MARKABLE PRESERVATION QT A CoRPSB. A'COT
respondent of the Now York Evangelist now in
London, gives the following curious narrative
of his visit to the vaults of the Church of St.
Sepulchre, in that citj:
“A strange sight was recently discloecd to
inoin St. Sepulchre, one of the oldest, if not the
very oldest church edifico in this city. It stands
opposite Old Bailey, the hoary old prison, and
not far from St. Paul's cathedral. This church
was partially destroyed by the great firo in
London, but early i;c-bmlt. It is an immense
edifice, with a very wealthy parish, yet only
two or three hundred persons are ever inattend
ance at their place’ of Beneath the
church aro a series of great burial vaults, where'
interments havo been made for many hundred
years. The sexton told mo it was estimated
ibero were 1500 coffins now entire under the
building, and from an examination, I havo no
doubt of its truth.
"The atmosphere of the vaults seems to have
a remarkable effect in preserving the coffins, if
not the bodies, from decay. Descending through
an iron door from the church, the other day, we
entered a very large apartment, bo6 dimly light
ed, whero piles olmotßdy, black-looking coffins
were placed npon each other. These coffins,
with their elegant and costly trimmings, had
not been decomposed. Climbing up oyer a heap
of them, the sexton opened a largo wooden box,
and out of it took an entire female figure, in a
remarkable slato of preservation! The limbs
were unbroken, and tho body perfect excopi
the flesh shrunken, yet it was still eoft and flex
ible to the touch.
"The sexton stated that tho officers of (he
church had recently been examining the vault*,
and os burials there had ldng since ceased, they
designed to closo the'entrance. Before doing
so, they had been making a careful survey* of
the premises, and under a mass of rubbish in'
one corner, they found a stono enclosure, a sort
of sarcophagus, out of which this .female figure
was takeu. It is believed to be over three cen
turies old, aud evidently from its position and
the stone enclosure, it was a fcmalo of rank.
It was a strange sight in this subterranean
charnel-house, with blackened coffins piled up
to the high ceiling all around, to oce this entire
human figure ratoed up bodily from its resting
place, and standing erect upon a coffin before
you! The fact of its existence is probably
known to but few porsons, and beforo this reaches
you, the entrance to it will bo closed to all fur
ther inspection.

In Caadla, 300 armed Turks wished to pur

A deputation from the insurgents of the Ilerze

Agitation prevails jq several districts of Syria.
A re[igious schism has sprung up among the
Christians of the Greek Church in. consequence
of the Patriarch, in accordance with the Holy
Sec, having Insisted on their adopting the Ro
man calendar. The animosity created by this
measure is so great that members of the same
family who hitherto lived in perfect harmony
are now doclarod enemies. At Damascus tho
excitement had become so great that had it not
been for the French Consul the opponents of the
innovation would have murdered tho Patriarch.
A rising of the Mussulman population of Alex

Fox at Ciscissati. — -Terrible Distraction of
Cattle.—Shocking Scenes.—The dairy stables of
Wm. Hogan, at Cincinnati, were destroyed by
fire on Tuesday night, with GO cows, 6 calves, 3
horses, 1 mule, 10 or 15 tons of oat sheaves,
400 bushels of corn and 300 bushels of oats, in
volving a loss of $7,000, and no insurance. The
Commercials ays;
"Mr. Hogan describes the 6cene in the sta
bles in the midst of tho conflagration as most
piteously and indescribably harrowing. The
lire stock were all tied in their stalls. Tho
horses and mules were haltered in tho nsnal
manner, and the cows weko bound around their
horns. When the flames first commenced their
ravages the poor animals snorted and bellowed
with hideous and frantic force. As_the heat
increased and the fierce fires began to lick and
scorch their quivering flesh, their cries and
groans and furious struggles bocamo agonizing.
Borne threw themselves headlong upon the floor
or leaped upright at full length with frenzied
energy, and vented their agony in fearful
screams. The horses broko from their halters
and dashed through the consuming blaze in des
perate dismay. The tortured and suffocating
cows tore away their horns and rushed through
the blazing piles, and encountered, each other
in destructive collision, their flesh broiling and
cracking in tho heat with sickening effect upon
the senses of human beings who gazed horror
stricken upon tho wretched scone of suffering,
without power to mitigato tho agony of tho tor
tured brutes. The yells and despairing cries
of the different classes of animals commingled
iu horrid concert, and broke through the roar of
flames and crackling timbers npon the still night
air, and was borne away in terrifying echoes to
the ears of persons two miles distant from the
dreadful scene.
Two or three horses and as many cowsiplang
jed through the flames and borst in wild affright
through the side of tho consuming structure,
and fell headlong, whining with misery, upon
the ground outside, sprang again to their feet
and sped with frenzied fury across tho fields
until they dropped lifeless from sheer exhaustion.
Some rolled upon the floor of tho stable, scream
ing with Immitigablo pain, until suffocated and
destroyed by the fierce heat. Their contortions,
their awful wails of distress infinitely more
piteous aud borrowing than those of human be
ings in tho dire extremity of torture, aro de
scribed by those who gazed spell-bound upon
tho terrible spcctable, as surpassing tho power
of human imagination to conceive. Happily the
agony of tho poor brutes wob not greatly pro
longed. Tho timber composing the stablos
burned like tinder, and tho hay and oats-straw,
some forty tons, blazed and perished in fiorce
heat like lacifer matches. But the flesh of tho
carcases quivered and, blazed aud broiled all
night long, and filled the atmogphfiro with a
sickening effluvia.
Thu Loodon Times in commenting npon the
suceess of the telegraph expedition says:
For tho purposes of mutual communication
and of good understanding tho Atlantic is dried
up, and we become in reality os well as in wish
one country. Nor can any ono regard with in
differenco the position in which the Atlantic tel
egraph has plaoed us hn regard to tho great
American republic. It has half undone the De
claration of 1775, and goes far to make us once
again, in spite of ourselves, one people. To the
ties of a common blood, language and religion,
to the intimate association in business and a
complete sympatbj»on so many subjects, is now
added the faculty er instautoneons communica
tion, whioh most give to all these tendencies to
unite an intesity which they never before conld
possess.
We arc most happy that it has fallen to the lot
of this country to carry out an enterprise in
which human nature 13 so deeply interested in
concert with the'only other nation on the globe
in which the flame of soiehce is fanned and kept
alive by the breath of freedom. Let those who
are assembled at Cherbourg to celebrate another
development in the art of destruction, and to
ftlt the inauguration of a fortress avowedly de
signed to threaten the independence and pros
perity of those Islands, reflect on the true nature
of the enterprise which has thus been executed,
and turn from tho contemplation ofeoiencc de
graded into the handmaid of slaughter and de
vastation to science applied to her legitimato
offico, as the conciliator, the„ benefactress and
the enlightener of the whole human race! A
military monarchy has created Cherbourg; pol
itical freedom and commercial enterprise have
made the Atlantic telegraph and thoy have noth
ing to blush for in the comparlsion.
Immediately after tho success of tho Atlantio
telograph bceame-knowu in Liverpool the union
jack was hoisted on tho town hall. At tho Ex
change newsroom also a similar demonstration
was made.
