Wasuuictos, Aug. 21.—Jti* very noticeable
lhat Mr. Donglaa, iu his published speech,
declares that all differences between himself and
the Administration in respect toLccomplon and
Kansas hare ceased. Since the rejection of Lc
compton by tho people, be accepts the platform
of the English bill, nad will co opperate with the
President in keeping Kansas as*a Free State out
of the Union mjtilskeshallbaTolOO.OOO inhabi
taotfu That is now the position of the Admin

was first suggestedand proposed by Mr. Douglas.
It Is his own. He is now, therefore, In princi

The Union howover, lustily appeals to him to
cease distracting the party, and to withdraw
from the canvass. What the cud of this mat

will be induced by the representations of the
Southern allies of Mr. Douglas to withdraw his
opposition to the Senator’s re-election, and to
wards the end of the canvass the rent in the
Democratic organixaiion will be closed, lo Illi

the Republican, opposed to Slavery in tho Ter

A Few >lorsLeft.— Can anyone ia this day,
when everything is known, inform us how many
servants General Washington had and why it
was that such a number of them attained such
extraordinary longevity? We do not speak of
Joice Hcth, but of cases authenticated by coun

there, all of whom had been io tho service of
General Washington.
They all of them live to bo more than a hun
dred years old, showing lhat tbero must have
been something singularly conducive to longevi

ly body servants, There was the hundred year
old darkey who use to live somewhere near
Philadelphia, and the venerable one of Mount

paragraph from the Selma Sentinel, which affirms
that Jerry, the fioe old colored gentleman is
not only alive but can beatwlmost any body ex

Ths Great Fnison FoßTincATioH.—Tho
Cherbourg works, the completion of which the

its basis Is 310 feet in breadth, whilo R rises to
the height of 22 feet above low-water mark,
with a top-width of 103 feet. The groat basin
will have capacity for containing twenty ships
of the line. There are two other basins, with
room each for ten ships of the line. Vast Maga

Recently, however, complaints - have been made
against some of them, and oj they were not
strictly legal, the mayor of that city on Sunday
caused the arrest of nearly one hundred colored
children found in attendance at a school in the
Leigh SL Baptist African Church. They were,
however, soon released, but the Whig says tho

PaoßAoiLiTv or Another Mormon Exodus.—
The Utah correspondent of the New York Times
writes:
There is arutnor abroad that it is probable an
other exodus of tho Latter-Pay- Saints may yet
take place. An agent has been here from Col.
Kinnoy, proffering tho sale of land in Nicaragua
to Brigham Young, for the future location of the
Mormon peoplo. It is carefully circulated, like
wise that Brigham has declined the purchase.
But careful observers will generally conclude,
here, whon a project is very earnestly denied,
that there is some truth in 1L
Tnr Grasshoppers. —The “oldestinhabitant’ *
docs nolromemberto have seen such an immense
army of grasshoppers as now infest various
parts of the country. They fairly swarm, de
stroying tho gross and pasture in some places to
such an extent that farmers have been obliged
to take their cattle from the fields and feed them
on hay, because their posture was. entlroly
destroyed. . Formers and othors can now 1
eee the benefit which the thousands of birds
which havo boon killed by sportsmen (?) for the
“fun of the thing” would bo in releivlng them
of their trouble, and they should enforce the
gome laws, strictly and rigidly.— Harrisburg
Ttlegragh.
Bishop Baker, of tho Methodist Episcopal
church, was taken sick at Corning, in this state
while attending tho cession of the Enel Genesee
Conference. His indisposition was of that
character that prevented him from attending
to the duties of his office. A‘telegraphic dis
patch was sent to this city for Bishop Janes,
who hastened forthwith to the Conference, and'
performed tho duties of presiding officer until
tho close of the Conference, which took place’on
Wednesday evening.— R. Y. Com, Ado.
Toe industrial statistics of the census of 1850
are aboutto be arranged and published. What
a comment upon the manner in which the gov*
eminent does things ! It is nearly time for a
new census, and - we have not yet received tho'
results, imperfect as they were, of the last.—
Tho progress that the country has made within
ten years wouid : render these returns of little
value except for record, even if they had been
properly taken. In almost every department of
industry later and mote reliable statistics have
been collected.— Prop, Jour.
A Magnanimous Proposition.— The Wash
ington Union, with a magnanimity equal to its
ingenuity, suggests a mode of settling tho di
vision which, with remarkable candor, it admits
exists in the Democratic parts of Illinois. The
organ of tho administration sees one way in
which both sections of tho party can unite. It
is, eimply, that Mr. Douglas shall take himself
out of the way and leave the field to the admin
istration f
Avrican Cotton.— The supply of cotton from
Central Africa is Increasing, as is the demand
for manufactures of cotton, and the English
mannfacturers have turned their attention to
ttpt quarter. Mr. Clegg, of Manchester has
entered into correspondence, with over twenty
native chiefs, from .many of whom be has re
ceived consignments, and with whom he has
large transaction^.
Singular Death.— The Gilmer Democrat re
lates a sudden and curious death. On the 241 h
uIL, Mrs. Thomoe Davis, at Pleasant Hill Church
Texas, was seized with a violent pain in one of
her teeth—ln the afternoon of the etude day the
pain left her tooth and entered into her brain.
Bhe passed a restless night, and died the next
day.
ordinance for ascertaining tho population
of St. Louis has passed, and census-takers have
been appointed by the Major. Some light is
likely to be thrown on the secret history of the
late election, iu the course of a few weeks, as
well as on the growth and prosperity of the
cily. 7
Green of Mo., has written a letter
lo d gentleman in Illinois, in which he says he
wohld prefer the clectionof Douglas lo that of a
Black Republican, if he will serve in the Demo
cratic ranks, but if “ho makes war upon the
democracy, then ihc democracy must make war
on him.”
Tub Wool Tuaub.— The wool growers of
Btuben county. New York, arc to hold a meeting
at Bath on the 2-ltb, to tako measures for the
protection of their interests in Congress, and
they recommend that a State convention bo held
with the samo object in view.
