho great, unanswerable argument in its favor is that it fattens the purse. The musoles and bone can'do a great deal, but mind and brain can do more.— Sprinfffield Republican August 28(A. Tni Moslem Uprising at Gaza.—A letter from Alexandria gives the following details of the Mewulman outbreak At Gaza, which' has been already briefly mentioned by telegraph: “On the 12th ult., the courier from Suez, an nouncing the massacre of tbeOhristians at Jid dab, arrived at Gaza. Tho Mahometan iuhabi toots expressed their joy at the event and, hav ing assembled tn great nqmbers, went to the cadi and the mnfli, where they concerted plans for attacking the Christians. On the following morning, while the latter were assembled in their church, a body of three hundred Turks surrounded the building, broke open the doors and assailed the Christians. The latter having made a vigorous .resistance tho Mussulmans left and proceeded Uf the Frank quarter, where they broke into several of the Christiana' hoasee, and did considerable damage, uttering at the same time cries of Allah'akbar! (God is great A number of (Mussulman women followed the band, excltiog (he fanatics against the Chris tians by sanguinary songs. Fortunately the Governor, Monstapba Bey, and tbechisf of the Bashibaxooks, interfered in behalf of the Chris tians, or numerous massacres would have taken place, and Greek church and the homes of the Christians been burnt. A representation oftho been laid before, the Governor of Je rusalem, in jurisdiction tho town of Gaza lies. ■ Tat CosmEia representing the opposition In the Dauphin, Lebanon, Union and Snyder county district have unanimously nominated John W. TKEUIS > 75 —— 1 00 .... 1 75 ... a oo ... 4 oo agricultural. Bulbs vs. Dogs.— N. Y. Farmers’ Club.— The Hon.Hcnry Meigs, Secretary, read several valuable papers from London and Paris journals; oue of them was very interesting and incited a good deal of debate upon the use of birds. This woa a translation from a French paper em anating from a society for preserving nseful an imals. Larks, tho paper stales, eat up tho seeds of tares, thistles and noxious plants. Tho seed grains that these birds eat are those left upon the surface, and it does more good than barm. Lirks also destroy innumerable larva of the cedonia, that produces the wheat fly. Many other birds are enumerated as of the greatest advantage to the farmers in France.— Rats and mice are very destructive to grain, yet these vermin would be destroyed by the various nocturnal birds aud save millions of bushels of grain. The Secretary slated that New Jersey had a law to prevent the destruction of many kinds of birds, and gave a list of those protected, under a penalty of five dollars for killing one. Prof. Nash—l believe we should make friends with all birds. 1 will not except even crows. We have made war upon birds unfll we have fewer than any of the European countries. Even the robin has been attacked as a noxious bird bccauso it eats a few cherries, and yet the robin lives upon curoulio. The Nuisance of Dogs. —Wm. Lawton—Tho crow is a very timid bird, and is easily kept out of mischief by scarecrows or by feeding them with sowed corn. We have another nuisance much greater than all' the birds I allude to dogs, the mpst worthless of all onimalsand most noxious too, to our best interests. They entire ty prevent the raising of sheep in Westchester County, and give nothing in return; aud I don’t see how a Christian man can intrude a great un couth dog into a neighbor's house. I have no objection to a sbepp&rd having a dog if it is useful to him, or a pet bear or tiger; but of what use are the ordinnry curs? I estimate that it costs the State of New York three millions of dollars to mantnin the dogs, beside the life that is lost from the bites of rabid ones. - Prof. Nash—l must approve all that is said in favor of birds nod against the worthless, raia cbieviou.H dogs. I have just heard of a loss of $-U0 worth of sheep in Amherst, Mass.; bat I must say thero is one greater nuisance Lh&n dogs —it is tho men with guns, who infest the whole couutry, destroying all the birds. I doubt Whether men cau ever destroy the insects that effect destruction of crops. T. W. Field—l dont know of any use for dogs except to make sausages, and as for crows, they are in tho same category. I have had a dozen fowls destroyed of a night by dogs. They are the greatest nuisance in the country. 