The Last Sews tbom Isdia.— Tho gralirjlDg
iot.lUg.nc from Indio whinh we P'-bl.shtodsy
bontruts brightly with tho dubious t.legraml
sod desponding letters which haT.recently jeon
Tecelted It is true the recapture of Gwalior by
tho forces under Sir Huan Boss hos been known
to ns for Bomo dojs, but the delude now gtsen
show bow complete was the route of the enemy,
and led to the presumption that the moral effects
of tho Tietory must haro been great and widely
spread.; It is needleßS for us to recapitulate the
exploits of what was cnUod the GwsiUor Conlin
gcol. It is sufficient to soy that Ms force has
shown a power of cohesion which has been
wanting to almost every other hostile body. It
received a severe blow from Sir Cotis Campbell
at Cawnpore, and suffered further from Sir Hugh
Rose ot tho capture of Cnlpec; but it has yet
been tho ncclcua of tho army which, on the -a
of Jane, was strong enough to defeat the Ma
harajah Scikdia andsend him a fagitive into tho
British camp. Tho route of SotsntA s force
might, indeed, be considered a blowto British
power. A great ohief, perhape the greatest in
Central India, had been driven from his throne
on account of his fidelity to British rale. The
oucccossful rebels, had, it iB said, proclaimed
Nana Sarim, assigned themselves six months
pay, and plundered a part of the city of Gwalior.
To punish such outrages was a matter of im
mediate necessity. Happily this country has in
its Indian Generals men whom numbers do hot
appal and difficulties do uot discourage. Al
though the tcrriblesun of Indiawasapproachiog
tho solstice, and on every side men and-, animals
wore sinking under tho intolerable heat, the
officers in command Of the troops- in Central
India did not hesitate to press on and strike a
decisive blow. The battle in whioh Scisdia was
routed took place on tho 2d, and on the 16th Sir
A. Hose reached Gwalior, at the same lime that
Brigadier Swim approached it from another
quarter. Tho enemy had consequently but a
short time to enjoy their triumph. The strength
of the fort of Gwalior has been recently des
cribed in these columns, and our readers will
consequently be better able to appreciate the
skill and coarage whioh were necessary for its
recapture from a victorious and elated onemy.
Onlbe 17th and 18th of June it would ap
pear that our forces were sharply engaged with
the rebels, and on the 19th the latter were to
tally beaten and dispersed, and the town taken.
They then seem to have abandoned the fort in
a panic, and it'was taken possession of by Sir
Hugh Hose on the 20th. The Maharajah, onr
ally, was conducted in state to his palace, and
it cannot be doubted that such a signal ven
geance, followed by an open and visible triumph
must have its due effect throughout Central
India. It is of tho utmost importance our allies
should feel that even if they Buffer temporarily
for their friendship and allegi&noo to us, yet
the British Government is strong enough to ad
minister fitting punishment to their enemies,
and to restore them to all, and more than all,
their former authority. It has Wen said that
foundries for casting an indefinite number of
guns exist throughout these districts of India;
we will not, therefore, dwell on tho oaptare of
27 pieces of artillery; we only trust that tho
enemy may never bo allowed to get such a hold
1 of any of tho great seals of native rule as to
have at command tho means of replacing what
, they loot in their fright of the 19th of Juoo.
The passage in tho telegram which speaks of
I fugitives as nearly surrounded by our forces
•- seems to prpmiso that we shall speedily hearths
last of the bond which has given GO muoh trou
r bio to a succession of oommanders. —London

of the bail storm In that town :
“Wc mast be pardoned for relating, in ibis
