Then followed a discussion of the question of security of property from ille gal taxation, etc., etc. His arguments and efforts before the Supreme Court, and “what he pre dicted years ago/' in regard to railroads, next were touched upon, and so ho went on. When Tom ■ had concluded, Johnny B. Ken nedy, from the.committee, reported the follow ing-permanent officers: President, Robert Ar thurs; Vice Presidents, Johnßiddlc, T. S. Bart, Mich. McCullough, A. D. Burns, S. M.'Brioton, Thomas Brown and J. C. CumminsSecreta ries, J. B. Kennedy. Ed. Campbell, Jr., and Thomas Wagoner..'Report accepted. The offi cers look their seats. Mr. Chambers, from the Conference Commit tee, reported that they bad agreed on abasia of of anion, which was solely on the anti-tax ques tion, regardless of all other issues. Considera ble discussion ensued, somo" contending that they, should merge the other Convention in this, and the officers of-tbis should preside over the joint body. A. motion to adopt th‘e report was made, and after remarks from Messrs. Kennedy and-CampbcH in opposition to union, the motion was pot and declared lost.. A division was call ed for which resulted as follows: 13 for union, 43 against. During the taking of the vote, ob jections were made by Mr. Chambers to allowing those to vote whose names were not registered. This was overruled. The Contention took a recess till 2 o’clock, when Mr. J. B. Kennedy reported a number of resolutions written by Mr. Williams, in regard to,railroads, railroad taxation, free passes, etc., etc. They were quite lengthy, aud wero passed. D. Robinson offered a resolutiou laudtug the True Press, and begging support for that paper. Carried. Mr. Johnny B. Kennedy then moved the Con vention nominate the whole Democratic ticket as their choice. * He withdrew it for the time, however, at the request of Ed. Campbell, who wanted to read a letter from the Hon. Tom Williams, declining in an unequivocal way,the nomination for Con gress. Ho acticmwaa taken upon it, and Mr. Johnny B. Kennedy rehewed his motion. , Messrs. Chambers, McCandless and others were opposed to such a wholesale proceeding. Dr. MoCandless said there was an opinion abroad that the convention met merely to ratify the Democratic nominations, and hoped this would not.be the cash. After considerable discussion, a storm of confasion arose, and Johnny with drew his motion. Mr. Ghambers was opposed to the Secretaries manufacturing delegates, and moved the ap pointment of a committee on credentials. . Dr. McCandless spoke in the same way, but the chair ruled such a motion out of order. The nomination of a ticket was then, on mo ilbn, proceeded with.