1 have seen the dogs "hunt in paoks upou Long Island and New Jersey. The poorest class of commu nity arc the class that own most dogs of which they hate no possible use. The discussion was further continued with great animation, and an almost unanimous opin ion that dogs are a great nuisance generally, and that the people of this country are generally mistaken in their views about birds, and that they should be protected and encouraged to dwell side by side with man Ttin Rrvon or L»*«n J’ai.mbrstos’a Rktitieiiext. —The Dubiia correspondent of thn London Timet says . \_ Lord Palmerston's reception by tho tenantry bn his Sligo estates was only such as might have been anticipated after an absenco of sovcral years from Ireland. A local authoriiy.(the Chronicle) has this roTela ti»n respecting the future of Lord Palmerrton : We arc enabled tp stale fnun an authority that is perfectly reliable, that Lent Palmerston is about to retire fretu pabli.- life. He has agreed to do so on tho urgcol entreaty of Lady I'almcrston; and a growing defer! in his Lordship's power of hearing has .also had a share in inducing him to bring bis long public career to a close. The noble Lord, when he shall biJ adieu to the excitement of Parliamenta ry life, intend;, with Lady Palmerston, to toko up lui residuum at ClitTouy, near this town and instrne lions have been given, and we fccliovo arrangements are n«»w being made, to erect a suitablo mansion thero for their reception. Wise Maktno is Tkxis.—Thomas Affleck, living near Brenhnm, Texas, writes a letter to the New Orleans Picayune, in which he thus speaks of wine making there ; We have beta engaged duriog the last month in making wiue from the Mustang grape, under the direction of a French gentleman, M. Gerard. Itm for the scant supply of labor available f'>r the purpose this Bcnsou.uud so much of other work to do, we could tmsUy have made one hundred barrels of rich wine, without going over five miles in any direction to gather grapes. As >» is we have had to content ourselves with leas than halt the quantity. Of tho process of wine making, 1 will treat ut xoinc liiiure lime. lam fully satisfied that Texas posnessea in ihisgrapo an inexhaustible source of wealth. The wine is a rich, ucid, red wine, hi rouger in alcohol than any other natural wine, it is positively asserted. R hat we have made is the pure juice of the grape, without the addition of one grain of su gar or drop of spirits of any kind.. Some small experiments, it in true, were IrietTiu that way ; but which resulted, in every instance, In injury to the wine. . Col. Benton On tut. Littlb Giant —Col. Benton, in conversing with a friend many months since, gave tho following summary view of the prospects of Mr. Douglas: “ The Little Giant,” said he, “ is in 100 great a hurry to be a great mao. He forgets that giants dou't wear pevon-league bools now-a days, and that the first office in an elective gov ernment cannot be taken by sterm. His ambi tion is much beyond his ability, for although a fluent speaker, his ideas don't bear the proper proportion to his words, and though he runs fast, be carries little weight. He thinks he can be stride this continent with one fool on the shore of the Atlantio, theoihoVon Ihc Pacific. But ho onn’t do it—ho can’t do it. His legs arc 100 short." Medical Etuic-h in New Orleans —Dr. Ma honey, & physician of New Orleans, stabbed a Sir. Anderson the othor day, for interfering with a patient of his. The “interference" consisted in providing ice and other comforts for the sick man. Anderson's wounds arc dangerous. A liquor dealer in Cincinnati recently received an order from a Homan Catholic Institution, to send 'Men gallons of tho best old Jiourbon trAii key and charge the same to the Church of the mother of Ood.' All tub Same. —“ You are very handsome," said a gentleman to a lady, “so you would say if you did not think so.” And so you would think," answered he, “though I should not say so.” Our Government is still making presents to the Indians. There is great danger, as things are now going, that It will soon have occasion to' solicit presents from them.— Lou. Jour.
